We’re 131 days away from Opening Day, and the countdown rolls on with another installment of my 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up series. Coming in at #140 is Kash Mayfield, a left-hander in the San Diego Padres organization who emerged as one of the biggest risers among prep arms last season. With improved strike throwing, a fastball that plays above its velocity band, and two secondaries trending in the right direction, Mayfield enters 2026 as one of the more intriguing young pitchers to monitor in dynasty formats.

Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #140 Kash Mayfield
San Diego’s lower levels have quietly become a breeding ground for bat-missing arms, and Kash Mayfield is the latest to put his hand up in a big way. At just 20 and handling the Cal League grind, he’s punching above his weight class, missing bats, limiting damage, and stacking indicators that matter for both real-life development and fantasy projection.
This is the profile you want to bet on early. Through 60.2 innings, Mayfield owns a 2.97 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 88 strikeouts, translating to a robust 13.05 K/9. The swing-and-miss is as real as it reads; a 13.6% SwStr% for a 20-year-old in the Cal League is no accident. We don’t get public Stuff+ or CSW% at Low-A, but the run estimators back up the surface line, 3.06 FIP and 3.39 xFIP say the dominance isn’t smoke and mirrors. Relative to league, he’s running about 2.4 fewer earned runs per nine, roughly four extra strikeouts per nine, and slicing nearly a half-homer per nine off the average. That last piece matters in this environment: a 0.3 HR/9 in a hitter-friendly league is the mark of stuff that plays at the letters and stays off barrels.

The batted-ball shape fits the strikeout story. Opposite-field contact (41%) outpacing pull (36%) and a manageable 16.5% line-drive rate suggest hitters aren’t getting the head out consistently. Pair that with a 43.6% ground-ball clip and you get the full picture: Mayfield’s forcing defensive swings and keeping the ball in the yard. If you’re looking for the developmental hinge that separates “flash” from “future rotation piece,” it’s the walks. A 4.15 BB/9 is the one number that gives you pause, and it’s the cleanest path forward, tightening strike throwing and getting ahead more consistently. The encouraging counterweight is a tidy 3.0 K/BB; he’s still winning counts on the strength of real swing-and-miss, and the underlying profile suggests the command doesn’t need to be plus to work.
Age-to-level and run prevention put him on a fast track to broader recognition, but let’s keep the timelines honest. He’s 20 at A-ball with an ETA around 2028, and there will be regression pockets, especially in HR suppression, as he climbs and hitters punish mistakes more ruthlessly. Even so, the components you want to scale are already here: bat-missing baseline, damage control, and a contact profile that tilts away from loud pull-side punishment. That’s why I’m comfortable slotting him in the back half of a Top 150 right now with room to climb.
Fantasy Outlook
In Dynasty, this is a buy-before-the-buzz escalates. The strikeout volume plays in any format, with a particularly clean translation to Points where K’s are currency and the occasional free pass hurts less. In standard Roto, the WHIP will live and die with the walk rate, but a mid-3s FIP/xFIP foundation and elite HR suppression are green flags for ERA stability as he moves. The floor reads “late-inning stuff if starting doesn’t fully click,” but the median is a bat-missing starter if he trims the walks into the low-3s per nine over the next year. He’s still a patience play given the ETA, but in 16–20 team Dynasties or deeper minors pools, Mayfield is the kind of arm you roster now so you’re not paying a premium after the inevitable High-A breakout stretch.
