Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Willing and Abel

We have fewer teams to target in streaming matchups this week as offenses continue to take shape. Interestingly the Mets have become a target for streaming, as they have found difficulty getting the ball out of the park. The White Sox and Athletics also continue to be clear targets. Some other issues this week make the pitching streamers last thin, including many teams having Monday off, and highly rostered pitchers landing starts against our target teams.

Below are some of my favorite pitching streamers for the upcoming week.

Pitching Streamers for Shallow Leagues (Over 20% Rostered)

Eduardo Rodriguez (SP – ARI)

Next Start: Wednesday, 4/22 vs CWS

After three solid starts, including two quality starts and a win, Eduardo Rodriguez had his first challenging outing at Baltimore. He faces a worse offense in the White Sox in his next start, which should result in a return to the win column for the veteran.

Chicago has scored the second fewest runs in baseball, while also hitting the seventh fewest home runs. They have also struck out the fifth most of any team in the league, and own MLB’s third highest strikeout rate. Rodriguez has allowed just two home runs across 23 innings this season, an improvement on past seasons. His K rate is down, compared to his career norm, but facing a team that strikes out as much as the White Sox should hep him improve that area.

E-Rod’s fastball and changeup combo has been working well for him this season. They are major weapons for him against righty hitters. His best out pitch for lefty hitters is his cutter, with a 30% putaway rate. He’ll need to continue to improve his secondary pitches to sustain success, but this matchup is too good to pass up. And if you do not believe in him, here is one of his coaches talking about him:

The matchup make Rodriguez one of the top pitching streamers for the coming week.

Michael Soroka (SP – ARI)

Next Start: Thursday, 4/23 vs CWS

The Nationals must be wondering where this Michael Soroka was last season. If this success continues, it looks to be a career year for the oft-injured veteran. He is 3-0 in three starts across 15.2 IP, though he has yet to record a quality start. That could change in his next outing against the White Sox.

As mentioned, the White Sox possess one of the worst offenses in baseball. Their major weaknesses have been areas of significant strength for Soroka. He has recorded a career best 13 strikeouts per nine innings, while also limiting home runs.

Soroka’s stuff has been electric this season, so far. His fastball, slurve, changeup, and sinker all have 20% putaway rates or higher. His fastball, slurve, and change also have whiff rates of 22%, 34%, and 41%, respectively. Soroka is getting batters from both sides of the plate out, and this looks like the real deal. Check this out:

This appears to not be a fluke. Soroka likely will hit some regression down the road, but not in this one. Make him one of your priority pitching streamers for the coming week.

Pitching Streamers for Deep Leagues (0%-24% Rostered)

Jesse Scholtens (SP – TB)

Next Start: Monday, 4/20 vs CIN

This is mostly the product of a very thin streaming week, but Jesse Scholtens has pitched well and faces a Reds team that could put him in line for another good outing as he gets stretched out as a starter.

Cincinnati has struggled to score runs, and with this game away from the hitter-friendly confines of Great American Ball Park, this could be another tough game for Reds hitters. They have the fourth fewest runs scored, while also ranking eighth works in K%. In 9.2 IP so far, Scholtens has yet to allow an earned run or a home run.

Scholtens will toss his first game as a starter this season in this outing, but his stuff should play no matter what. He owns a wicked slider that has a .133 batting average against. He also has an excellent fastball that he has thrown 40 times this season and has yet to be hit. These pitches helped him to a great game score in his last outing per PLV:

Scholtens is a bit of a gamble, but is worth a dart throw in deep leagues if you need arms. He should be o your pitching streamers radar for the coming matchup.

Mick Abel (SP – MIN)

Next Start: Tuesday, 4/21 at NYM

As the regular season began, Mick Abel tossed two clunkers, allowing nine runs across 7.1 innings to the Orioles and Rays. In the following two starts, he threw two shutouts, including earning a 10-strikeout win against Boston. He lines up against a somewhat struggling Mets offense next.

The Mets have disappointed in some respects this season, as they have the fifth-fewest runs scored in all of baseball. They also have hit the eighth fewest homers, and have the seventh highest groundball rate. For Abel’s flaws, like his high walk rate this season, he has yet to allow a homer, which bodes well against the Mets. He is also league average at inducing grounders, which could go up against New York.

Abel has managed some high whiff rates on his pitches this season – his fastball, sinker, and changeup all have whiff rates over 30%. His change is absolutely dirty, though, with a .182 BAA, a 31% whiff rate, and a 35% putaway rate. Take a look at this filthy changeup, followed by a curveball, both used to put batters away:

With another strong outing, Abel’s stock is certain to rise, so this might be one of the last opportunities to make him one of your pitching streamers.

Dean Kremer (SP – BAL)

Next Start: Friday, 4/24 vs BOS

Dean Kremer went five innings in his season debut against the Diamondbacks. He allowed two earned runs, while striking out nine and walking none. He faces Boston in his next outing.

The Red Sox have not been horrible; however, this is a nice streaming matchup considering their weaknesses and Kremer’s strengths. Boston has scored the ninth-fewest runs in the league, and has hit the second-fewest home runs. Unsurprisingly, they also have the league’s third-highest groundball rate. Kremer has been just over league average in groundball rate throughout his career, something that should play well against the Sox. He flashed some nice strikeout stuff in his season debut, which should carry over in this one, considering Boston’s propensity for K-ing.

Kremer relied heavily on his splitter in his first start this year. It was his second most used pitch during all of last season, and appears to be a pitch he will lean on this season, too. It was nearly impossible for Arizona to hit, and it is no wonder why:

This is a great matchup for Kremer, and it makes him one of the top pitching streamers for the week ahead.

Reid Detmers (SP – LAA)

Next Start: Saturday, 4/25 at KC

Reid Detmers has had two exceptional starts this season, one against the Yankees and the other against the Mariners. He also has two starts on the ugly side, against Atlanta and Houston. He faces a disappointing Royals offense in his next start.

The stars on the Royals have underwhelmed, and the result has been Kansas City putting up the third-fewest runs scored in baseball. They have hit the fifth fewest home runs, which has certainly impacted their lack of scoring. On the season, Detmers has allowed just one home run across 22.2 IP. His unseemly 65% LOB rate and a low HR rate suggest his defense may be a reason why his ERA is up to 3.57, because his stuff has been excellent.

Detmers is throwing an awesome combo of a fastball, slider, changeup, and curveball. His fastball is the only pitch out of those four with a BAA over .215 and a putaway rate under 21%. The slider-changeup combo in particular has been devastating. His curveball and sinker have also been spectacular. Take a look at the game score from his last outing:

Something seems to be clicking for Detmers this season, and this lines up to be a great matchup for him. He should be someone you consider for your pitching streamers in the week ahead.

Foster Griffin (SP – WAS)

Next Start: Sunday, 4/26 at CWS

The Nationals have mostly been exciting on offense, but Foster Griffin is a reason to get excited, too. He has a 3.05 ERA after four starts. He has wins against Philly and Milwaukee, and allowed just one earned run against the Dodgers. He went 5.1 in his last outing, giving up four earned runs to Pittsburgh, but he also struck out seven batters and walked just one. He pitches next against the White Sox.

Chicago’s biggest issues are with scoring runs, hitting homers, and striking out. Griffin has a bit of an inflated HR/9 rate. He excelled at limiting homers during his seasons in Japan, and facing a team in the White Sox struggling to score runs should help his HR/9 even out. He also could see a surge in his K/9 rate, especially considering how he was able to strike out so many batters in his last outing.

Griffin induces a ton of whiffs with his breaking and offspeed stuff. His cutter, sweeper, changeup, sinker, curveball, and splitter all have whiff rates of 21% or higher. But only his cutter, curve, and splitter have putaway rates over 20%. He has to figure out a way to get more outs with some of his more frequently used secondary stuff. If he can do that, he may be a pitcher you hold onto for longer than just one start. Here he is striking out the side earlier this month with a curveball and a couple of sweepers.

Griffin should be among the players you consider as your pitching streamers for the next matchup.
