MLB Injury Report

Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds

Greene felt discomfort in his right elbow on Tuesday, and a day later it was revealed that he would miss some time on the injured List due to right elbow soreness. Now, he will go for a second opinion on his ailing elbow, leaving very little for fantasy baseball managers to look forward to, as most second opinions rarely lead to positive results. He’s a pitcher who throws hard, has an extensive injury history, and plays for a team that will want to get the most out of their long-term investment while they rebuild. The fact that the chances of him returning are slim is surprising, because it feels like the writing is on the wall for his season to be done and over with.

Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds

Trey Yesavage – SP Toronto Blue Jays

It’s been two-plus days since Yesavage was lifted from his start early with knee inflammation. He has since been placed on the Injured List, and after a thorough examination, all we know is that we won’t know more until Monday. As such, even if surgery won’t be necessary, we’re almost at the point of the season where any pitching injury could be seen as season-ending. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but nothing here looks promising at all. Stay tuned.

Spencer Arrighetti – SP Toronto Blue Jays

Arrighetti was cruising along until the setback. While it’s unclear just how serious this setback is, knowing that he reinjured the same body part isn’t overly positive. Stay tuned for details.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – 1B Toronto Blue Jays

I’ll be honest here: I don’t know what to make of this situation. On the one hand, Guerrero is always in the lineup and cleared to play. That means physically, he is healthy and ready to give all that he has for the Jays. On the other hand, he’s been subpar this season, and that’s putting it kindly. He’s had back and hamstring issues this season; he has head health and weight issues that have compromised his performance in the past, and he doesn’t quite seem like himself mentally either, as the team is struggling. My guess here would be that he does not want to give up and sit out. He’s never been on the Injured List before and likely wants to keep that endurance going. Will that happen? I don’t know. The logical side here is to take some time, even just ten days, and see how he feels. Perhaps he can come back for the final five weeks of the season and give fantasy baseball managers a return on the early-round investment they made. Will he do it? That remains to be seen. All that being said, if and when we find out that he has been suffering through an injury all season long, he makes for an intriguingly buy-low player in next year’s drafts and in dynasty formats.

Connelly Early – SP Washington Nationals

The team doesn’t seem too concerned with this, but the trail that has been left here since his injury is eye-opening. Early left early from a game on June 30, and since then he has gone for a second opinion, begun a throwing program, been traded to a new team, and then advanced to live batting practice. All this after a diagnosis of left posterior elbow inflammation. It feels rushed, but with both his former and current teams contending, it’s possible that they both have wanted him back sooner than he should have been back. Of course, that last part is speculation, but everything else doesn’t sit right. Here’s hoping that there is nothing more to this other than a minor setback.

Joe Ryan – SP Minnesota Twins

Ryan was having difficulty physically delivering the ball, as something in his body was preventing him from doing so. After an MRI, it was determined that a glute strain was the culprit, and now he will miss what he hopes will be 15 days on the Injured List. All things considered, this is good news, and chances are that a short time away will be enough for him to overcome this ailment.

Joey Bart – C Chicago White Sox

And just like that, the White Sox will likely be in need of yet another catcher while they wait for Kyle Teel to return, who is barely two weeks into his minimum six-week absence. Terrible luck here for Chicago.

Jackson Jobe – SP Detroit Tigers
