Top 30 Chicago White Sox Prospects To Target In Dynasty

Next up in my Top 30 Organizational Prospect Rankings are the Chicago White Sox. This is a team that has sold off several big names over the last two seasons and they have done a solid job replenishing the farm system. As the baseball world waits to hear if Dylan Cease is moved this off-season we will dive into the top 30 White Sox prospects to target in dynasty leagues.

Top 10 White Sox Prospects

Colson Montgomery, SS

(64 GP, .287/.456/.484, 8 HR, 51 R, 37 RBI, 2 SB)

With Tim Anderson now a free agent, there is a very real chance that Colson Montgomery could break camp in 2024 with the Chicago White Sox. In 2023 Montgomery dealt with injuries that kept him out until July but once he joined the Winston-Salem Dash he began to hit. In 17 games played with the Dash, Mongomery slashed .345/.537/.552 with three home runs, 15 runs scored, and 10 RBIs. Colson was patient at the plate, walking 24.4% while only striking out 18.3% of the time. After the promotion to Double-A Birmingham Montgomery slashed .244/.400/.427 with four home runs, 27 runs scored, and 21 RBIs in just 37 games played.

The White Sox sent their top prospect out to the Arizona Fall League where he slashed .244/.300/.415 with three home runs and 20 RBIs. Montgomery also won the Fall Stars MVP award for a mammoth home run that put the AL All-Stars ahead for good. This is a prospect you want to have on your dynasty teams as he is one you can build a team around and he should get an opportunity rather quickly in 2024.

Bryan Ramos, 2B/SS

(81 GP, .264/.358/.450, 15 HR, 49 R, 50 RBI, 4 SB)

Bryan Ramos played the majority of the 2023 season in Double-A Birmingham. Across 77 games, Ramos slashed .271/.369/.457 with 14 home runs, 48 RBIs, and four stolen bases. Ramos showed solid plate discipline, walking a career-high 11.1% while striking out just 12.9% of the time.

The White Sox sent Ramos to the Arizona Fall League where he slashed .267/.337/.430 with four home runs, 19 runs scored, 10 RBIs, and one stolen base in 23 games played with the Glendale River Dogs. For Dynasty Ramos is a smart stash as he could play every position on the infield (except catcher) and could be useful for the White Sox, potentially as early as 2024.

Noah Schultz, LHP

(10 GS, 27 IP, 38 K, 1.33 ERA)

In his first taste of professional ball, Noah Schultz did well, playing the entire 2023 season in Low-A Kannapolis. It was apparent the White Sox wanted to limit his innings due to a forearm strain he dealt with for the first two months of the season. As a result, he made just 10 starts and was limited to 27 innings. With a 12.67 K/9 and a stellar 2.00 BB/9, there was a lot to like with the innings Schultz did pitch. The 20-year-old finished the season with a 1.33 ERA and .175 average against before going down with a shoulder impingement.

Time will tell how Noah Schultz will fair without the limitations of 2023 and hopefully, he will come back healthy. Schultz features a three-pitch mix in a fastball, slider, and change-up so he is definitely a pitcher to watch how the change-up develops and if he adds another breaking pitch to the mix.

Jacob Gonzalez, SS

(34 GP, .211/.333/.260, 1 HR, 18 R, 17 RBI, 1 SB)

Selected 15th overall in 2023 out of the University of Mississippi, Jacob Gonzalez was solid for the Rebels. In 54 games, Gonzalez slashed .327/.435/.564 with 10 home runs, 46 runs scored, and 51 RBIs. Gonzalez was known as a solid contact hitter during his time at Mississippi but he didn’t fair so well when he got his first taste of pro ball. In 30 games at Low-A Kannapolis, Gonzalez slashed .207/.328/.261 with one home run, 16 runs scored, 13 RBIs, and one stolen base. Despite the rough slash line, Jacob Gonzalez showed a strong eye at the plate walking 14.6% while only striking out 16.8% of the time.

This seems like a solid time to buy into Gonzalez’s slow start to his career as I think there is potential for 20 home runs with a solid OBP coming from either the shortstop or second base position.

Edgar Quero, C

(101 GP, .255/.380/.351, 6 HR, 52 R, 57 RBI, 1 SB)

One of the major acquisitions at the trade deadline in 2023 was Edgar Quero, a 20-year-old catcher who skyrocketed up dynasty rankings with a strong season in 2022. After coming over to the White Sox organization and establishing himself at Double-A Birmingham, Quero slashed .277/.366/.393 with three home runs and 22 RBIs. Quero has solid plate discipline, walking 12.7% while only striking out 17.2% of the time, both of which are on par with his career averages.

Quero displayed above-average power in 2022, slugging 17 home runs with a .530 SLG in 111 games in Low-A. In 2023 he combined for just 6 total home runs in 101 games between the Angels and White Sox organizations. This is a solid OBP catcher to stash in dynasty leagues though I don’t believe he will be helping much in power, RBIs, or stolen bases limiting his upside long-term.

Jake Eder, LHP

(14 GS, 56.2 IP, 70 K, 6.35 ERA)

Coming over from the Miami Marlins at the trade deadline, Jake Eder just came back from Tommy John which kept him out the entire 2022 season. Last year he came back strong with his strikeouts though the walks went up quite a bit which is not uncommon for pitchers coming back from TJ. After the trade, Eder was sent to Double-A Birmingham where he started five games, pitching 17.1 innings while striking out 22 batters (11.42 K/9) with a .360 average against and finishing with an 11.42 ERA. There is no doubt it was not exactly what the White Sox wanted to see so they sent Jake Eder out to the Arizona Fall League.

The results were not what they might have hoped for in Arizona either. In six appearances (5 starts) Eders struck out 16 batters in 17.2 innings pitched, finishing with a 6.11 ERA. Hopefully, Eder will start the season back in Double-A and get some confidence before making the push to Triple-A Charlotte. At this point, I don’t see a front-line starter in Eder more like a back-end rotational arm or a high-leverage reliever that will let the fastball and slider play up.

Wilfred Veras, 1B/3B

(130 GP, .286/.325/.466, 17 HR, 75 R, 93 RBI, 24 SB)

Wilfred Veras was a fun prospect to watch live in Winston-Salem in 2023. The 20-year-old Veras slashed .277/.316/.438 with 11 home runs, 52 runs scored, 63 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 92 games played. Once promoted to Double-A Birmingham Veras seemed to get even better slashing .309/.349/.533 with six home runs, 23 runs scored, 30 RBIs, and six stolen bases in just 38 games played. Veras isn’t much of a walker as he sat at 5% BB% in 2023 and averaged a 26.1% strikeout rate between High-A and Double-A.

For dynasty purposes, Wilfred Veras is one of the lower-key prospects in the Chicago White Sox system that I believe could have a dynasty impact as an everyday player. This season he was also taking reps in the outfield in Double-A increasing his potential value.

Nick Nastrini, RHP

(25 GS, 114.2 IP, 139 K, 4.08 ERA)

Coming over from the Dodgers at the trade deadline Nick Nastrini was known as a strikeout pitcher who has big upside. Since coming over to the White Sox Nastrini continued to strike batters out at a high rate (13.08 K/9 in 21.1 IP in AA & 10.53 K/9 in 19.2 IP in AAA). What has continued to be an issue for Nastini has been the walks as he finished the season in Triple-A with a 4.58 BB/9.

With a four-pitch mix in a mid-90s fastball that reaches 98, a mid-80s slider with high spin rates, an 80 MPH curveball with a solid break, and a mid-80s change-up that has a great fade. Nastrini has what it takes to remain a starter and could be a solid SP 2 if he is able to limit the walks. Otherwise, he profiles as a back-end starter or potential late-inning reliever.

Terrell Tatum, OF

(125 GP, .248/.397/.367, 6 HR, 89 R, 51 RBI, 47 SB)

Terrell Tatum was an interesting bat when I saw him in High-A Winston Salem. The 24-year-old Tatum was a bit old for the level and always seemed to be making things happen on the base paths or was the player being driven in. Across 60 games with the High-A Dash Tatum slashed .268/.434/.421 with four home runs, 54 runs scored, 29 RBIs, and stole 32 bases. Tatum had a knack for getting on base and the 21% walk rate definitely helped.

Once promoted to Double-A Birmingham Tatum struggled a bit as he slashed .230/.361/.315 with two home runs, 35 runs scored, 22 RBI, and 15 stolen bases. Tatum continued to walk above average at 15.2% but the strikeout rate climbed to 29%. Overall Tatum could be a solid defensive outfielder for the White Sox but I don’t see him being a dynasty asset unless he plays every day then he could contribute in OBP and stolen bases.

Loidel Chapelli, 2B

(106 GP, .254/.361/.411, 10 HR, 73 R, 57 RBI, 26 SB)

It was a strong season for Loidel Chapelli getting his first assignment state side with the High-A Winston Salem Dash. In 106 games played with the Dash Chapelli slashed .254/.361/.411 with 10 home runs, 73 runs scored, 57 RBIs, and stole 26 bases in 32 attempts. Chapelli showed a solid eye at the plate walking 13.1% while only striking out 24.7% in 466 plate appearances. Overall this could be a super-utility bat for the White Sox long-term for a dynasty he could be a useful bench bat but more than likely, not a starter.
