While the player pool does shrink by roughly 50% when we get into American League only leagues, we also can’t speak in absolutes. It’s never going to be an even split, and there are a lot of factors to consider when reviewing the player pool and configuring our 2026 AL-Only Outfield Rankings.
Ultimately, the analysis transfers to standard fantasy baseball leagues as well. The thought process with the player pool remains the same. The big difference is that you need to have more conviction here in securing your targets. Now, let’s take a look at some of my American League outfield rankings, along with players that warrant a closer look.
American League Only Outfield Notes
Jac Caglianone, Kansas City Royals
Everyone knows it, but I feel as if it needs to be said to ensure that everyone remembers it. There are clear separations in a lot of instances between being aware of something and then acting accordingly with that knowledge.
I don’t care that Jac Caglianone was selected sixth overall in the 2024 draft. It doesn’t matter that he had a prolific college career and that he tore up the minor leagues before being promoted last season. That has nothing to do with hitting at the major league level. In case anyone forgot, big league pitching isn’t easy to hit. After a promotion from the minor leagues, there are bound to be some major adjustments.
Caglianone began his 2025 season in Double-A before heading to Triple-A, and seemingly, there was nothing more he needed to do at the minor league level. In 66 games, Caglianone hit .337 with 20 home runs and 72 RBI. He also had a .280 ISO and struck out just 18.8% of the time to go along with a 10.2% walk rate.
What everyone remembers, though, is Caglianone hitting .157 in 62 games with the Royals. He only hit seven home runs, with 18 RBI, and his ISO dropped to .138. However, a .172 wasn’t exactly helpful, and a .237 xBA made things look at least a little better.
Instead, I’d like to focus on Caglianone’s 12% barrel rate and the gap between his .295 SLG and .431 xSLG.
Kerry Carpenter, Detroit Tigers
Let Kerry Carpenter loose. There’s clear upside here, but it seems as if the Detroit Tigers have almost locked into the fact that he’s a platoon player.
Against right-handed pitching, it seems like Carpenter is locked into batting third this season. How much he plays against southpaws is seemingly up for debate. The good news is that it seems as if there’s more of an appetite for that to be the case in 2026.
Last year, Carpenter had a .217 average against left-handers, but it came in just 60 at-bats. He had three home runs and five RBI, but the sample size was admittedly small.
Overall, Carpenter hit .252 in 464 plate appearances last season. He finished with 26 home runs and 62 RBI. Between his .245 ISO, 12.3% barrel rate, and 46.2% hard hit rate, it’s clear that Carpenter can do damage to the ball. If you manage your roster efficiently, he’s an outfielder worth targeting later in the drafts. Carpenter picking up more at-bats will also help.
Evan Carter, Texas Rangers
This comes from the, Don’t forget about me section. Evan Carter’s problem, or one of them, stemmed from the fact that he did too much too soon towards the end of 2023. Expectations were raised, and rightfully so. Injuries became an issue as well. Let’s also remember, though, that Carter is still going to be 23 years old for the majority of the season.
If we focus on last season, there are pieces that generated optimism. This is also based on the draft day cost for Carter. In 63 games, Carter hit .247 with five home runs, 25 RBI, and 14 stolen bases. His ISO decreased from .174 to .144, which is concerning. However, Carter also brought his strikeout rate down form 26.5% to 18.6%.
With a max exit velocity of 111.1 miles per hour, Carter can still do some damage to the ball despite his 5.9% barrel rate. He did have an ideal attack angle 46.5% of the time last season, but we should recalibrate expectations. There is still value to be found with Carter. Even if it’s late-round speed, he shouldn’t be forgotten.
