MLB Injury Report
Austin Riley – 3B Atlanta Braves
Additionally, Austin Riley today underwent core injury surgery, performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia, PA. He will miss the remainder of the regular season, and is expected to return for spring training in 2026.
— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) August 21, 2025
It felt like this was inevitable, given the number of setbacks he had suffered over the last little while. He will now end his season and look forward to some sort of redemption next year. These types of injuries shouldn’t have any lingering symptoms heading into the 2026 season. This will be the second consecutive season in which Riley suffers a season-ending injury in August.
Adley Rutschman – C Baltimore Orioles
Orioles’ Adley Rutschman is going on the IL with a “mild” oblique strain, Tony Mansolino announced. It’s the opposite side of the previous oblique injury.
Samuel Basallo will be thrust into an “everyday role” at catcher in his absence.
— Matt Weyrich (@ByMattWeyrich) August 21, 2025
Rutschman will head to the Injured List with a mild oblique strain. The good news is that this will give Samuel Basallo time to play almost every day at catcher. The bad news is that, because it’s an oblique injury, it could be season-ending, given the tricky nature of the ailment. These sorts of injuries tend to linger and can result in setbacks if the player does too much, too soon. With the Orioles playing for pride, the team should be in no rush to bring him back.
Jordan Westburg – 2B Baltimore Orioles
Jordan Westburg day to day. Could miss 4-6 games and still avoid IL #orioles
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) August 21, 2025
Much like Rutschman’s aforementioned timeline, the Orioles should also be in no rush for Westburg to return, either. Any pre-emptive return could cause a more serious injury, plus his time away gives the younger players a chance to learn and grow. All that being said, they may want to have him return for the peace of mind knowing that he doesn’t always need extended time away to get and stay healthy.
Evan Carter – OF Texas Rangers

It has been a season to forget for Carter, who may miss some time here. After missing extensive time in 2024, he’s already been on the Injured List twice this season, and it could be another trip here. Stay tuned.
Marcus Semien – 2B Texas Rangers
Marcus Semien left today's game with a left foot contusion. He fouled a ball off his foot in the first inning.

— kennedi landry (@kennlandry) August 21, 2025
Semien has a history of durability, so unless there is a fracture, chances are that he will return without a trip to the Injured List. The Rangers should offer updates in the coming days.
Joey Ortiz – 3B Milwaukee Brewers
Left hamstring injury for Joey Ortiz.
Unclear as to severity at this particular point in time.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) August 21, 2025
Ortiz has had a rough week, first fouling a pitch off his knee and now grabbing his leg on Thursday. He may need the weekend off to get himself ready for the stretch run. That said, if it’s revealed that it’s more severe than a mild strain, then he could require at least ten days off.
Shohei Ohtani – SP/DH Los Angeles Dodgers
Dave Roberts: "Shohei’s fine. He’ll be in there tomorrow."
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) August 21, 2025
In case there was any concern that Ohtani wouldn’t be in the lineup, this will hopefully alleviate those worries.
Roki Sasaki – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Roki Sasaki had a VERY promising 2nd rehab outing with AAA OKC.
3.1IP | 3H | 2R | 1ER | 2Ks | 3BBSplitter was A LOT better last night, IMO, landing 32% of the time in the zone. And, his splitter got 11 swings, so it was either in the zone or at least convincing hitters it was… pic.twitter.com/sjDDSnFc5K
— Dodgers Daily (@dodger_daily) August 21, 2025
A much better outing here for Saski, who worked his way through 60 pitches. The biggest lookout here was volume, and he was able to significantly increase his pitch count while also keeping some level of efficiency. While the three walks are a bit of a concern, overall, both he and the Dodgers should be happy with what he was able to do.
Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update
#Dodgers Hyeseong Kim started his rehab assignment with OKC tonight. Kim went 2 for 3 and played 5 innings in … left field. His first time playing that position
Kiké Hernandez went 2 for 3 in his second rehab game. He played CF
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) August 22, 2025
Hyeseong Kim played in a game for the first time in just under one month, and did so in left field. It was a curious placement for him, and possibly something that they will be working on for a future placement when he’s back with the Dodgers. As for Kike Hernandez, this is two straight games where he’s been productive and played in the outfield. There’s no timetable for a return.
Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update
#Dodgers Dave Roberts confirmed Tanner Scott will be activated Friday vs. Padres.
Kirby Yates will be activated on Saturday.
