MLB Injury Report
Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros
Yordan Alvarez hit soft toss today at “60-65 percent” effort, he said through an interpreter. Alvarez plans to hit again tomorrow. Of his setback in Florida, Alvarez said he woke up on the day he was supposed to face pitching and his hand was so swollen he could not grip a bat.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 21, 2025
The plot thickened yesterday when Alvarez mentioned that this was something that may or may not linger with him for the rest of the season, and that the pain/injury is in a part of the hand where surgery would be difficult to have done. While it’s great that he will hit again today, there are so many layers to this injury that it’s difficult to trust the Astros to handle this the right way. They have made many mistakes in the past, and with no proof that they have corrected their ways, it feels like they will continue to make these same mistakes. As for Alvarez, he said that he needs rest for his hand to hopefully get it right. There is no timetable for a return here whatsoever.
Jeremy Pena – SS Houston Astros
Jeremy Peña could start facing live pitching “in the next few days,” Joe Espada said. Peña has taken on-field batting practice as part of his ramp-up in Florida.
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) July 21, 2025
It seems like Pena has turned a corner here, as he’s able to ramp up his baseball activities to the point where he will face live pitching soon enough. The team mustn’t rush him, as he could experience another setback. Facing live pitching would be tremendous progress, and could signal a return soon.
Tanner Scott – RP Los Angeles Dodgers
Tanner Scott will “most likely” go on the IL, Dave Roberts said. https://t.co/JDeqzpMHB8
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) July 22, 2025
We should know more about Scott’s ailing forearm today, but the timing of this, alongside the trade deadline, liekly pushes the team to pull the trigger on a trade for another bullpen arm (or two), as per the rumors.
Grayson Rodriguez – SP Baltimore Orioles
Rodriguez underwent imaging on his elbow. #Orioles
— Rich DubroffMLB (@RichDubroffMLB) July 21, 2025
This was following the elbow discomfort he suffered from last week, resulting in him getting shut down indefinitely. We should know more about his status moving forward soon enough.
Brandon Lowe – 2B Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays All-Star Brandon Lowe hopes the plantar fasciitis flare up in his left foot won’t lead to a IL stint. He had a MRI and has constantly been in the training room to slow the pain. He’s calling it a day-to-day issue, and said he woke up feeling way better today.
— Ryan Bass (@Ry_Bass) July 21, 2025
There’s that word, “hope” again, which, as a reminder, is what the player/team wishes would happen. It doesn’t necessarily mean that is what will happen. There’s a big difference in the meanings. As for Lowe, as mentioned yesterday, this sort of injury can linger and hamper a player’s output. Stay tuned.
Shane McClanahan – SP Tampa Bay Rays
Kevin Cash on #Rays Shane McClanahan, who threw 10 pitches in a bullpen session today: “Felt okay. Nothing great. We'll see how it comes in tomorrow. We'll just see."
— Ryan Bass (@Ry_Bass) July 21, 2025
A depressing update here, as McClanahan didn’t feel great after his last outing. He now has two outings where he failed to go past two full innings pitched, which is not good news for his return being on time. He will need to build himself up to a starter’s workload all within the 30-day rehab window. He may be pulled from this current rehab assignment.
Ha-Seong Kim – SS Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays SS Ha-Seong Kim said he felt his lower back tighten up on the slide into second base in the second inning. He’ll be evaluated tomorrow morning to see how it feels, but Kim is frustrated to be sidelined again.
“Throughout my career, I've never been hurt this many times, so…
— Ryan Bass (@Ry_Bass) July 22, 2025
Kim’s season has had trouble getting on track. He already missed months due to offseason shoulder surgery, and since his debut with the Rays, he has missed time with a calf issue, a foot ailment, and now this back tightness. Hopefully, he can overcome this soon and get his season on track.
Alec Burleson – OF St. Louis Cardinals
It's a *top of the foot* contusion for Burleson, who underwent X-rays at Coors Field. Imaging came back clean. He's been diagnosed with a contusion, is day-to-day, but is in a considerable amount of pain. https://t.co/1cPM1FTzPo
— Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) July 22, 2025
Given the amount of pain that he is in, it’s fair to believe that he will miss today’s game, and possibly more. If it’s too hard to even walk in, then perhaps ten days off will not only help him get himself right, but help the Cardinals by giving them another body to use in the field.
Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds

From the looks of things here, the long-term plan is set for Greene, who is looking to return to the Reds after missing the past six weeks. It remains to be seen if both he and the team can keep to this schedule, but it’s good to know that they have a plan in place.
Nathan Eovaldi – SP Texas Rangers
Rangers POBO Chris Young said they’re “targeting Wednesday” for Nathan Eovaldi to make his next start if all goes well the next few days.
— Shawn McFarland (@McFarland_Shawn) July 21, 2025
Fingers crossed that he can make it to the mound and stay healthy.
Anthony Santander – OF Toronto Blue Jays
Anthony Santander (shoulder) not swinging and won’t begin swinging for another couple weeks. John Schneider says he’s hopeful Santander will play again this season
— Ben Nicholson-Smith (@bnicholsonsmith) July 21, 2025
The news is very concerning, given that Santander cannot even swing a bat yet. It’s hard to gauge if and when this will happen, making it quite possible that his season could be over. The hope was that he would be similar to a trade deadline acquisition, but at this point, a potential September playoff push might be in the works instead.
Max Muncy – SS The Athletics
X-rays showed no break for Max Muncy, who left tonight’s game after getting hit by a pitch on his right hand. A’s will see how the swelling on his hand is tomorrow.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) July 22, 2025
It appears that Muncy has evaded anything overly serious, though his status today will be key moving forward. The hope is that he misses just a game or two before returning to the lineup.
Gabriel Moreno – C Arizona Diamondbacks
Torey Lovullo says Gabriel Moreno’s CT scan showed he has not completely healed. Likely needs another couple weeks before resuming full baseball activity.
— Nick Piecoro (@nickpiecoro) July 21, 2025
We are now over one month into this injury, and Moreno’s finger has not yet fully healed. It’s at the point where concern starts to set in, not only for this injury, but for his health in the future, as he has had more injuries that have all required more than the ten-day minimum. It’s something to monitor in redraft and dynasty leagues.
