Deep League Waiver Wire Targets for Week 25
15-Team Mixed League Targets
1. Connolly Early, SP, Red Sox (25% rostered)
There’s a saying that “those who pay attention, win”. This holds true for fantasy baseball in September. Amid all the excitement of the start of the NFL season was one of the most impressive pitcher debut performances in recent history. In fact, Connolly Early made history by tying for the most strikeouts, eleven, in five innings pitched in a debut. Early is in the rotation for the last couple weeks of the season and faces up against the unintimidating Athletics next. Minor league hitters only hit .197 against Early this season, before his call up, so it’s clear there major upside in his arm and approach to make a major fantasy impact yet this season.

2. Johan Oviedo, SP, Pirates (24% rostered)
Sometimes being slightly above average is just good enough, especially when it comes to finding pitching in mono leagues. Since his promotion back to the major leagues in early August, Oviedo has been superb at limiting base runners with only 11 hits allowed in 20 innings. Oviedo won’t put up elite strikeout numbers, but his ability to limit damage makes for an appealing addition for those looking to bolster ERA and WHIP categories down the stretch.

AL-Only League Waiver Wire Target
Tyler Wells, SP, Orioles (27% rostered)
It’s been a long road back from injury for Tyler Wells over the last year. Though, it appears he’s picking up where he left off in his 2023 breakout season. In fact, he’s looked even more impressive in his first two starts by pitching to a 0.60 WHIP. His pitching metrics indicate that he’s got everything going right as his excellent cutter pitch spin rates are fooling hitters and his changeup control is keeping them swinging. After his one-hitter against the Pirates this week, his roster rate will surely soon jump up beyond deep league availability.

NL-Only League Waiver Wire Target
Nacho Alvarez, 3B, Braves (17%)
In the final weeks of the season several factors come into consideration when making waiver decisions. One key factor to consider is playing time, as more plate appearances Logically tends to lead to more production in counting stats. That’s what stands out for Nacho Alvarez, currently filling in for the injured Austin Riley in the powerful Braves lineup. Alone there’s not a lot of appeal for Alvarez as he has just average hit tools and little speed. However, since he’s been a regular in the Braves lineup the last couple of months, he’s slowly accumulated meaningful counting stats for a mono league roster. With 14 runs scored and 9 RBI so far, it’s likely that Alvarez can continue to compile some key counting stats for managers desperate for a third base or corner infield replacement.

The Pirates are in the National League, so Oviedo isn’t available in AL-Only formats.
Yikes, I somehow switched him with Tyler Wells in the wrong league spot. Thanks!
