In this series, I am going through each position to identify potential value based on Average Draft Position (ADP). The best time to find these ADP values is early in the draft season when there are still a lot of unknowns. This includes players returning from injury, prospects on the verge of a breakout, positional battles within a team, or a player looking for a bounce-back season. This week we turn our attention to second base.
When looking at your team’s construction as you prepare for your drafts, we generally don’t find value in the early rounds. We expect the players we draft high to return their value and when they are combined with multiple players who end up outperforming their draft position, it becomes a winning formula for a successful fantasy team.
It makes a ton of sense to grab one of the Top 5 guys(JRam, Jazz, Riley, Devers, Machado) in drafts as their ceilings are elite. Even if doing so, I like stacking a position of power and there are plenty of values to be had later in drafts. Let’s take a look.
2025 Third Base ADP Values
Alex Bregman – Free Agent
Last season at this time, Bregman was the fifth player off the board in fantasy baseball drafts. This year he is going closer to the 12th player off the board and I don’t really understand why. While he didn’t get on base nearly as much(.315 OBP), he was still very productive from a fantasy standpoint with 26 HR, 75 RBI, and 79 runs scored while posting a 118 wRC+. Digging a little deeper, both his hard contact rate (40.5%) and barrel rate (6.4%) were above his career averages and also above the MLB average.
The biggest issue that most fantasy baseball managers have at this point of the draft season is that Bregman doesn’t currently have a team. He and Pete Alonso are the top free agents left on the board and their landing spots most definitely affect their projected fantasy return. The Cubs and Tigers are in the mix and probably need Bregman the most but his fantasy relevance would get a boost if he resigned with the Astros or another more powerful offense.
At this point, I am willing to take the risk as he has the upside to finish as a Top 10 and even a Top 5 fantasy third baseman this season.
Alec Bohm – Philadelphia Phillies
The ADP falloff from 2024 isn’t as drastic as Bregman’s but Bohm has still fallen a few spots and is almost outside the Top 15 at the position. A lot of that comes on the heels of his terrible finish to the season. He had near-elite numbers up until the middle of August, posting a .297/.351/.483 slash line with .357 wOBA and 129 wRC+. Things then went south as he finished with a .196/.229/.272 slash line and that carried over into the playoffs where he tallied just one hit in four games against the Mets before being eliminated.
Backing up that impressive first stat line are some advanced metrics like his xBA (.288) and squared-up % (32.8), both of which rank in the 95th percentile across the league. He also posted a well above-average hard contact rate of 45.6% and a career-low K rate of just 14.2%.
I tend to rely more on larger sample sizes than recency bias as a stats-minded fantasy baseball manager and that could pay off in a big way if drafting him in the 15th round or later.
Connor Norby – Miami Marlins
Going deeper into drafts I am always looking for upside and Connor Norby provides just that. He is currently going outside the 20th round in drafts going into his first full major league season with the Marlins. He was traded mid-season from the Orioles last year and between both organizations posted an impressive .293/.382/.496 slash line with 129 wRC+ at the AAA level. The Marlins called him up shortly after the trade and while he only posted a .247/.315/.445 slash line, the power upside was there as he hit seven bombs in 162 plate appearances and backed it up with an above-average hard contact rate(39.1%) and an insane 14.8% barrel rate.
While the Marlins are in rebuild mode and not much of an offensive force, Norby is expected to hit near the top of the lineup which helps his cause to blow his ADP out of the water. At his price, you can afford to have him sit on the bench waiting for the breakout and if it doesn’t come, you can easily hit the waiver wire.
