MLB Injury Report

Jose Ramirez – 3B Cleveland Guardians

Ramirez exited Saturday’s game with a hand injury, and it turns out that he is another victim of a hamate bone fracture. There’s no exact timeline for his recovery, but if it’s similar to that of other players who have suffered the same fate this season, he should be back within four to six weeks of his surgery. Regardless, this is a major blow to the Guardians and to fantasy managers who will now lose their first-round pick for the foreseeable future.

Kansas City Royals – Team Update

The Royals suffered a major injury of their own, as Vinnie Pasquantino also fractured his hamate bone. The difference here is that he had surgery to repair it yesterday, accelerating his timeline more so than the aforementioned Jose Ramirez. The same rules that were mentioned above apply here. As for Kris Bubic, he feels like a disaster right now, going through a lot. Every time he tries to intensify his progress, he suffers a setback or dead arm. Now, with him starting over by playing catch, it should be a long road back to him pitching again for the Royals.

Cole Ragans – SP Kansas City Royals

Speaking of setbacks, the Royals might be losing their best pitcher for a significant time here, based on the results of this additional testing. Ragans had progressed to two bullpen sessions but unfortunately woke up sore. As someone with an extensive injury history both far in the past and recently, there are significant red flags here to consider when rostering and waiting for health. While it’s a good thing to wait for the diagnosis, it’s also a good idea to have a backup plan here.

Oneil Cruz – OF Pittsburgh Pirates

Another fracture report from the weekend, this time for Oneil Cruz, who will miss at least one month of action. This is a different fracture than that of the previously mentioned hamate bones, but the timelines are about the same. All that being said, this one should be a bit easier for a return, simply because this is more of a structural fix, making it possible for him to return without too much of a different feeling in his hand/wrist area. Still, it’s a long stretch here for the Pirates to be without a power and speed combination hitter like Cruz. The same applies in the fantasy world.

Konnor Griffin – SS Pittsburgh Pirates

The team continues to take things slowly with their future star, as expected. It’s fair to assume he won’t be back before the All-Star Break, but there’s also a chance, given the injury to Cruz, that they accelerate the process here.

Spencer Strider – SP Atlanta Braves

The injury to Strider’s elbow is obviously more serious than we originally believed. For him to see a doctor/specialist in order to get a better handle on what’s happening can’t be a good sign. Fantasy managers should consider a backup plan fast, just in case.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – 1B Toronto Blue Jays

Guerrero injured himself on Friday, and his back continued to tighten as the game wore on. He missed both games over the weekend, though each day it was said that he felt better. For someone who has never been placed on the Injured List in his career, he still has a ways to go before that streak ends. This does feel like a true day-to-day situation here, and if I were setting weekly lineups, I would put him in mine. For what it’s worth, this incredibly smart and reliable source indicated that the first baseman was on deck to end the game and would have hit had given the chance.

Seiya Suzuki – OF Chicago Cubs

From the sounds of it, Suzuki was close enough to return, as he was able to run and test his knees out pregame yesterday. The Cubs do play today, so updates later should give you a better idea of if he will play this week. It feels like he will avoid the Injured List, given the severity of the situation here.

Corey Seager – SS Texas Rangers

The season from hell continues, as now Seager has missed time due to concussion symptoms. As such, this could result in an absence on the 7-day Concussion Injured List if these symptoms continue onward. This presents a challenge when setting lineups, because we may not know if he will be transferred over to the Injured List or not. That said, with the way he’s been playing all year, chances are in fantasy that you already have yourself a backup plan in place.

Cincinnati Reds – Team Update

Finally, some good news. First, Hunter Greene beginning a rehab assignment on Thursday is a big deal. He will likely need most, if not all, of the 30-day window here, but this is most definitely a positive development. Be sure to stash him as soon as you read this, or see if you can make a trade for him. When healthy, he’s a stud. As for Emilio Pagan, it’s a step in the right direction. How he feels afterward will determine how soon he can try it again.

Seattle Mariners – Team Update

Josh Naylor and Munoz both exited Sunday’s game early with different injuries. The good news for Naylor is that X-rays came back negative, hopefully eliminating anything serious. That said, taking a foul ball off the shin can be painful and can have repercussions that may reappear later (aka Kyle Tucker). How he feels in the coming days will be a key decider in whether he plays next week. Meanwhile, Munoz having back tightness is not ideal at all, and how he feels today might determine whether or not the Mariners decide to place him on the Injured List or not.

Cal Raleigh – C Seattle Mariners

Raleigh looks to be done with his rehab assignment after a successful night last night. If so, he’ll have finished hitting .412 with five home runs. He looked good in the highlights that saw him mash those home runs too. And that’s really what you want to see out of someone who has a history of power at the plate coming back from an oblique injury. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, he should be back tomorrow.

Hunter Brown – SP Houston Astros
