Cody Morris – RHP Cleveland Guardians

This was the first action for Morris all season, and it lasted just one inning. He is recovering from a teres major strain and looked the part while pitching here. While it’s too early to say much of anything else, there’s a chance that he will be groomed for long relief, given how well the Guardians’ rotation looks now. There is a lot of potential already there, and Morris has an extensive track record of injuries already. Morris is the Guardians’ 14th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.

George Valera – OF Cleveland Guardians

You can sense the frustration with Antonetti here, not directed at Valera, but rather with him. As stated, Valera has had a rough go around here in 2023, recovering from one injury after another. Last season saw him play in 132 games over two minor league levels. Yet here, at the end of May, he’s only appeared in five games and recorded three hits. Depending on the timeline of this injury, we may not see the promising OF up with Cleveland until later in the year, if at all. Valera is baseball’s 39th-ranked-ranked prospect, according to MLB.

Sixto Sanchez – RHP Miami Marlins

Sanchez has been throwing at various distances for quite a while and hasn’t had any setbacks. He will continue to do so before heading onto a mound, which would be a major step forward for him. Since he hasn’t pitched in a game since 2021, the team would be wise to be as cautious as possible, given the potential that was once there. Sanchez is the Marlins’ 11th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.

Jake Eder – LHP Miami Marlins

Eder’s setback was an unfortunate one in the spring. He just stepped the wrong way, and the result was a fracture in his left foot. The hope is that once he is able to begin throwing again, he can pitch and possibly debut with the Marlins later this season. It’s unclear if this foot injury will postpone that until the 2024 season. Eder is the Marlins’ 5th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.

Royce Lewis – 3B/SS Minnesota Twins

Lewis has looked like a stud while rehabbing. With a glove, he’s been able to make incredible plays, such as the one above. With the bat, he’s shown power and speed while hitting well above .300 over 29 plate appearances. In all, he has split time at both shortstop and third base, while committing just one error. There are some concerns though. First, his strikeout rate is at 32%, which is higher than it’s ever been at any time and at any level. It’s unclear if he’s just trying something new, is anxious, or is just working through some of the kinks. Secondly, he has walked only twice while rehabbing, which is also unlike anything we’ve seen before. Third, there is an influx of players already there for the Twins, so the playing time may not necessarily be there when he does arrive. All that being said, he’s someone to be added regardless of these concerns, which should be kept in your back pocket. He is due back any day now, so watch out for his return. Lewis is baseball’s 34th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.

Andrew Painter RHP Philadelphia Phillies

Painter throwing these short bullpen sessions evolved from him successfully throwing from long distances while playing catch. The team will continue to slowly develop and bring along their prized prospect here, despite the push earlier this year to have him pitch. Looking at the Phillies’ rotation, there doesn’t seem to be a need to rush him up to the majors, though one can never have enough pitching. Painter is baseball’s 10th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.

Heliot Ramos – OF San Francisco Giants

Ramos injured himself while in the minors, after being sent down due to early-season struggles. While in the minors, he had gone 8-for-38 (.211) with just one home run and three steals. He was once considered a promising bat with power, but his stock has fallen off dramatically over the years, bringing to question his long-term future with the club. Ramos is the Giants’ 20th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.

Curtis Mead – 2B Tampa Bay Rays

Mead last played a game on April 29 and has been sidelined with a wrist injury ever since. The original diagnosis there was anywhere from one week to four, and this weekend will mark that high point of that estimate. There have been very few updates on his condition, and the hope is that he can return sometime soon, but it’s been a very disappointing start to the year for the promising prospect. The expectation was for him to debut at some point this season, but his struggles at the plate (.221 BA, 2 HR) will need to be rectified before anything else. Mead is baseball’s 25th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.

Kumar Rocker – RHP Texas Rangers

It’s a disappointing end to the pitcher’s season, as he will miss the rest of this year and most of next year too. It was noted by the team that this injury had nothing to do with the one that caused the Mets to pass on signing him after being drafted by them a few years ago. This was an injury that happened while pitching and developing. It happened in the fifth inning of his fateful game, after dominating the previous four innings. He left with two outs due to elbow discomfort. The decision to have the surgery was made shortly after that. Rocker is Texas’ 9th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.

Rickey Tiedemann – LHP Toronto Blue Jays

It was also noted that Tiedemann feels like himself again, and is excited to begin throwing a baseball again. What that throwing program consists of is anyone’s guess, but he will likely begin by playing catch before finally heading to a mound. It’s been about two weeks since that report was made, and it’s unclear when things will get started or if they already have. The biggest takeaway should be that he finally feels better and the team will work on getting him to debut in 2023. Tiedemann is baseball’s 24th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.

Addison Barger – SS Toronto Blue Jays

Barger last played a game on April 28, but recently had his elbow checked out. There was no structural damage, giving hope that he would be able to debut with the Jays later in the season. There has been no indication of when he will get back to action or of any treatment being done. The fact of the matter is that he struggled mightily to start the year. He has just one home run in 87 plate appearances this year and saw his strikeout rate balloon to well over 30%. These numbers are a far contrast to last season where a third of the time he had much better numbers. It’s unclear if the elbow contributed to this or not. Barger is Toronto’s 6th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.
