With the offseason clock officially ticking, I’m kicking off my 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up Series with a name that perfectly captures both upside and uncertainty, Tink Hence. Ranked at #150 on my list, Hence embodies the kind of arm that can redefine a fantasy roster if everything clicks. The stuff is electric, the frame is lean, and the development path has been anything but linear, exactly the type of profile worth diving into as we count down the 143 days to Opening Day.
Daily Write-Up Series #150 Tink Hence
The Cardinals haven’t hidden how highly they value Tink Hence, and you don’t have to squint to see why. Even in a small 2025 sample, the stuff is playing, the bats are missing, and the ball isn’t leaving the yard. The next step is the same one it’s always been for Hence: throw enough strikes to let the electricity breathe.
We’re seeing what we expected to see when the fastball and changeup show up together. Hence has held hitters to a .181 average while running a 12.7% swinging-strike rate and 10.1 K/9 through 21.1 innings. The bat-missing is real, and the contact he does allow has largely been contained: 45.8% ground-ball rate and just one home run allowed (0.42 HR/9). That combination of whiffs and contact management has driven a 2.95 ERA with supporting estimators (3.80 FIP, 4.18 xFIP) that say it hasn’t been smoke and mirrors. You can see the blueprint, ride up in the zone, kill speed with the change, then land one of the breakers to finish.
The red flag remains the same: free passes. A 5.48 BB/9 still tells the story of an arm that’s electric but occasionally erratic, though this season’s command issues came with context. Hence missed a large chunk of 2025 with a rib-cage strain that sidelined him early and ultimately limited him to just 21.1 innings. The long layoff clearly disrupted his rhythm and release timing, and it showed in the walk totals. When he’s healthy and in rhythm, the sequencing sharpens, the secondaries tunnel more consistently, and hitters are forced to respect the velocity gaps. But coming off the IL, he often opened counts 1-0 or 2-1, nibbling instead of attacking, and efficiency vanished. When the fastball landed early and the changeup found the zone, the at-bats unraveled quickly, but that version showed up inconsistently as he worked back to full strength.
There’s plenty to bet on. Hence is an athletic mover, the changeup is a legitimate out pitch, and both breaking balls can miss bats when tunneled off the heater. The underlying profile says strikeouts without blow-up home run issues, which gives him a wider runway to iron out the strike-throwing. The performance gap versus league average, better ERA, WHIP, and K/9 with suppressed homers, backs up the eye test. Tighten the fastball command a half-grade, and this jumps from “intriguing” to “impact.”
Fantasy Outlook
Hence likely would’ve debuted in 2025 if not for the injury, pushing his ETA back to 2026. For Dynasty managers, the appeal hasn’t changed; it’s still mid-rotation upside with strikeout potential that plays right now. The command needs to tighten, but the raw stuff is too good to ignore. In Roto, he’s a long-term stash with impact upside once the innings ramp back up; in Points, he’ll need efficiency gains before becoming more than a matchup play. The ingredients for a breakout are still intact; it’s just a matter of health and refinement catching up to the stuff.
