Boston Red Sox – Team Update
More #RedSox injury updates:
– Arroyo took swings during Crawford's live BP.
– Story threw up to 75 yesterday and swung the bat.
– Whitlock pitching Tuesday and Sunday, then Sox will decide next steps.
– Chang hitting off the tee. Duvall not hitting off the tee yet.
— Mac Cerullo (@MacCerullo) May 13, 2023
Good news for both Crawford and Arroyo, as they were both able to square off against a live opponent. Crawford would be the one who is further along, as he’s been rumored to be returning next weekend. Story continues to progress as he’s now advanced to some offensive skills. That said, there’s still a long way for him to go before even a rehab assignment is considered. As for Whitlock, while it’s encouraging to see that the team has his week lined up, there’s no guarantee that he will return after that. Furthermore, Boston will need to figure out a role for him, since they’re already at a six-man rotation.
Yasmani Grandal – C Chicago White Sox
Grifol on Grandal being scratched from today's lineup: "Better to be safe, yeah. Especially with the offday on Monday. We’ll reassess it tomorrow. If he can play tomorrow, I might put him in there. If not we’ll give him the extra 48 hours so he can be ready to go on Tuesday."
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) May 13, 2023
It’s looking like Grandal will be ready to return either today or this Tuesday. Either way, he’s close.
Elvis Andrus – SS Chicago White Sox
Prior to tonight’s game vs. Houston, the #WhiteSox placed infielder Elvis Andrus on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique and reinstated infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez from the 10-day injured list.
— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) May 13, 2023
Not an ideal situation for the team, as Andrus will miss at least 10 days with an injury as tricky as an oblique. Hanser Alberto will take his place for now.
Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds
Breaking injury news for the @Reds
Nick Lodolo has been scratched from his start tomorrow and will return to Cincinnati to be evaluated. @JimDayTV pic.twitter.com/jAG9fDB2gb
— Bally Sports Cincinnati (@BallySportsCIN) May 13, 2023
Very disheartening news. Lodolo has been battling an ankle injury which has unfortunately spread into his calf. It was a late-night scratch for the team while they figure out what to do. This has apparently been bothering him all season, which could explain his struggles to begin the year. Levi Stoudt will hopefully be there on time to take his place. Take Lodolo out of your lineups for today.
TJ Friedl – OF Cincinnati Reds
David Bell on TJ Friedl (oblique): "What they found in the MRI was encouraging in a way, it was mild. The area it’s in, you have to stay cautious. We will be cautious. In the next 48 hours, we’ll decide if he goes to the IL or not."
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) May 13, 2023
Bell also said that he doesn’t feel that Friedl’s situation is a multi-week injury, hence the decision to be made. Stay tuned as we’ll know more in the upcoming days, if not much sooner.
Lance McCullers Jr. – SP Houston Astros
Lance McCullers Jr. threw his scheduled bullpen today in Chicago. Mixed in four seamers, changeups and sinkers. Velo around 89-91 mph. He’ll start throwing cutters off the mound on Tuesday. Had started throwing breaking balls on flat ground.
— Danielle Lerner (@danielle_lerner) May 13, 2023
McCullers has yet to throw cutters, which will take place this week. His low-velocity readings have to be worrisome to the team as he just doesn’t yet have everything he once did. While the team could use his services, he’ll need to get healthy first.
Chas McCormick – OF Houston Astros
Dusty Baker said Chas McCormick will play on Sunday in Chicago.
— Danielle Lerner (@danielle_lerner) May 13, 2023
Be prepared.
Anthony Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels
Anthony Rendon was removed from tonight’s game with left groin tightness.
— Angels PR (@LAAngelsPR) May 14, 2023
Rendon’s situation seems to be one that warrants a DTD designation. That said, given his extensive injury history, nothing seems safe here. We’ll know more after he gets some testing.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. – OF Miami Marlins
Right foot contusion for Jazz, per the #Marlins. X rays were negative
— Jordan McPherson (@J_McPherson1126) May 13, 2023
A fantastic piece of news that the injury sustained here is nothing more than a contusion. Chisholm Jr. went down hard after running into a wall, but he was able to walk off under his own power. Given that the team has Monday off, it would seem logical for him to miss today and get two days off here.
Jesus Sanchez – OF Miami Marlins
Skip said MRI for OF Jesus Sanchez. Called it a “gut punch.” Sounds like he will miss time.
— Craig Mish (@CraigMish) May 13, 2023
No word here if the gut punch was a reference to what the MRI results were or that he is injured again after battling back. Either way, we’ll know more today.
Max Kepler – OF Minnesota Twins
Max Kepler is going on the injured list with a hamstring strain. Trevor Larnach is rejoining the Twins.
— Betsy Helfand (@betsyhelfand) May 13, 2023
It just seems like it’s one thing after another with Kepler. He will miss another ten days, at minimum, with an injury.
Anthony DeSclafani – SP San Francisco Giants
Gabe Kapler said Anthony DeSclafani dropped a piano bench on his right toe a few weeks ago. It was bugging him a bit tonight and ultimately led to his early exit.
— Maria I. Guardado (@mi_guardado) May 14, 2023
DeSclafani apparently injured himself while playing piano with his son. The hope is that it can heal on its own and he won’t require a trip to the Injured List similar to Joe Musgrove.
Joc Pederson – OF San Francsico Giants
Joc Pederson is day to day after taking a pitch off his right hand while squaring to bunt yesterday. There was some concern about a possible fracture, but X-rays came back negative.
— Maria I. Guardado (@mi_guardado) May 13, 2023
The good news is that the finger is not broken, but merely a contusion. The bad news is that these can hurt, so until he can hold a bat and swing, he’ll be out. Consider Pederson DTD.
