MLB Injury Update
Mark Melancon – RP Arizona Diamondbacks, Zach Davies – RP Arizona Diamondbacks
• RHP Mark Melancon (strained right shoulder) and RHP Cole Sulser (strained right shoulder) have both been transferred to the 60-day IL
— Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) April 9, 2023
The move of Melancon helped the team add another player to the team by freeing up a roster spot. As for Davies, his injury will pave the way for Drey Jameson, who will take over in the rotation after a solid start to the season in the bullpen. He is worth an add wherever possible to see if he can continue his run.
Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
Fried hasn't started throwing off a mound again. Probably about two weeks from returning https://t.co/9Rh1cuXewU
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) April 10, 2023
Fried’s move into mound work will show a huge development in his progression back. Until then, he remains in some sort of purgatory mode where he’s waiting for his hamstring to heal. The longer he remains out, the longer the rehab assignment. Fried has been hurt since Opening Day.
Kyle Bradish – SP Baltimore Orioles
Brandon Hyde said Kyle Bradish (foot) threw a side yesterday that went well.
As for Kyle Stowers, Hyde said the org wants everyday at-bats for him. “Still really early in his career,” Hyde said, mentioning the slew of left-handers they’ll face soon playing a role
— Andy Kostka (@afkostka) April 9, 2023
Bradish continues to progress towards recovery by next week. All signs seem to point to him back as soon as he’s eligible.
John Means – SP Baltimore Orioles
John Means threw breaking balls for 1st time yesterday in bullpen session. One of the last hurdles. Now throwing all his pitches #orioles
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) April 9, 2023
Now that Means is throwing all of his pitches, he’s ready to ramp himself up toward a higher total. Still, the ETA remains mid-July if all goes well.
Adam Duvall – OF Boston Red Sox
Texted Chaim Bloom for an update on Duvall's X-rays. "We'll have one tomorrow," he texted back. https://t.co/NkHgVtWYs3
— Christopher Smith (@SmittyOnMLB) April 9, 2023
Duvall was unable to make a catch in the outfield and immediately grabbed on his wrist. This is the same wrist that gave him problems last year. With x-rays planned today, there will be updates. Bobby Dalbec has already traveled to Tampa Bay in case he’s needed.
Daniel Bard – RP Colorado Rockies
The noted decrease in velocity is important here, as it shows he may not quite be where he was last year. Additionally, we don’t know how those pitches actually looked. He has yet to face live batters, so his absence will likely be a lengthy one.
Michael Brantley – OF Houston Astros
On the team's pregame radio show, Astros general manager Dana Brown told @raford3 that "hopefully we'll get Brantley back the first week of May, around that area."
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) April 9, 2023
The timeline for Brantley’s return was hopeful for Opening Day, to hopeful mid-April and now we’re looking at the beginning of May. The concerning part here too is that he hasn’t had any setbacks. Perhaps it’s his older age limiting his return and recovery speed. He still will need a rehab assignment before coming back.
Jared Walsh – 1B Los Angeles Angels
Regarding Jared Walsh (headaches/insomnia): Phil Nevin said Walsh believes he's making progress. He's getting clarity on his issue.
That said, the longer he is out, Nevin said, the longer the ramp-up he'll need.
There's no clear timeline for a return.
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) April 9, 2023
Progress is good, as he’s been taking swings with the team’s Triple-A affiliate. That said, as noted, he will need a lengthy ramp-up to be ready. Consider sometime in May to be a best-case scenario.
Avisail Garcia – OF Miami Marlins
Press box announcement: Left hamstring soreness for Avisail Garcia.#Marlins
— Jordan McPherson (@J_McPherson1126) April 9, 2023
Consider him DTD until we get more clarity on the situation.
Joey Gallo – 1B/OF Minnesota Twins
Joey Gallo said he's optimistic that his sore right side won't require going on the injured list.
He's out of the #MNTwins lineup today and considered day-to-day overall.
— Aaron Gleeman (@AaronGleeman) April 9, 2023
Gallo’s confidence is backed by the same optimism from the team. There was nothing in the MRI that showed significant damage. He’s DTD for now, but for how long remains the question.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets
Starling Marte was removed from today’s game with a neck strain. He is considered day to day.
— New York Mets (@Mets) April 9, 2023
Marte suffered this after a collision with Jean Segura while trying to steal third base. More updates should be provided before lineups lock later today.
Seth Brown – 1B/OF Oakland Athletics
Hearing Kevin Smith is en route to join the A's in Baltimore.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) April 9, 2023
Look for Kevin Smith and Ryan Noda to play in his absence. It’s unclear who will get more playing time.
Oneil Cruz – SS Pittsburgh Pirates
Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Oneil Cruz has a fractured left ankle, a result of the home plate collision that forced the 6-foot-7 shortstop to leave the game in the sixth inning.
— Kevin Gorman (@KevinGormanPGH) April 9, 2023
Awful news for the team and for fantasy owners. This injury will likely cause the superstar to miss most of the regular season while recovering. In fact, if the team struggles and is out of contention, they could keep him out for longer if they’re worried about re-injury. There will surely be more updates later today, but for now, consider him out for months. Rodolfo Castro seems the likeliest of players to take over at shortstop.
J.T. Brubaker – SP Pittsburgh Pirates
Pirates GM Ben Cherington said there will be more clarity this week on the health status of RHP JT Brubaker, who is on the 60-day IL with right elbow/forearm discomfort.
— Kevin Gorman (@KevinGormanPGH) April 9, 2023
The team has been fearing Tommy John Surgery, but that appears to be off the table for now. Stay tuned.
Andres Munoz – RP Seattle Mariners
Roster moves: Andres Munoz to IL, Matt Festa optioned to Tacoma.
Justin Topa and JB Bukauskas recalled from Tacoma
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) April 9, 2023
Munoz hasn’t been bouncing back from his appearances and will need what’s being called a “short break” to help. It’s unclear if these fifteen days will be enough of a breather to get Munoz to where he needs to be. He did have a short spring, so there’s that too.
Paul DeJong – SS St. Louis Cardinals
Paul DeJong will shift his rehab assignment to Class AAA Memphis, joining the Redbirds on Monday for the next week. #stlcards #MLB #Cardinals
— Derrick Goold (@dgoold) April 9, 2023
DeJong will continue to get better, now against the team’s Triple-A affiliate. This is more about him getting time to play in the field and get his body back into game shape.
Adam Wainwright – SP St. Louis Cardinals, Lars Nootbar – OF St. Louis Cardinals
Lars Nootbaar is still set to swing for the first time tomorrow in Colorado. Sounds like his being activated for that series is not very likely based on wanting to see how he responds to that sort of activity, plus he hasn’t caught with it yet.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) April 9, 2023
The team continues to take things slowly with Wainwright, but his journey back to the team may be at its end soon. As for Nootbar, it’s disappointing that he may not play in Colorado, but the long-term goal is his health.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Tampa Bay Rays
Tyler Glasnow was throwing again today. Said he's been long tossing for a while, out past 120 feet. He expects to throw a bullpen next week. #RaysUp
— Kristie Ackert (@ByKristieAckert) April 9, 2023
While it’s encouraging that Glasnow is throwing, he has to evolve onto the mound and throw those bullpens. It would be then that we can start considering a return date.
Taylor Walls – SS Tampa Bay Rays
Taylor Walls’ non-throwing elbow has been bothering him since Friday night. Jonathan Aranda is here on the “taxi squad,” just in case. Cash said Walls would likely get imaging done tomorrow. #RaysUp
— Kristie Ackert (@ByKristieAckert) April 9, 2023
There will likely be updates after these tests are done. Stay tuned.
