Top 20 Houston Astros Prospects for Dynasty Leagues

Trevor Hooth continues his 2025 Organizational Prospect Rankings with a look at the top 20 fantasy baseball prospects of the Houston Astros.

After finishing first in the AL West, the Houston Astros have been very busy this offseason. They have lost or may lose key free agents like long-time third baseman Alex Bregman, veteran star Justin Verlander and Trade Deadline acquisition Yusei Kikuchi. They also traded away Kyle Tucker. Still, they’ve brought in players like Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski, and Christian Walker via trade and free agency to help bolster their chances to be champions of the West once again in 2025.These Houston Astros prospect rankings are filled with hitters at the top, many of whom could be in Houston sooner than later. They also have a number of high-variance pitchers who could wind up as strikeout-heavy starters, or even impact relievers. The Astros have not been shy about trading their prospects to stay competitive, and while that means this isn’t one of the stronger systems they should have a number of contributors down the line.

Top 20 Houston Astros Prospects for Dynasty Leagues

1. 3B Cam Smith, Age: 21

The Cubs made Cam Smith the 14th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft before sending him to Houston as part of the Kyle Tucker return package. He immediately slots in as the Asros’ top prospect. After signing, he played at three different levels, the highest of them being Double-A. In total, he slashed .313/.396/.609 with seven home runs in 32 games. His strikeout rate was a hair under 18 percent, and his walk rate was a couple of ticks over 11 percent. Smith is an offensive-minded prospect who has some serious power potential. He showed in his short debut that he has good plate skills as well. Currently, he sits 57th among our Top 600 Dynasty Prospects, which is good for 10th among FYPD-eligible players.

2. OF Jacob Melton, Age: 24

Jacob Melton is knocking on Houston’s door after making it to Triple-A last season. Between both levels he played at, he hit .253 with 15 home runs and 30 steals. His best tool is his speed, as evidenced by his ability to steal bases. Outside of that, he is a good hitter with some power. For fantasy baseball lineups, he will be able to contribute in several different categories, adding some home runs and average along with his ability to steal bases. Melton is likely more valuable in average leagues than OBP leagues with a walk rate of around seven percent in the upper levels of the minors.

3. 1B/3B Zach Dezenzo, Age: 24

When a player has good speed and the ability to hit the ball out of the ballpark, they immediately become a very interesting fantasy baseball player. Zach Dezenzo falls into that category. In 2023 he hit 18 home runs and stole 22 bases, however, in 2024 he totaled seven home runs and five stolen bases while hitting .299 in the minor leagues in a little more than half the plate appearances from the year prior. He did debut with Houston, where he hit .242 with a pair of home runs and a 33.8 percent strikeout rate in a small 19-game sample. Outside of that stint, Dezenzo has been able to post double-digit walk rates. Where he plays could be tricky. The Astros brought in Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker, with an Alex Bregman reunion not out of the question at the time of writing this. That doesn’t leave much room for Dezenzo unless they move him to the outfield.

4. OF Luis Baez, Age: 21

The Astros spent $1.3 million to sign Luis Baez during the 2022 International Free Agency period. His ability to generate power at the plate has been on display ever since. Baez has hit 20 home runs in each of the last two seasons, reaching Double-A for 14 games in 2024. He even added 11 steals last season. That being said, he walked just 6.4 percent of the time last season. Baez likes to swing, and that makes his profile very dependent on him making solid contact regularly in order to produce counting stats for fantasy lineups. If he can reach double-digit steals and still hit 20+ home runs, then he will be valuable for fantasy baseball managers, but if not then he may not have average and OBP to fall back on.

5. SS Brice Matthews, Age: 22

In 2023 Houston took Brice Matthews 28th overall out of Nebraska. By the end of 2024, he was in Triple-A. After playing in four different levels, Matthews hit .265 with 15 home runs and 32 stolen bases while walking 13.4 percent of the time. However, that came with a strikeout rate north of 30 percent on the season. That swing-and-miss adds a lot of volatility to his profile, especially for fantasy baseball managers. If he is performing at his best, he will be able to contribute to homers, steals, and OBP. His volume of strikeouts could make him into a streaky, high-risk/high-reward player.

6. C Walker Janek, Age: 22

After being the Astros’ second consecutive 28th overall selection in 2024, Walker Janek was assigned to High-A where he hit just .175 with a home run while striking out 29 percent of the time through 103 plate appearances. A disappointing debut, but that also comes at the tail end of a long season with Sam Houston. That being said, Janek is a glove-first catcher. The hope is that he ends up with a fringe or average hit tool as well as fringe or average power. If he can hit enough, he has more speed than the average catcher, which could be an asset for those looking at him to be the backstop in a fantasy lineup. Janek will have to come back from the offseason hitting to be in the fantasy baseball conversation, but his defense will give him a solid floor as well as time to prove his bat can play.

7. SS Shay Whitcomb, Age: 26

In the 2020 draft, the Astros took Whitcomb in the fifth and final round out of a Division II school. He steadily worked his way up and was able to debut in 2024, hitting .220 through 41 at-bats. Though listed at a shortstop, he also played first base, second base, third base, and outfield at different points last season. Whitcomb is a power-over-hit profile, who hit 25 home runs in Triple-A last season. The Astros have a crowded infield at the moment, but Whitcomb’s defensive versatility and proximity give him value in dynasty formats. If he can make his power translate, he is a power-hitting utility type with the ability to contribute in 2025.

8. RHP Miguel Ullola, Age: 22

After signing with the Astros as part of the 2021 International Free Agency class, Miguel Ullola reached Triple-A as a 22-year-old last season. He had a flashy 31 percent strikeout rate between Double-A and Triple-A last season, but that came with high walk rates. If he can command his pitches then he will be a high-volume strikeout starter thanks to his high-90s data-backed fastball and a very good slider. Without command improvements, Ullola may wind up a bullpen arm where he can use his fastball/slider combination to succeed in a high-leverage role. For fantasy baseball teams, Ullola represents another high-risk option that could pay off in a big way. He should return to Triple-A to start 2025 in hopes of debuting later in the season.

9. OF Pedro León, Age: 26

In a small 21-plate-appearance sample, Pedro León hit two singles, stole a couple of bases, and struck out 10 times. It was not the ideal debut. Still, in his third straight year in Triple-A, León slashed .299/.372/.514 with 24 home runs and 29 stolen bases. That marks his second straight 20/20 season at the level. He will turn 27 at the end of May, but he’s already on the Astros 40-man roster. This will be a big year for him, as he should be in competition for a starting role for the 2025 season.  To do so, he will need to prove he can make consistent enough contact so his power can play. It’s a risky play, but he represents potential steals and home runs for fantasy baseball lineups.

10. OF Kevin Alvarez, Age: 17

Houston spent $2 million on Kevin Alvarez as the big name from this year’s IFA signing period. He has a big 6-foot-4 frame that still has room to add weight. The southpaw is projected to be a big power threat without sacrificing his hit tool. His skillset warrants a higher ranking, but the risk associated with international signings is worth noting. When he debuts he’s liable to make a jump up this list very quickly.

11. RHP Anderson Brito, Age: 20

Despite being undersized at 5-foot-10, Anderson Brito is able to flirt with triple digits with his fastball. He debuted professionally in 2024 after signing during the IFA period in 2023 and made it up to Single-A Fayetteville after starting the year in the DSL. In 27.1 Single-A innings, he posted a 2.63 ERA with 38 strikeouts and 15 walks. Brito will be 20 years old until July and his high-octane fastball and slider may head back to Single-A with a chance to wind up in High-A before the year is over. Command will be something to follow for him, but his strikeout rates make him a very interesting name to monitor in dynasty leagues.

12. RHP A.J. Blubaugh, Age: 24

A.J. Blubaugh is knocking on Houston’s door after posting a 3.83 ERA with a 9.24 K/9 in Triple-A last season. His fastball is in the low-90s, but he does have a good changeup and slider combination to help it play up with his ability to command the ball. Blubaugh has a chance to contribute in 2025 in a starter’s role, though probably not out of the gate. His floor is more appealing than his ceiling, but he has a bevy of pitches he can throw for strikes. For fantasy purposes, he may be more of a streaming option.

13. OF Nehomar Ochoa Jr., Age: 19

Even as a teenager, Nehomar Ochoa Jr. has an intimidating 6-foot-4, 230-pound frame. In 2024, he slashed .222/.317/.359 with 10 home runs and 17 stolen bases. Ochoa Jr. has speed and the potential to develop into more power, making him an intriguing player to monitor in dynasty leagues. The downside was his 29.4 percent strikeout rate. That swing and miss adds some hit tool concern, and in turn, adds risk into the equation. Still, he’s just 19-years-old. The ceiling is pretty high for Ochoa Jr. as a power/speed threat if he can hit the ball a little more consistently.

14. RHP Jackson Nezuh, Age: 22

The Astros might have found a steal in the 14th round of the 2023 draft in Jackson Nezuh. He split time between Single-A and High-A last season where he posted a 3.89 ERA with an 11.29 K/9. His best offering is a plus changeup that he pairs with two kinds of breaking pitches and a fastball that tops out in the mid-90s. His numbers were impressive, but he’ll need to repeat the success in Double-A next season. If he does, he should turn into a hot commodity in dynasty leagues. There is some reliever risk present, but he has plenty of traits to remain in the rotation, especially if he continues to miss bats at the pace he did last season.

15. RHP Ryan Forcucci, Age: 22

The fact that Ryan Forcucci lands here on this list is purely because he’s expected to miss all of 2025 after Tommy John Surgery in June of 2024. Prior to that, per Chandler Rome, Forcucci was thought of by Houston as a potential first-round pick but went in the third round. This makes him a great value pick in FYPD and stash option in dynasty leagues. He was up to 97 MPH with his fastball before the injury. It’s a long wait, but it could be worth it when he returns to action in 2026, or even late 2025 if his recovery goes well.

16. RHP Ethan Pecko, Age: 22

Over the course of the 2024 season, Ethan Pecko climbed from Single-A to Double-A where he threw 26.2 innings with a 2.36 ERA. Overall, he threw 96 innings with a 3.47 ERA while putting up an 11.72 K/9. He did split time as both a starter and reliever at each of the three levels, starting 15 of the 26 games he appeared in. Still, he can reach the mid-90s with his fastball and has several different pitches he can use to keep hitters off balance. Pecko will probably return to Double-A and hopefully see the same strikeout success he did earlier in 2024. If he does he could move quickly to Triple-A where anything can happen.

17. RHP Jose Fleury, Age: 22

In the same 2021 IFA class where the Astros signed Miguel Ullola, they also signed Jose Fleury. In 2024, Fleury had a 3.82 ERA in Double-A with a strikeout rate just over 25 percent and a nine percent walk rate. His fastball generally sits in the low-90’s but tops out in the mid-90s. His changeup is a legitimate weapon, and he also has a solid breaking ball. Fleury pitched well enough to start the year in Triple-A where he is one promotion away from Houston. He’s another player who could contribute in 2025, though he’d most likely be a streaming option in fantasy leagues.

18. LHP Colton Gordon, Age: 26

Houston protected Colton Gordon from the Rule 5 Draft this year, meaning they see him adding value, likely this year. That also means he’s on the 40-man roster and should be among the first in line to replace any starters if needed. In 2024, Gordon struck out 124 batters in 123.1 innings with a 3.94 ERA while keeping walk rates low. There are enough rotation options and depth for the Astros that they may want to see how Gordon looks in the bullpen.

19. OF Kenni Gomez, Age: 19

At just 19 years old, Kenni Gomez was able to reach High-A Asheville for about 20 games during the 2024 season. The promotion came after he slashed .265/.338/.415 with six home runs and 13 stolen bases in Single-A. In total, he wound up with a 20-steal season. Gomez will turn 20 in May while likely returning to Asheville to start the 2025 season. He’s a left-handed hitter who will provide more steals than power, but he could wind up with double-digit home runs at some point in this career.

20. RHP Alonzo Tredwell, Age: 22

Alonzo Tredwell was the 61st pick in the 2023 draft, despite having a complicated history with injuries. He threw 57 innings in Single-A in 2024, where he had a 10.58 K/9. He also walked a lot of batters on his way to a 5.37 ERA before a shoulder strain ended his season in July. Health will be a big question. He throws from a high arm slot from a 6-foot-8 frame that should create some interesting angles. His potential to rack up strikeouts is there, but he’ll need to be on the field for that to come to fruition.
