This week’s edition of Dynasty Baseball Buys and Sells features all infielders. The dynasty baseball sells include two former first overall draft picks and the dynasty baseball buys consist of a prospect on a meteoric rise and a shortstop who has been quite unlucky in the power department. In case you missed it, you should check out last week’s edition of Dynasty Baseball Buys and Sells.
Dynasty Baseball Buys
Oneil Cruz, SS, Pittsburgh Pirates
We’ve never seen the true potential of what Cruz can do over a full season. He played 87 games in 2022, which is a career-high for the 25-year-old. During that season, he knocked out 17 home runs, swiped 10 stolen bases, while slashing .233/.294/.450. Cruz only played nine games in 2023 due to a broken leg he suffered in a collision at home plate with Seby Zavala.
Cruz has been one of the unluckiest hitters in terms of power according to some of the advanced metrics. He has the sixth-highest barrel percentage in the majors. The other five hitters above him all have at least twice as many home runs as Cruz. He also ranks in the 96th percentile or better in the league in exit velocity, bat speed, barrel percentage, and hard hit percentage. I think it’s a good bet that more of his barreled balls start turning into home runs in the future and for that reason I would consider him a dynasty baseball buy.
Kristian Campbell, 2B/OF, Boston Red Sox
Campbell was not on any top prospect rankings by Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus or MLB.com. He is currently ranked as the Boston Red Sox number 30 prospect by MLB.com. Campbell was drafted in the fourth round of the 2023 draft out of Georgia Institute of Technology. Campbell has split time in the minors this season at second base and center field.
He has been one of the fastest rising prospects this season. He was promoted to Double-A earlier this month after slashing .306/.418/.558 in High-A. Campbell has been even better at Double-A, slashing .426/.500/.741 in 13 games. He owns a 1.012 OPS in 75 career minor league games. He will most likely be disappearing from a lot of dynasty free agent pools in the near future. I recommend him as a dynasty baseball buy. Scoop him up in your league before it’s too late.
Dynasty Baseball Sells
Royce Lewis, 3B, Minnesota Twins
Lewis, a former first overall draft pick, is one of the most outstanding players in fantasy baseball. He has played 84 games in his career and has put up a .319 average with 25 home runs and 69 RBI. This season he is hitting for a .380 average with eight homers and 12 RBI in 14 games. Lewis would likely be a first-round draft pick in dynasty leagues if it wasn’t for one thing…health concerns.
It’s no mystery that Lewis has had trouble staying on the field in his career. He tore his ACL in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022 and missed a total of 375 games. He missed 47 games in 2023 due to oblique and hamstring injuries. Lewis suffered a hamstring strain in the first game of 2024 and missed 60 games. He has missed a total of 482 games since the start of 2021. I think it’s a good time to consider Lewis a dynasty baseball sell before another injury happens. Let him be someone else’s headache.
Carlos Correa, SS, Minnesota Twins
Correa is also a former first overall draft pick. He has been a very solid fantasy performer over his career, but recently he has been one of the hottest hitters on the planet. Over the last two weeks, he is hitting .500 with four home runs, 15 RBI, 14 runs scored, and a 1.284 OPS in 54 at-bats. In the last month, he is hitting a .365 average with six homers, 25 RBI, 21 runs scored a 1.030 OPS in 104 at-bats.
His dynasty value is probably the highest it has been since the 2021 season when he hit a .279 average with 26 home runs, 92 RBI, and scored 104 runs. Correa won’t be able to sustain the kind of production he has been putting up for over the last month. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect time to sell Correa in dynasty leagues. He should be able to net a significant return at this point in time.
