Under the Radar: The Underrated AL MVP Candidate

Coming into the 2026 fantasy baseball season, you might have thought that Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, or Spencer Torkelson would have been the Detroit Tigers’ best offensive player. A case could even have been made for Kevin McGonigle after his massive eight-year, $150 contract signed in the preseason. A player who would not have been on anyone’s lips before the season was Dillon Dingler.

But he is, without a doubt, the best player on the Tigers through almost three months of 2026. Coming into the Tigers’ game on Monday night against the Astros, Dingler not only led the Rockies in home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, and xwOBA. He was in the top seven in the league in WAR and RBI. He has 16 home runs and 50 RBI in just 270 plate appearances, despite being taken well after the first 250 hitters in spring drafts.

To say Dillon Dingler has stepped up his game in 2026 (as a 27-year-old) is an understatement. Let’s look at how Dingler has taken his game to a different level entirely this season, and used his new full-time role at catcher to help.

The Dillon Dingler Breakout

At 27 years old, and just in his third professional season, the Detroit Tigers catcher is officially breaking out. How is someone who has never had more than 469 plate appearances in a season hitting so well? Let’s dive in and look at one of baseball’s most unheralded offensive stars through seven weeks.

Dingler Has Elevated His Contact This Season

Through his first 266 plate appearances heading into his game on Tuesday night, Dingler has a wOBA of .369. Among catchers, that trails only Shea Langeliers, who just finished playing a week of games in a Little League park. Dingler plays at cavernous Comerica Park. For Dingler, it’s a massive jump from his .217 wOBA in his first season with the Tigers in 2024 and .326 last year.

Dingler’s average exit velocity, max exit velocity, barrel rate, and hard-hit rate are all slightly up compared to his numbers from last year and in the minors. Where he is outpacing his past numbers is with an elite number in the contact department. Dingler is now at 91% in zone contact rate, almost four percentage points higher than his career mark. He is swinging at the exact same percentage of pitches in the zone this year as last year (64.3% to 64.2%), but he has learned to better square up balls in the zone.

It’s paid huge dividends in the power and hard-hit department.

Fly Ball Tendencies Are Also Helping Dingler

One other massive change is how Dingler has severely limited his ground balls and is putting the ball in the air much more often. So far, 45.6% of his batted balls have been fly balls, compared to just 35.9% in 2025. Why is this important? Because fly balls, and fly balls that are pulled in the air, are the best type of batted ball for home runs. Dingler understands this, and that fly balls can mean power, so he is excelling in that department.

In 2026, Dingler is hitting ground balls just 34% of the time. That number has dropped down below his career average as Dingler has lofted his swing and put more power behind it. The result has been a home run to fly ball rate over 19%, which could regress down some, but would still be the highest number of his career (he averages 13% over the previous two seasons).

At 27 years old, these are great signs for a hitter who has entered his prime and recognizes the opportunity he has to create power in the middle of a lineup with strong on-base producers. Strong batted ball metrics and putting the ball in the air have gone a long way so far this season.

Dingler is Also Showing Growth In His Plate Discipline

Dingler came into Major League Baseball with a 34.5% strikeout rate in 2024. In 2026, that number is 20%, showing a massive improvement in just two years. He simply is swinging less at bad pitches and producing better contact quality when at the plate; he’s also making better decisions as he evaluates each pitch.

His swing rate is up, his contact rate is up, his zone contact rate is up, and he has lowered his called plus swinging strike rate more than three percentage points from 2025. This is the true definition of plate discipline growth, and it’s getting to a point where the Tigers are playing him at DH when he doesn’t catch so he can be in the lineup literally every day.

Keep in mind, Dingler sat out seven of the Tigers’ first 21 games. What has he done recently? Dingler has sat out exactly one time over the last month. Dingler is getting it done with both quality and quantity.

Dillon Dingler Is Having a Legitimate Breakout

Add up all of this under-the-hood production, and it has led to a very strong stat line to start the season – some might even call it MVP-worthy when you consider the defense. Only two AL players have a higher WAR this season.

Overall, Dingler is hitting .254/.330/.525 with 16 home runs, 50 RBI, and 36 runs in just 33 games. There are only three American League hitters who have at least 50 RBI and at least 3.0 WAR. Their names are Yordan Alvarez, Nick Kurtz, and Dillon Dingler.

Dingler is better than the 90th percentile in expected slugging percentage, expected batting average, and expected wOBA. He is also elite in barrel rate and hard-hit rate This breakout, without a lot of luck attached, is for real. Dingler only has a .265 BABIP, about 25 points below the league average.

Put everything together, and it’s easy to see how Dingler has put together such a strong season so far. Dingler is universally rostered in Fantrax baseball leagues, so everyone has caught on to his strong start. But do they realize how good it has been, or are they willing to part with him in a trade? The first slump (if it ever comes) might be a great buying opportunity.

The Tigers aren’t going anywhere in a tough AL Central division with several good teams. But this season is more about developing their young players and seeing what kind of core they can put together. Dingler might be one of the young players in the group, but he is leading by example. If he continues to do this all year long, at least a few MVP votes are going to find him at the end of the year.
