This week’s edition of Dynasty Baseball Buys features a player with a cheap price tag, who could pay big dividends in 2025, and a minor league player widely available in most dynasty leagues who could be one of the top prospects entering next season. The Dynasty Sells consist of a player in the midst of a batting title chase and a starting pitcher, who is due for some regression. Dynasty Baseball Buys
Eduardo Tait, C, Philadelphia Phillies
Tait was a relatively unknown prospect coming into this season. He played 44 games in the Dominican Summer League last year. Entering this season, he was not ranked as a top-100 prospect by Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus or MLB.com. He is currently ranked the 8th best prospect in the Phillies organization. Tait was one of the youngest players in the minors last season at 16 years old.
Ethan Salas came into this season with all the hype as the best catching prospect in the minor leagues, but I believe Tait may have the highest potential of any catcher in the minor leagues. As a 17-year-old, he has slashed .316/.369/.516 in 244 plate appearances across Rookie and Single-A ball this season. He was recently promoted to Single-A, where he has already smashed three home runs in his first nine games. If you’re looking to stash a prospect for next year who could be a consensus top-25 prospect, then go grab Tait.
Luis Rengifo, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, Los Angeles Angels
Rengifo’s dynasty value is extremely low at this point as he just underwent season-ending wrist surgery on Tuesday. He ends his season with a .300 average, six home runs, 30 RBI, 41 runs, and 24 stolen bases in 304 plate appearances. The stolen bases came out of nowhere this season as his previous career high was six thefts. His power did suffer this season as he hit 16 home runs in 2023 and 17 home runs in 2022.
If you look at his power in 2023, he was on pace for 20 home runs in 500 at-bats. This season he was on pace for 42 stolen bases in 500 at-bats. If Rengifo can stay healthy enough for at least 500 at-bats next season, he has showcased 20-HR and 40-SB potential. He also hit .300 this season, showcasing that he can hit for average. His position flexibility is also a huge bonus. If you are out of playoff contention, I would consider Rengifo a dynasty baseball buy. You won’t find many players age 28 or younger next season with the potential for at least 15 home runs and 35 stolen bases that have a cheaper price tag than Rengifo.
Dynasty Baseball Sells
Steven Kwan, LF, Cleveland Guardians
Kwan has had a terrific fantasy season. He has a .332 average, 11 home runs, 32 RBI, 65 runs and nine stolen bases. He has already set a career-high in home runs this season. His next home run will double his previous career high. He is second in the majors in batting average, only trailing Bobby Witt Jr. Kwan also hardly ever strikes out, with only Luis Arraez striking out at a lower percentage.
Things have started to go downhill for Kwan lately though. He had a .396 batting average on June 20. Since then, he has hit just .261 and his average has fallen 64 points over that span. Prior to this season, Kwan had a .282 batting average in over 1,200 at-bats. Since Kwan lacks big-time power and speed, he needs to hit at least .300 to carry his fantasy value. If his average falls more in line with his .282 career average before this season, Kwan’s dynasty value will take a big hit. I would recommend him as a dynasty baseball sell.
Sean Manaea, SP, New York Mets
Manaea has enjoyed one of the best fantasy seasons of his career at 32 years old. He has compiled a 3.30 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 122 strikeouts in 120 innings. He ranks in the top 20 among qualified starters in ERA. Manaea also ranks in the top 25 among qualified starters in K/9 at 9.15. Even more amazing, he is in the top 15 among qualified starters in batting average against, ranking ahead of Freddy Peralta, George Kirby, Corbin Burnes, and Cole Ragans.
However, there are some concerning trends with Manaea. Every single one of his pitches this year is at least one mile per hour slower than last season. The biggest drop has been on his slider, which is down 2.1 miles per hour. His xERA is 4.04, his xFIP is 4.17 and his SIERA is 4.09. Manaea has never had an ERA below 3.50 in any season with at least 50 innings pitched, so it’s unlikely his ERA stays this low. I believe it would be wise to think about him as a dynasty baseball sell.
