The tight end position always feels like a roll of the dice. Week 1 is especially unpredictable. If you missed out on the elite tier in your draft, you’re likely piecing things together. In this article, we’ll highlight tight end sleepers and streamers rostered in 40% or fewer leagues who could give you an edge.
What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune in the 2025 season.
Week 1 Tight End Sleepers
Chig Okonkwo
(Rostered in 30% of Sleeper leagues)
Okonkwo enters his fourth NFL season with some quiet momentum. From Weeks 12–17 last year, he finished as the TE9 in PPR, despite not scoring a single touchdown during that stretch. In the 2024 fantasy playoffs, he posted 43.9 points, the fourth-best mark at the position—behind only Trey McBride, Sam LaPorta, and George Kittle.
For Week 1, the Titans face the Denver Broncos. With Calvin Ridley likely drawing shadow coverage from Patrick Surtain II, Okonkwo could see extra opportunities as a secondary option.
Hunter Henry
(Owned in 37% of Sleeper Leagues)
Hunter Henry is worth a look if you need a tight end this week. With Drake Maye at quarterback last season, Henry earned nearly a 20% target share and averaged about 50 yards per game. He now gets a great Week 1 matchup against a Raiders defense that gave up the third-most fantasy points to tight ends in 2024, making him a strong streaming candidate.
Henry led the team in receptions, yards, and targets despite scoring only two touchdowns. His chemistry with Maye is already established, and even with Stefon Diggs in town, Henry should remain a trusted option. This matchup gives him sneaky TE1 appeal to start the season.
Week 1 Tight End Streamers
Brenton Strange
(Rostered in 28% of Sleeper leagues)
Heading into Year 3, Strange is flying under the radar. Last season, he hauled in 40 catches on 53 targets while playing behind Evan Engram (now with the Broncos). Strange projects as, at best, the Jaguars’ third receiving option in 2025.
When given volume, he produced. In four games with more than four targets, he scored at least 9.5 PPR points in three. Week 1 brings a strong matchup against the Carolina Panthers, who allowed the most touchdowns to tight ends (11) in 2024 and ranked bottom five overall versus the position.
Juwan Johnson
(Rostered in 5% of Sleeper leagues)
The now 28-year-old, who entered the NFL as a wide receiver but quickly converted to tight end, received a 3-year, $30 million extension this offseason. The Saints seem confident he can take the next step. He finished 10th among tight ends in yards per target and posted 50 catches, 548 yards, and three touchdowns. He closed 2024 strong with three games of 12+ fantasy points in his final five games.
Spencer Rattler was announced as the starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. New Head Coach Kellen Moore runs one of the fastest-paced offenses in the league—his units have ranked top-9 or better in tempo every year since 2019. More plays equal more opportunities, and Johnson is the Saints’ only reliable tight end option with Taysom Hill on the PUP list (recovering from an ACL tear).
