MLB Injury Report
Matt Chapman – 3B San Francisco Giants
Matt Chapman had an X-ray on his elbow after being hit by a pitch. It came back negative.
— Justice delos Santos (@justdelossantos) July 23, 2025
A scary moment yesterday, when Chapman was hit in the elbow by a pitch. He was forced to leave the game, but the good news afterward was that the X-rays came back negative. As such, there is likely no fracture, and instead, he should be considered day-to-day with a bruise. He may miss a game or two, but that should be about it.
Arizona Diamondbacks – Team Update
Torey Lovullo said there is a very good chance Shelby Miller and Jalen Beeks will throw to live hitters on Friday.
— Alex Weiner (@alexjweiner) July 23, 2025
Finally, some good news for the Arizona bullpen, as it appears that two key components are making positive progress. Just a reminder, though, that Justin Martinez made some similar type of progression, came back, and then required season-ending surgery. While all of these situations are unique, it’s relevant to remember that a return doesn’t necessarily mean it’s forever.
Bobby Witt Jr. – SS Kansas City Royals
Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr. said his leg is fine and he’s just getting a day off. He could have played if needed.
— Pete Grathoff (@pgrathoff) July 23, 2025
There were some murmurs that Witt received yesterday off because of an aggravated knee issue. While this news is good in that his knee should be fine, it’s essential to remember that many players will say these sorts of things to downplay something more significant. If he returns on Friday, then this is all for naught. That said, it’s something to keep in the back of your mind when forming lineups for the weekend.
Daulton Varsho – OF Toronto Blue Jays
Daulton Varsho is headed for Triple-A Buffalo by Friday, John Schneider says, and likely needs ~3 games there.
Sounds like we could see Varsho back with the #BlueJays at some point in Baltimore.
— Keegan Matheson (@KeeganMatheson) July 23, 2025
Assuming that he has a successful weekend, it would appear that Varsho is on track to rejoin the Blue Jays early next week.
Max Muncy – 3B Los Angeles Dodgers
Max Muncy will go to Arizona tomorrow and take live at-bats for a few days, after which he could potentially begin a rehab assignment, per Dave Roberts.
— Sonja Chen (@SonjaMChen) July 23, 2025
Muncy has been recovering at a rapid pace and looks to be fully healed well before his original timetable would have suggested. All that being said, he is well beyond the age of 30, and as such, the likelihood of him suffering a setback or reinjuring himself remains high. Additionally, remember that he has an extensive injury history as well. It’s a long-winded way of saying that while he’s doing well now, it’s important to have backup plans waiting in the wings.
Roki Sasaki – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Roki Sasaki threw a 39-pitch bullpen session this morning. He'll throw again this weekend, and next week, he'll likely go to Arizona and begin facing hitters, Dave Roberts said.
— Sonja Chen (@SonjaMChen) July 23, 2025
Slow and steady wins the race, and it appears that’s their mantra for the Dodgers with Sasaki. The good news is that he no longer experiences any discomfort, and as such, he’s able to not only gradually intensify his output but also feel good on days when he’s resting.
Mookie Betts – SS Los Angeles Dodgers
Dave Roberts said there's a chance Mookie Betts will not be with the team on Friday in Boston for personal reasons: "There might be some things going on that he might not be around, that he's got to deal with personally. Everything is okay with him, but yeah, we'll see."
— Sonja Chen (@SonjaMChen) July 23, 2025
Fingers crossed that whatever is going on in the personal life of Betts is something that he will be able to overcome and persevere through.
Marcelo Mayer – SS Boston Red Sox
Marcelo Mayer was wearing a brace on his right wrist and said he will get an MRI.
“It’s in pain but hopefully it’s not too severe,” he said.
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) July 24, 2025
There is no specific incident that seemingly caused this ailment, so it could very well be something that has escalated over time. Once he has his MRI, both he and the team should have some clarity on the situation and offer a timeline. Until then, consider him day-to-day, but there is a chance here that he requires time on the Injured List.
Jorge Soler – OF Los Angeles Angels
Jorge Soler left the game with back tightness.
As I reported before the game, Soler said his back has continued to bother him but he's been playing through it.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 23, 2025
Soler has been receiving inconsistent playing, and it would appear that it’s due to this ongoing injury to his back. WHile the team didn’t provide more information other than his departure, we should find out more befoee their next game, though it’s quite possible that he needs time on the Injured List too.
David Festa – SP Minnesota Twins
David Festa is going on the IL with right shoulder inflammation. Travis Adams has been recalled. #MNTwins
— DanHayesMLB (@DanHayesMLB) July 23, 2025
This is Festa’s second stint on the Injured List for his shoulder, which means that this could be an extended absence.
Austin Riley – 3B Atlanta Braves
Snit said Riley was still dealing with a shade of discomfort today. So, they decided to wait a couple days to activate him. He’ll likely play Friday in Texas
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) July 22, 2025
Riley had been progressing toward a return faster than expected, so a setback here isn’t completely out in left field. If he does, in fact, return Friday, fans should still be happy, given that an activation earlier in the week felt forced and out of place. If we get another setback, then it might be time to worry.
