MLB Injury Report

Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros

This is the second time Alvarez has started swinging a bat while recovering, and he has begun to feel soreness in his hand. This is becoming a serious issue, as he is unable to ramp up his progression to the point of performing and progressing. As such, he will meet with a specialist to help determine the next and best course of action.

The point of frustration for fantasy baseball managers and, more importantly, for Yordan Alvarez, is that the medical professionals who are employed by the Astros do not know how to handle this situation? This is the second year in a row (and the second player on this list) where the team either has them do too much all at once, or where the team suffers a setback because it is too much, too fast. With this being a sports team worth billions of dollars, one would think that they would have access to the best medical team in the world, but instead, year after year, they struggle to properly assess situations and see countless setbacks with many of their key pieces. At some point, someone needs to be held accountable.

Jeremy Pena – SS Houston Astros

Mentioned earlier, Jeremy Pena is also shut down here after suffering a setback with fractured ribs. As he said in the interview, both he and the team thought that because he was feeling good, they could progress to try swinging a bat. It was after this session that he felt discomfort, and the fracture was identified. It’s unclear if those swings caused the fracture to grow (or even appear), but it’s quite possible. Yet another example of poor player management here. He may require extended time away.

Willson Contreras – 1B St. Louis Cardinals

Good news here, as there was some worry that Contreras could have had a major injury to his hand. From the looks of it, he will miss only a handful of games here with some bruising. However, given his injury history, there is still a chance that this turns into a trip to the Injured List.

Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update

Good news here on Tyler Glasnow, though he still has to go out there and perform. Still, it’s been a steady progression here, and it would appear that he is destined to return next week. As for Blake Snell and Blake Treinen, it will be a big day today for them, as they both look to return to the Dodgers. Given that Treinen is a reliever, his path will be a shorter one.

Gary Sanchez – C Baltimore Orioles

We should find out details regarding the severity of this situation today, but for now, Jacob Stallings may take over the reins at catcher because Adley Rutschman, Chadwick Tromp, and Maverick Handley are also injured right now. If this comes back as something serious, the Orioles might be forced to finally call up prospect Samual Basallo to make his Major League debut, despite their reluctance to do so.

Jordan Westburg – 2B Baltimore Orioles

From the looks of it, Westburg’s finger will be something that he has to deal with for the rest of the season. Not ideal.

Josh Naylor – 1B Arizona Diamondbacks

Over the past week, Naylor has missed time because of a shoulder injury, neck stiffness, and now this undisclosed injury. This has been the week from hell for him, and the hope is that he can avoid the Injured List. It’s unclear if that will happen, as it would appear that the writing is on the wall here.

Ezequiel Tovar – SS Colorado Rockies

Tovar last played on June 23. We are one month removed from that game, and he has yet to have a full batting practice. Chances are, he will need a somewhat lengthy rehab assignment before he’s ready to return. As such, we may not see him back until August.

Jacob Wilson – SS The Athletics

It would appear that Wilson’s injury will linger into today’s game, and he could be out of the lineup yet again. It’s a bit odd that he woke up with this ailment, meaning that he likely triggered it on Monday. The next few days will be key before deciding whether or not he needs to go on the Injured List.

Bo Bichette – SS Toronto Blue Jays

From the sounds of it, Bichette is feeling better, but the team wanted to take every precaution due to the upcoming schedule. For now, let’s take this at face value and see if he’s back in the lineup today. If he is, then we can move on. If he’s not, then there’s something else there. Stay tuned.

New York Mets – Team Update

Manaea’s outing will have to wait until today, as yesterday’s game was rained out. As for Kodai Senga, today will be a big day to help determine if he is ready for a rehab assignment. He won’t be back before the All-Star Break, but looks primed to return shortly after that.
