2025 Fantasy Baseball: Starting Pitcher Rankings

Welcome to our 2025 Starter Pitcher Rankings! There may not be any other position in professional sports as tricky to evaluate and project as pitching in baseball. This is because the physical attributes of a pitcher, like their agility or strength, often don’t determine their level of success. Rather, it’s the combination of their technique and mental acuity that fuels performance, similar to golf or other precision sports.

In addition, very few pitchers offer predictability year-to-year. In fact, certain pitchers are predictably unpredictable on a yearly basis. For instance, Blake Snell goes from outright awful in the first half of seasons to seemingly unhittable in the second half. Also, Aaron Nola fluctuates between a top-tier and mediocre pitcher on an every-other-year rotation.

Thus, assessing and ranking pitchers requires deeper analysis than traditional player grades used for hitters. Beyond a player’s recent and historical performance, factors like their park dimensions, divisional matchup competitiveness, team run support, and more are of relevance. In our first starting pitcher rankings of 2025 we took all of these aspects into consideration to compile our top 175 rankings.

March Update

Since publishing our initial 2025 Starter Pitcher Rankings back in January, there have been a significant amount of relevant player updates. Unfortunately, little of the news affecting starting pitcher rankings that have come out of spring training is good. While injuries are to be expected in spring training as pitchers ramp up to peak velocities, they are never easy to accept and account for in rankings.

This is especially true so far this season as several top 25 players in our initial starting pitcher rankings have reported concerns for potential major injuries. So far we’ve learned about spring training shutdowns for Gerrit Cole, George Kirby, Grayson Rodriguez, and Luca Gil. On the bright side, there have been some encouraging reports for players returning from major injuries, like Sandy Alcantara, Shane McClanahan, Jacob deGrom, and others. As a result, we felt it necessary to thoroughly review our initial starting pitcher rankings and update to most accurately reflect player values for fantasy managers making final draft preparations.
