MLB Injury Report

Anthony Volpe – SS New York Yankees

This news was a bombshell of a report, indicating that Anthony Volpe has been playing through a torn labrum for the majority of the season. There are so many layers to this onion to peel. First of all, the injury in question occurred at the beginning of May, when Volpe stated that he heard a “pop” while he was injured in the field. He didn’t end up going onto the Injured List, and at the time entered that game hitting .239 on the season. Since then, he’s hit .195 at the plate, albeit with 14 home runs and 12 stolen bases. It remains to be seen what’s next here, as surgery to fix the problem could be in the offseason. However, the Yankees have a World Series title to chase, and as such, they need someone to play up the middle. This has the makings of ending disastrously for both Volpe and the Yankees, as there is an “eau de Astros” air about the way this was handled. Stay tuned.

Masyn Winn – SS St. Louis Cardinals

Winn will be playing through a meniscus tear for the rest of the season, and it’s possible that this affects his production at the plate and on the field. Fantasy players would be wise to look elsewhere for volume down the stretch, as even if he does play, what he does may hurt more than it helps.

William Contreras – C Milwaukee Brewers

This is something to monitor as we get closer to first pitch for the Brewers, as if there is any indication that this is more than a bruise, Contreras could miss the weekend’s slate of games.

Dalton Rushing – C Los Angeles Dodgers

Rushing did well to catch nine innings of work here, which was a key requirement for him given his injured shin. It’s unclear if and when he’ll get called back up, but it’s quite possible that it could happen at any time.

Los Angeles Angels – Team Update

A day after experiencing forearm discomfort, Reid Detmers heads to the Injured List with elbow inflammation. This could lead to something more serious down the road (or in the short term), but with the severity of the inflammation unknown, it’s easy to jump to conclusions. That being said, it will be important to note anything and everything you can regarding this injury, as if it goes untreated into the offseason, there’s a chance that Detmers is one of those cases that comes into camp and reinjures himself once a ramp-up begins. As for Nolan Schanuel, Tyler Anderson, and Jorge Soler, all are questionable to return and contribute at all this season, making them all replaceable in redraft leagues. Finally, it’s great news that Logan O’Hoppe is feeling better and seemingly over his bout with a concussion. Hopefully, he can finish the season off strong and lead that into next season.

Chase Dollander – SP Colorado Rockies

Dollander will go on the Injured List with an injury that will likely end his rookie season. His overall numbers are bad, but when you dig deeper, he was actually quite usable on the road. Don’t forget about him at the end of drafts next year if you have room to stash players on your bench.

Anthony Santander – OF Toronto Blue Jays

Santander’s first rehab game started with a bang, as he finished 1-for-3 with two walks. The home run had an exit velocity of 102.4 miles per hour. This is great news for him and the Blue Jays, who are aiming for a playoff spot.

Ketel Marte – 2B Arizona Diamondbacks

Another situation to monitor before the Diamondbacks begin play against the Twins. However, this one seems like everything will be okay. Fingers crossed.
