Welcome back, golf fans. After a Jackson Koivun breakout win at the 3M Open last week, the PGA Tour stays in the Midwest and heads to Detroit Golf Club for the 2026 Rocket Classic. The golf course itself has been around for a 125+ years, but the PGA Tour has only been making a stop here since 2019 when Nate Lashley won the inaugural event. We have seen big names (Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler) take down the event; Cam Davis has won twice, and last year bomber Aldrich Potgieter won in a playoff. This year we have a pretty good field with three of the top 10, 11 of the top 25, and 20 of the top 50 players in the DataGolf world rankings.
In this article, we will break down the course, look at the stats and trends that matter, then go over some of our top bets. Let’s get started.

The Course: Detroit Golf Club
The big difference players will notice this week after the renovation is that Detroit Golf Club is now a Par 70 setup after playing as a Par 72 over the first seven events here. Two of the easier and reachable par 5 holes were converted into long and challenging par 4s. The goal was to add more strategy to play rather than bomb and gouge as the penalty for missing fairways was minimal. My prediction is a winning score in the -15 to -18 range.
The par 3s are split with two shorter at 156 and 163 yards and two long ones at 205 and 246 yards. There are two par 4s under 400 yards, three in the mid range (400-450), and after the renovation, seven over 450 yards. This includes four par 4s over 494 yards! The two par 5s (592, 561) should still produce a ton of birdies and a lot of eagle chances.
Stats & Trends That Matter: Finding the 2026 Rocket Classic Champion
Top Stats:
- Driving Distance – Even after the renovation, distance is going to be a factor with five par 4s over 480 yards, three of which are over 500 yards. If the bomber in question also has trending accuracy numbers to go with distance, that is only a bonus.
- Good Drive % – The angles still remain after the renovation, meaning the penalty for missing is still minimal, which is why we have seen a GIR rate above 70% on average the first seven trips.
- Strokes Gained: Approach/Long Iron Proximity – With two long par 3s, the long par 4s, and one longer par 5, there is going to be a higher than average amount of long iron approaches, and those who navigate those the best will rise to the top!
- Birdie or Better % – Even with the change to a par 70, there are enough opportunities around the course that we should see the winner get close to 20 birdies for the week.
Chris Gotterup (+1800 Outright / +355 Top 5)
It’s a tough week at the top as I can’t quite get behind Cam Young in the single digits coming off a mentally exhausting final round at the Open Championship where he lost by a stroke. Instead, I will turn to Gotterup, who is worth shopping around on as the original number is all over the place. He played well overseas with a T18 at the Open and T11 at the Scottish Open, and those followed a John Deere Classic win on the July 4th weekend. He is 2nd in this field in SG: Ball Striking over the last 20 rounds, and outside the terrible putting at the Open, he has been better than average in the same timeframe.
Hideki Matsuyama (+3500 Outright / +590 Top 5 / +290 Top 10 / +140 Top 20)
After a hot start to the season (T13, T11, 2nd), Deki went cold on us with no top 10s in 13 straight events up until last week when he finished 3rd at the 3M Open. Before that, he tallied back-to-back T14’s and is 9th in this field in SG: Tee to Green during that stretch. He has had success here at Detroit Golf Club, making four of five cuts with three top 25s, including a T13 here last year. He is trending up, and I like betting him as a ladder play this week.
Jake Knapp (+3600 Outright)
The roller coaster swings have been even greater with Knapp in 2026. He started the season with seven finishes of 11th or better in his first eight events but followed that up with three missed cuts and two finishes outside of 50th. The good news is that he appeared to be breaking out of the slump last week at the 3M Open, where he gained an insane 10.5 strokes ball striking, finishing T13. He finished 4th here last year, and looking at his overall stats this season, he is the only player in the field to rank top 10 in both driving distance and SG: Approach in my model.
William Mouw (+335 Top 20)
Going way down the board, my favorite longshot of the week is William Mouw. He is a top 20 ball striker in this field, and while the short game has been erratic, he has still flashed upside in his second season on the PGA Tour. He missed the cut last week but has finished 26th or better in three of his last five with a top 10 at the ISCO Championship and top 20 at the RBC Canadian Open. He finished 34th here last year, and I think he can top that this time around. If you are more confident than me, a top 10 and longshot outright might be a play as well.
