Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Tuesday, April 1, 2025. In today’s edition, Reynaldo Lopez may miss significant time with right shoulder inflammation, Freddie Freeman had a mishap at home, and the Orioles received a mixed bag of injury updates. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
Fantasy Baseball Injury Report
Gleyber Torres – 2B Detroit Tigers
We have placed INF Gleyber Torres on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to March 29) with a left oblique strain.
INF/OF Justyn-Henry Malloy has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo.
— Tigers PR (@DetroitTigersPR) March 31, 2025
This is a disappointing start to the season for a player who was betting on himself for a big future contract. While the severity of the strain wasn’t revealed, it can be assumed that this will be longer than the 10-day minimum for a return. Obliques can be tricky to overcome as they tend to linger. With it being so close to the start of the season, he may also need a rehab assignment to get himself back up to game form should the timeline call for it. In his absence, Colt Keith figures to see an uptick in playing time at second base, as he did start there last night.
Reynaldo Lopez – SP Atlanta Braves
The #Braves today placed RHP Reynaldo López on the 15-day injured list, backdated to March 29, with right shoulder inflammation, and recalled RHP Bryce Elder to Atlanta.
— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) March 31, 2025
After losing Jurickson Profar to a suspension, the Braves got even more bad news yesterday when it was announced that Reynaldo Lopez would miss time on the Injured List due to right shoulder inflammation. This is the second time he has missed time due to this ailment, as he was shut down from this same injury last September. He returned to pitch twice in September, but then didn’t throw until the spring. One has to wonder if the Braves were not in the thick of a playoff/wild card hunt, would he have been shut down for the rest of the season? With reduced velocity this spring, chances are he was struggling to get going.
Baltimore Orioles – Team Update
Injury updates from Orioles’ Brandon Hyde:
-Colton Cowser will miss a “minimum” of 6-8 weeks with his thumb fracture
-Gunnar Henderson is on track to return when first eligible Thursday
-Jordan Westburg was a little “banged up” in spring and felt affects yesterday— Matt Weyrich (@ByMattWeyrich) March 31, 2025
There’s a lot to unpack here. First, Colton Cowser went to the Injured List yesterday after it was confirmed that his thumb was fractured on Sunday. The team was unsure of his status post-game on Sunday, but revealed the damage done prior to yesterday’s contest. The fact that the six-to-eight weeks is considered a minimum, it wouldn’t be surprising to see his status changed to the 60-day Injured List at some point. As for Gunnar Henderson, he has been excelling in his Minor League rehab assignment, and looks every bit ready in the process. With his debut set for Thursday, it would appear that he is as close to fully healed from that intercostal strain as one could be. Finally, Jordan Westbur appears to be going through some things and could be used delicately in the coming days. One report said that playing on turf took a toll on him, and others have said he is dealing with multiple issues. Stay tuned to see if things progress or blow over.
Daulton Varsho – OF Toronto Blue Jays
Daulton Varsho threw at 150 feet today and felt good per manager John Schneider. Not throwing in games yet but trending in right direction. Max he’d need to throw would be 175-200 feet. Cutoff man can run out further for a bit, too.
— Ben Nicholson-Smith (@bnicholsonsmith) March 31, 2025
The season-opening trip to the Injured List was always believed to be a short one. Varsho was hitting the ball well this spring, but he just wasn’t able to properly throw. Seeing that he has extended his distancing to 150 feet is encouraging, but he still has a way to go. It’s unclear when he will attempt to throw even further, but fantasy owners need to feel good about yesterday’s news.
Freddie Freeman – 1B Los Angeles Dodgers
Freddie Freeman slipped and injured his ankle at home this weekend per Dave Roberts. Not in #Dodgers lineup tonight. Day to day.
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) March 31, 2025
This is concerning, though the way that he injured it is atypical of baseball life, as he had a mishap in the shower. Still, a slip is a slip, and the subsequent injury is one to monitor, considering it happened to the surgically repaired ankle. His status moving forward is unknown, and we don’t know the severity of the situation. Stay tuned.
Trea Turner – SS Philadelphia Phillies
Trea Turner said his back is feeling better and he hopes to play Wednesday. Just took some ground balls on the field.
— Todd Zolecki (@ToddZolecki) March 31, 2025
The team is off today and resumes play tomorrow. He was used as a pinch-runner last night, so it would appear that he is all but ready to return. Fantasy owners should double check the gameday lineups to ensure that he is back.
Miami Marlins – Team Update
#Marlins injury update:
Edward Cabrera will begin a rehab assignment tomorrow in Jacksonville
Declan Cronin has started throwing
Andrew Nardi started throwing program today
Connor Norby progressing in baseball activities
Eury Perez will throw against live hitters tomorrow…
— Kevin Barral (@kevin_barral) March 31, 2025
Massive update here on all things Marlins. Of note, Edward Cabrera will likely need one or two rehab assignment games before a return, since his injury was a blister. As for Connor Norby, while he is progressing, there are no reports of what he is doing and what he’s already done, so this is a vague report. Still, he likely won’t return before the month of May at some point. Eury Perez is less than a year away from his Tommy John surgery, and the team would be wise to take things slowly with him. Jesus Sanchez continues to develop, but it’s unclear when he will return. Finally, Ryan Weathers’ progress is good news, but his timetable remains unclear as well because a return too early could set him back even more. All in all, a lot of uncertainty in Miami these days.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand – 1B Cincinnati Reds
Terry Francona said CES is OK. X Rays were negative.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) April 1, 2025
Encarnacion-Strand was hit on the hand by a pitch and exited the game. While it’s good news that the X-rays were negative, he still needs to overcome his pain tolerance in order to return. Consider him DTD and look for updates throughout the day today.
Michael Soroka – SP Washington Nationals
Michael Soroka came out of the game with a biceps cramp. Nats were worried it was something worse, but initial sense is that it’s not serious.
— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) April 1, 2025
It was a much more serious injury last night as Soroka looked to be in significant pain when he threw his final pitch last night. For someone needing to stay healthy to finally prove that he has what it takes, this is great news. Consider him DTD as his next start’s status is up in the air.
