Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Wednesday, September 13, 2023. In this edition, Max Scherzer injured his tricep last night while pitching and a scheduled MRI should reveal any damage. MLB Injury Report
Kenley Jansen – RP Boston Red Sox
Kenley Jansen was removed with fatigue and illness symptoms.
— Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) September 13, 2023
Jansen pitched in three consecutive games last week and then sat for seven days. He came back and threw thirteen pitches and felt ill and tired. It’s fair to wonder if something else is up here, or if it’s just age in a season where his workload has been forced to speed up due to the new rules. Stay tuned.
Jeimer Candelario – 1B – Chicago Cubs
Jeimer Candelario has been put on the 10-day IL with low back strain.
Alexander Canario has been recalled and is currently in the Cubs clubhouse.
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) September 12, 2023
Candelario will miss the next week or so, and Cody Bellinger will take over at first base for the time being. It’s unclear if Matt Mervis will play again for the Cubs this season.
Shane Bieber – SP Cleveland Guardians
This Bieber doesn't have any hits.@CleGuardians hurler Shane Bieber was stingy in his first rehab start with the @AkronRubberDuck:
3 2/3 IP
0 H
2 R/1 ER
1 BB
4 K
50 pitches; 32 strikes pic.twitter.com/f4swKRxTYV— Minor League Baseball (@MiLB) September 12, 2023
And incredibly solid performance and good to see Bieber get stretched out to 50 pitches. The 20th of September remains a possibility.
Riley Greene – OF Detroit Tigers
Riley Greene is currently undergoing tests and getting medical opinions on elbow. No news yet.
— Jason Beck (@beckjason) September 12, 2023
Greene last played a game on September 1, and he may not return at all this season.
Mike Moustakas – INF Los Angeles Angels
Mike Moustakas was removed from tonight’s game due to left wrist soreness.
— Angels PR (@LAAngelsPR) September 13, 2023
There should be an update today as to whether or not Moustakas will be available for today’s game.
Mark Canha – 1B/OF Milwaukee Brewers
Brewers OF/DH Mark Canha will have his wrist examined by the doc tomorrow. He said he’s had this problem before and has been able to come back quick, sometimes with a cortisone shot.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) September 13, 2023
Canha got in one at-bat before exiting last night’s game. It’s somewhat concerning that this is a recurring injury, but it doesn’t sound like it will be too big of a deal if it’s healed before. That said, there’s only so many times he can go through this routine before something more major.
Garrett Mitchell – OF Milwaukee Brewers
Garrett Mitchell could be cleared to start playing in Nashville as soon as Friday or Saturday. He has a doctor consultation that will determine if he’s able to play. If he does start playing, he will be in Nashville until the end of their season.
— Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) September 11, 2023
Mitchell last played in April, so a return in some capacity at any point would be peace of mind for him and the team. The most important part would be to not rush him back.
Adrian Houser – SP Milwaukee Brewers
An update for your Brewers pitching probables: Still TBD tomorrow; we’ll get an update tonight after this game plays out. And Adrian Houser will come off the IL to start Thursday.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) September 12, 2023
Be prepared.
Aaron Ashby – SP/RP Milwaukee Brewers
An update for your Brewers pitching probables: Still TBD tomorrow; we’ll get an update tonight after this game plays out. And Adrian Houser will come off the IL to start Thursday.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) September 12, 2023
Ashby has a 4.91 ERA and a 2.18 WHIP over his first three rehab appearances after having arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder earlier in the year. The team is wise to take their time with him as he rediscovers his ability to throw.
Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers
Christian Yelich is out of the lineup yet again today, but he’s feeling better and is close to a return says Craig Counsell.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) September 12, 2023
Yelich last played on September 9, and the team is adamant that he is fine going forward. Time will tell if that is true.
Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees
Yankees claimed RHP Luke Weaver off waivers from the Mariners. Nestor Cortes transferred to the 60-day IL to open a spot on the 40-man roster.
— Greg Joyce (@GJoyce9) September 12, 2023
This was merely a formality in order to claim Luke Weaver from waivers. Cortes won’t play again this season.
Anthony Rizzo – 1B New York Yankees
Anthony Rizzo was moved to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man. #Yankees https://t.co/jIie3vNoX6
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) September 12, 2023
This was merely a formality to activate Zach McAllister from Triple-A Scranton-Wilks/Barre. Rizzo won’t play again this season.
Oneil Cruz – SS Pittsburgh Pirates
Missed this earlier, but Derek Shelton said on his @937theFan radio show that Oneil Cruz won’t return during the 2023 regular season. Not a surprise considering what assistant GM Kevan Graves said Sunday, the calendar and Cruz’s modest progress.
— Jason Mackey (@JMackeyPG) September 12, 2023
Cruz was slated to return in mid-August, but a series of setbacks coupled with a slow recovery didn’t allow this to happen. He is aiming and on track to be healthy entering Spring Training.
Yu Darvish – San Diego Padres
Yu Darvish has been shut down for the rest of the season. He learned recently he has an olecranon stress reaction in his elbow, and tried to pitch through it. After not progressing as hoped, he will rest for the next several weeks.
— Dennis Lin (@dennistlin) September 13, 2023
There has been no indication that he won’t enter Spring Training as 100% healthy.
Patrick Bailey – C San Francisco Giants
Back on #SFGiants duty again today. Spoke briefly to Patrick Bailey, and he said he should be good to go tomorrow when he’s eligible to come off the 7-day IL (concussion protocol)
— Curtis Pashelka (@CurtisPashelka) September 12, 2023
Be prepared.
Willson Contreras – C St. Louis Cardinals
Willson Contreras left the game with a right hand contusion. #STLCards
— Lynn Worthy (@LWorthySports) September 13, 2023
The severity of the injury is unknown, but we should get updates later on. Chances are that he doesn’t play today.
Nolan Gorman – 2B St. Louis Cardinals
Nolan Gorman came out of the game due to right hamstring tightness. #STLCards
— Lynn Worthy (@LWorthySports) September 12, 2023
Gorman injured himself while trying to beat out a base hit. Expect updates later today.
Yandy Diaz – INF Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays say Diaz left the game with "a testicular contusion"
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) September 13, 2023
Diaz suffered this after a foul ball. Consider him DTD.
Max Scherzer – SP Texas Rangers
Scherzer exited Tuesday night’s game with triceps spasms. He himself said that it’s possible that this issue is related to the forearm tightness that cost him some time earlier this year. The results of the MRI should have a huge impact on the team, for him, and for fantasy purposes. Stay tuned.
Toronto Blue Jays – Team Update
Brandon Belt re-aggravated back during second AB last night, said John Schneider.
Matt Chapman going through full day, including hitting off velo machine. Hope is he returns later this week.
Whit Merrifield dealing with left groin tightness, likely available if needed
— Shi Davidi (@ShiDavidi) September 12, 2023
Belt has been in and out of the lineup for a while now with varying injuries. He remains DTD. Chapman is getting closer to a return and may not even need a rehab assignment. As for Merrifield, he did come into the game last night, which is good news for his status moving forward.
