Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Thursday, May 29, 2025. In today’s report, we get a positive update on Jazz Chisholm Jr. and his rehab assignment. Also, the Astros continue to be in purgatory with Yordan Alvarez, not knowing if and when he’ll be ready to play. Finally, which Twins player will get reinstated tomorrow? All of that and so much more in today’s MLB Injury Report from Fantrax.
Fantrax MLB Injury Report
Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros
Astros GM Dana Brown today when asked about Alvarez's return with @SeanUnfiltered on @SportsTalk790.
"It's a matter of when he says I'm ready to go and he'll be back in the lineup."
Espada and Brown have clearly put the ball in Alvarez's court.
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) May 28, 2025
This is your daily reminder that Alvarez will return when he feels physically able and comfortable to do so. Until then, he will remain inactive.
Ronel Blanco – SP Houston Astros
It will be Tommy John surgery, Joe Espada said. https://t.co/OM9HkvQrcP
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) May 28, 2025
Blanco is the latest Astros pitcher to undergo surgery on his throwing arm. He will miss significant time here, as the usual timeline for a return is anywhere from 12-18 months. Chances are we won’t see him again until the start of the 2027 season.
Christian Walker – 1B Houston Astros
Mauricio Dubón is pinch hitting for Christian Walker, who was hit on the right hand with a 96 mph fastball earlier in the game.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) May 28, 2025
Walker was sent for X-rays, which came back negative. He appears to have avoided anything serious here, though he may need a day or two or rest before returning.
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels
Mike Trout hit against a minor league pitcher today. He also ran the bases more aggressively than yesterday, but not 100%.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) May 28, 2025
Trout continues to show progression on a daily basis. He can do more and more and push himself harder and harder. That said, these gains are incremental, but that might be just what he needs in order to ensure that he will be fine upon his return.
Yoan Moncada – 3B Los Angeles Angels
Yoán Moncada left the game with right knee soreness
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) May 29, 2025
The only update after the game was from Moncada himself, stating that he didn’t know how this injury happened, but also stating that he wasn’t concerned. The Angels don’t play until tomorrow, so we likely won’t know if he needs time off until then.
Xavier Edwards – SS Miami Marlins
Xavier Edwards will play a couple games at Triple-A Jacksonville before returning. "Get him back very soon" per manager Clayton McCullough.
Edwards will play shortstop and Otto Lopez will move back to second base.#Marlins
— Christina De Nicola (@CDeNicola13) May 28, 2025
There haven’t been many updates regarding his return, but this is an encouraging one. He had resumed baseball activities earlier in the week, and now a small rehab assignment should be enuogh to get him back atop the Marlins’ lineup.
Connor Norby – INF Miami Marlins
Closer look at the Connor Norby hit by pitch. Got him on the side of the helmet. pic.twitter.com/nAzbs7yeDG
— Fish On First (@FishOnFirst) May 28, 2025
Norby took this pitch off the helmet and stayed in the game. There were no reports about an injury after the game, but it will be important to see how he feels a day or two after the fact. For now, consider both him and the Marlins very fortunate.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. – 3B/OF New York Yankees
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is scheduled to play in a Minor League rehab game tomorrow with @SOMPatriots. The Yankees are considering having him play third base when he returns.
— Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) May 28, 2025
There were rumors of Chisholm returning soon, and this news of him starting a rehab assignment confirms that. It’s unclear if this will be lengthy, but the fact that he is ready to get into game action is a great sign that he could be back with the Yankees by this time next week.
Bo Bichette – SS Toronto Blue Jays
Bo Bichette is out of Wednesday’s Blue Jays lineup due to lower back tightness; he’s been battling it for a bit. It’s why he DH’ed on Tuesday.
Blue Jays are considering him day-to-day; he’s could be available off the bench depending on how he’s feeling throughout the game
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) May 28, 2025
The only concerning part of this report is the section stating that Bichette has been dealing with back tightness for quite some time. It’s unclear whether this lingering ailment will last a few days, weeks, or longer. However, he did come off the bench to hit a home run last night, so chances are this injury is minimal at best.
Minnesota Twins – Team Update
Matt Wallner and Byron Buxton are the primary options here. Buxton took BP today on the field. #MNTwins https://t.co/4itWoQcpue
— DanHayesMLB (@DanHayesMLB) May 29, 2025
Both Matt Wallner and Byron Buxton have shown great progress in their recoveries over the past week. While Wallner has hit four home runs in his rehab assignment, Buxton has advanced his abilities to take live batting practice as of yesterday. Of the two, it is believed that Buxton will be the one recalled, but it’s still very much up in the air.
Pittsburgh Pirates – Team Update
We have ended the rehab assignment of C/1B Endy Rodríguez and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list.
C Joey Bart was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list.
— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) May 28, 2025
It is unclear if Joey Bart will require more than the seven-day minimum for concussions, but he will, unfortunately, need some time to heal. As for Endy Rodriguez, he will likely split catching duties with Henry Davis, leaving that position wide open for a breakout.
