Top 10 Third Base Prospects

Junior Caminero, 3B TB

(117 GP, .324/.384/.591, 31HR, 85 R, 94 RBI, 5 SB)

Being 19 years old and playing Double-A ball is impressive but belting 31 home runs with a .975 OPS is unheard of. Caminero has elite bat speed and hits the ball to all fields. He has the potential to be a high-average hitter with plus-plus power. During his short stint in the majors, he showed off his plus power with a 112-mph max exit velocity. Julio Rodriguez won many fantasy leagues during his rookie season, Junior Caminero can be this year’s version minus the speed. Despite the lack of speed Caminero sits atop our third base prospect rankings, especially if your focus is on the 2024 season.

Coby Mayo, 3B BAL

(140 GP, .290/.410/.563, 29 HR, 84 R, 99 RBI, 5 SB)

A simple comp for Coby Mayo is Austin Riley. Mayo is a power-hitting third baseman who moves extremely well for his size, and has the arm to stay at the hot corner. In addition to his 29 home runs, he also smacked 45 doubles.  His batting practice before games will be worth the price of admission alone.  The only issue with Mayo is that making the Baltimore club is out of his hands. With so much young firepower in the Orioles lineup, getting playing time might take a little longer than it would in other organizations.

Noelvi Marte, 3B CIN

(92 GP, .279/.358/.454, 11 HR, 69 R, 45 RBI, 18 SB)

Noelvi Marte, who was part of the Luis Castillo blockbuster deal, showed why he has been rated as a top-100 prospect by most scouting services. He had very solid numbers at two minor league levels, and during his call-up to the majors he hit .316/.366/.456 in 35 games. Marte has 60-grade power to all fields as he had a 46.1% hard-hit rate and a max exit velocity of 115.6 mph, all with just a 20.3 strikeout rate.  He will need to adjust against breaking and off-speed pitches as he just hit .219 and .200 versus them at the major league level. Marte also shows sneaky speed, he has stolen 17-plus bases in each of his four seasons in the minors.

Colt Keith, 3B DET

(126 GP, .306/.380/.552, 27 HR, 88 R, 101 RBI, 3 SB)

Entering the 2023 season, Keith was already considered one of the best hitters in the minor leagues and he did not disappoint. He batted .306 with 68 extra-base hits while striking out a respectable 21% across two levels. Keith started 61 games at third base and 41 games at second base. The Detroit Tigers continue to improve with young talent and with nobody holding down third or second base, Keith will be given every opportunity to make the big-league club with a strong performance during spring training.

Brady House, 3B WAS

(88 GP, .312/.365/.497, 12 HR, 52 R, 47 RBI, 9 SB)

There were mixed feelings towards House entering the 2023 season because of a back injury that limited him to just 45 games played in 2022. House shifted full-time from shortstop to third base in 2023. He showed why he was drafted 11th overall out of high school in the 2021 draft as he posted a .862 OPS in 2023.  He is an aggressive swinger with tons of raw power. Just 20 years old at Double-A, he hit .312 and slugged .497 but will need to get more selective at the plate because he just walked 7 times but struck out 42 times.

Curtis Mead, 3B TB

(65 GP, .287/.377/.502, 9 HR, 41 R, 49 RBI, 4 SB)

Originally signed out of Australia by the Phillies and then traded to the Rays, Mead is seen as one of the best pure hitters in the minor leagues. In April, Mead was hit by a pitch causing an injury to his wrist, and missed almost two months of the 2023 season.  When he returned, he posted a .294/.385/.515 slash line while walking 35 times and only striking out 48 times at Triple-A.  When he got the call-up, he only posted .253/.326/.349 in a limited 83 at-bats. Mead should be eligible at third base and second base in most league formats.  The Rays showed their confidence in Mead by starting him in both playoff games.

Bryan Ramos, 3B CWS

(81 GP, .264/.358/.450, 15 HR, 49 R, 50 RBI, 4 SB)

The White Sox recently named their long-time employee Chris Getz as their new general manager and he talked about how everyone on the major league roster is available.  Currently, Yoan Moncada is blocking Ramos from getting call but that may change anytime soon. Ramos continues to improve each season in the minors as he projects to be an above-average hitter with above-average power. He hit 14 home runs in just 77 games and also showed a strong walk rate of 11% at Double-A Birmingham this past season at just the age of 21. He won’t steal many bases but is athletic enough and has a strong arm to be able to stick at the hot corner.

Tyler Black, 3B MIL

(123 GP, .284/.417/.513, 18 HR, 105 R, 73 RBI, 55 SB)

He has been known for his hit tool since he was drafted 33rd overall in 2021. Black finished at Triple-A Nashville batting .310/.428/.514 in 173 plate appearances, he also had 27 walks to 23 strikeouts.  Most scouts believe he will be a 15-20 home run hitter. Showing plus speed he converted 55 stolen bases on 67 attempts with an 82% success rate.  The Brewers have nobody blocking Black from entering the 2024 season at the Major League level. The only negative regarding Black is his below-average fielding, he has bounced around the field at 2B, 3B, and outfield in his minor league career.

Brock Wilken, 3B MIL

(47 GP, .285/.414/.473, 5 HR, 27 R, 29 RBI, 4 SB)

Another Brewers prospect that is hit over field. This massive 6-foot-4, 225-pound slugger is Wake Forest’s all-time home run king. Wilken has the potential to develop into a 70-grade power. In 173 games at Wake Forest, he amassed a slash line of .299/.419/.679 with 71 home runs. There are questions regarding his hit tool as he had a 36% strikeout rate in his pro debut. As he climbs higher levels and faces better pitching, he will need to adjust his swing. His brief stint in Double-A slash line was .217/.280/.565 in 23 at-bats.

Justyn-Henry Malloy, 3B DET

(135 GP, .277/.417/.474, 23 HR, 89 R, 83 RBI, 5 SB)

Malloy has shown a plus batting eye at the plate with a career .410 on-base percentage in his pro career. He led the minor leagues with 110 walks in 2023.  He could be considered a boring prospect because he doesn’t have that one extreme plus tool, but he does everything very solid. His career minor league slash line is almost identical to his 2023 season with a slash line of .282/.410/.461. He has nothing left to prove in the minors as he played the whole season at Triple-A. Besides playing third base he also played left and right field, giving the Tigers options to put him in the lineup.
