MLB Injury Report
San Diego Padres – Team Update
Mike Shildt said that the training staff isn't overly concerned about what was deemed a cramp for Dylan Cease, who wanted to continue pitching. Shildt also said Jackson Merrill shouldn't be compromised moving forward after being hit by a pitch in his elbow. pic.twitter.com/Wa98xuudft

There’s a lot to consider in this interview. First, Dylan Cease left Wednesday’s game with forearm cramps just a few batters after he lost his no-hit bid. The team and medical staff threw away all concerns they had here, as he passed all postgame tests that they administered to him. He said that he fully expects to make his next start, but that remains to be seen. The biggest test will be how he feels today, the day after the cramping. If he begins to recover well, then it will appear that his prediction is correct. As for Jackson Merrill, he took a ball off the elbow last night, but remained in the game. The team doesn’t foresee this to be a problem moving forward.
Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds
Hunter Greene said that he felt fantastic until his two warmup pitches in the fourth. Then, his groin grabbed at him and he didn’t feel like he’d be able to be at his best. The injury came out of nowhere.
“I’ve got a lot of power coming to the plate. I feel like I’m very strong…
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) May 8, 2025
It was a scary exit last night, as Greene left to begin the fourth inning after just 53 pitches thrown. It was revealed that this groin injury came unexpectedly, causing the early exit. The hope is that they caught it early enough in its inception to avoid any additional damage done. The team will undoubtedly offer updates throughout the week, and he may miss his next start as a result of this ailment. Stay tuned.
Cincinnati Reds – Team Update
Francona said that Marte has a grade 2 oblique strain and will be out a little while (that’s a tough, tricky injury).
Fraley ran earlier today and it “wasn’t quite there,” per Francona. He’s getting an MRI. (Something may have happened running out of the box in the ninth. He…

What an absolutely disastrous situation here. First, Noelvi Marte will miss significant time with a Grade 2 oblique strain, which, as Charlie mentions here, is a very tricky injury to overcome. The fact that it’s more intense than a mild strain means that it will require time, patience, and tolerance, things that teams struggle to possess this time of year. As for Jake Fraley, we should have more information once the results of the MRI are known. Also, Jeimer Candelario has received an epidural in his back, and his future return will be dependent on how his body responds to this. First, he will require some time to let the injection do its thing, so we should know more soon enough. Finally, Christian Encarnacion-Strand also received an epidural, and he is on his way to ramping his way back up. With the infield in shambles like this, the Reds have a lot of holes to fill, but also have an opportunity for someone to step up and take the bull by the horns.
Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update
Dave Roberts said both Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow will start playing catch on Friday. Snell is on the trip and will be in AZ, Glasnow will not.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) May 7, 2025
Both Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell have been absent from the Dodgers’ rotation since the end of April, and both are in unenviable situations. Since their absence, Snell has had a cortisone injection in his shoulder to help reduce the inflammation. Friday’s toss will be a good test to see how well that injection worked. Meanwhile, Glasnow has also experienced shoulder inflammation, but has not needed a cortisone shot. Of the two, it would appear that Snell is closer to a return, but that is simply a guess here, as he is on the road trip with the team while Glasnow is not. That being said, both will likely need rehab assignments before pitching again for the Dodgers.
Teoscar Hernandez – OF Los Angeles Dodgers
Roberts sounded much more optimistic about Hernández today. He said he's hopeful that Hernández will return in two weeks. https://t.co/ZXK6qgHpVn
— Sonja Chen (@SonjaMChen) May 7, 2025
There isn’t much to update here, other than the fact that a day after his placement on the Injured List, Hernandez is feeling much better. That said, there is still a lot of time remaining before he can return, and a lot can happen.
Joe Ryan – SP Minnesota Twins
Bailey Ober will be tomorrow’s starting pitcher. Joe Ryan is out with illness.
— Minnesota Twins (@Twins) May 8, 2025
It remains to be seen when Ryan will be back on the mound. Chances are that he will pitch at some point this weekend, depending on the severity of this illness. As for Ober, get him in your lineups.
J.T. Realmuto – C Philadelphia Phillies
Rob Thomson said his level of concern about J.T. Realmuto after he fouled a ball off his foot is "zero". No need for X-rays.
— Lochlahn March (@lochlahn) May 8, 2025
This seemingly gets rid of any worries for an absence here, as Realmuto looks to be okay fouling a foul ball to his foot. The only worry could be the day after and how he feels, as there could be some bruising. There’s a chance that he misses today’s game, but it would appear that he will avoid the Injured List altogether.
Spencer Strider – SP Atlanta Braves
Strider threw a bullpen before today’s game. Snit said he hasn’t asked how it went.
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) May 8, 2025
This was a huge step forward in the recovery process for Strider, who was able to fully extend and utilize his legs in this approach. As such, he is seemingly able to ramp his arm back up to where it should be. It remains to be seen how he feels the day after, so that si something to monitor. However, if he feels great, then fantasy owners can begin to feel the same way, as Strider might be on his way back sooner rather than later.
Andres Gimenez – 2B Toronto Blue Jays
UPDATE: 2B Andrés Giménez was removed from tonight's game as a precaution with right quad tightness.
— Toronto Blue Jays (@BlueJays) May 8, 2025
There was not much else to say about this after the game, but the team should offer updates before their game tonight.
