Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers for Week 13

A few new teams have emerged as targets for pitching streamers for the upcoming week. Philadelphia and Detroit have seen downturns in their offensive production. It is also clear how important Munetaka Murakami is to the White Sox offense, as they perform significantly better with him in the lineup. Once again, they have become a streaming target while he is on the injured list. Boston and San Diego also remain safe bets to stream against this week. There will be no Thursday recommendation, as about half the teams in the league have an off day, and the rest do not offer strong opportunities for streaming.

Below are some of my favorite pitching streamers for the upcoming week.

Pitching Streamers for Shallow Leagues (Over 20% Rostered)

Roki Sasaki (SP – LAD)

Next Start: Friday, 6/26 at SD

Roki Sasaki had been much maligned after pitching poorly last season. His second game this season presented similar concerns, as he gave up six earned runs against Washington. Since that start, he has allowed more than three earned runs just twice, although walks and home runs seem to be ongoing concerns. Despite those issues, fantasy managers should look Sasaki’s way in an enticing matchup against the Padres next weekend.

San Diego has scored the fewest runs in baseball, while tallying the 10th fewest home runs. They also have the league’s seventh-highest strikeout rate and own the second-highest groundball rate. For Sasaki, this cannot get much better. His HR/9 and HR/FB rates have been well above league average, so this is his chance to get those closer to normal. He should get some help avoiding the long ball, as the Padres hardly hit them, and hit a ton of grounders. Sasaki features an above average 45% GB rate and was an elite groundball pitcher in Japan. He has also significantly increased his strikeout rate from last season, ticking it up to a 9.2 K/9 rate.

One key for Sasaki this year has been morphing his sinker into a splitter and using it frequently. He also reshaped his sweeper into a slider and used it a bunch. His splitter has been devastating against lefty hitters, generating a .175 BAA, a 36% whiff rate, and a 27% putaway rate. His slider has been his main weapon against righty batters, and arguably is his best pitch overall. It features a .195 BAA, a 42% whiff rate, and a 27% putaway rate. Both of those pitches have K rates over 30%, while his fork and slider have GB rates over 50%. These changes have clearly been reasons for Sasaki’s success, and as long as he keeps up their usage, he should continue to pitch well. Take a look at the crazy drop on this splitter:

Sasaki should be added as one of the top pitching streamers wherever available.

Ryan Weathers (SP – NYY)

Next Start: Sunday, 6/28 at BOS

Much has been made about Ryan Weathers’ potential innings limitations; however, prior to his last start, he had pitched into the sixth inning in seven of his last eight outings. The only reason he was pulled prior to the sixth in his last start was that he was pummeled by the Jays offense. Neither he nor the Yankees seem to be factoring in a pitch count. Because of that start against Toronto and the one prior, his ERA ballooned to 4.36, but Weathers earned two quality starts in the four games prior to that. He also put together a 10-strikeout game during that span. He should get back on track in his next outing against Boston.

The Red Sox have been hugely disappointing this season offensively. They have not been able to create any consistent offense and lack power at most positions. They have scored the second fewest runs in the league. Accordingly, they have hit the second fewest home runs, while posting the sixth highest GB%. Weathers needs a breather from homers, as his 1.8 HR/9 rate and 18% HR/FB rate both are well above league average, and worse than his career norms. Facing Boston could give him some much-needed positive regression. He also ranks about league average at inducing grounders, a positive for him in this matchup.

Most of Weathers’ home runs allowed have been on his fastball, which he has used less than in the past. That should continue to be the case, as some of his other weapons are much more deadly to opposing batters. In particular, he should lean more on his changeup, sweeper, and slider. They all have BAAs under .200, whiff rates over 30%, and putaway rates of 24% or better. Those three pitches have also generated K rates over 30%, so he is using them at the right times to induce outs to batters on either side of the plate. His changeup should be a primary pitch against Boston, as it has a 61% GB rate. It should play well against Boston’s groundball-heavy lineup, but it can also miss bats, too:

Weathers should remain in the rotation as long as he pitches effectively, and should be on the radar for anyone looking for pitching streamers during the coming week.

Pitching Streamers for Deep Leagues (0%-24% Rostered)

JR Ritchie (SP – ATL)

Next Start: Monday, 6/22, at SD

JR Ritchie looked sharp in his last outing, shutting out the Mets’ offense, while striking out five and walking two across five innings of two-hit ball. He came on in relief in that one, after Spencer Strider exited due to injury, and now Ritchie will take his place in the rotation. This is a great matchup for Ritchie, as San Diego has been one of the worst offenses in baseball.

This game plays into some of Ritchie’s strengths. The Padres’ struggles include scoring too few runs, hitting too few homers and too many grounders, and striking out too much. Ritchie has an excellent 75% strand rate, meaning he leaves runners on the bases three-quarters of the time they reach. He also has had some poor home run luck, which could see some positive regression in this start. Ritchie has been an elite groundball pitcher this season. If he qualified, his 48% GB rate would rank 10th best in baseball. Ritchie has not been able to generate strikeouts at a high rate like he did in the minors, but could get some extra help in that department in this start.

Ritchie has an unconventional arsenal, where his most-used pitch has been his curveball, and rightly so. It is an absolutely filthy pitch. Ritchie’s curveball owns a .143 BAA, a 37% whiff rate, a 47% K rate, a 46% GB rate, and a 26% putaway rate. His curve has been a major factor in his elite GB%, as have his changeup and sinker, with 56% and 82% (WHAT?!) GB rates respectively. Ritchie has been incredibly hard to hit, with four of six pitches in his arsenal generating a BAA of .174 or better. Just imagine trying to get a hold of this:

Make Ritchie one of your priority pitching streamers for the week ahead.

Martin Perez (SP – ATL)

Next Start: Tuesday, 6/23 at SD

Martin Perez also gets to face the Padres in the upcoming slate of games. Perez owns a spectacular 2.90 ERA across 62 IP this season. He had been fluctuating between starting and relief earlier in the season, but has been used exclusively as a starter since mid-May. It has been paying off for Atlanta, winning three of his five starts during that time frame. On the season, Perez has given up three or more earned runs in just two of his appearances. Fantasy managers should not expect a quality start, though, as Atlanta has been cautious with his innings. He has just one quality start on the season, in the only game where he has completed the sixth inning. His next start could definitely put him in the win column, at least.

The Padres’ biggest weaknesses line up with some of Perez’s biggest strengths. He has been excellent at limiting homers and has stranded runners at an 80% clip. That is especially important as he has averaged three walks per nine innings. Perez has been able to strand runners and avoid homers thanks to a solid 46% GB rate, which has been his main method of inducing outs, with his K% below league average. Thankfully, the Padres strike out so much that he may pick up a few more than usual in this start.

Perez has leaned heavily on his changeup this season. It has been absolutely dominant, as batters have hit it just 11 times among the 312 times he has thrown it. That equates to a .136 BAA. It has also generated a 32% whiff rate and a 50% GB rate. This should remain a highly used pitch for Perez, especially in his matchup against the Padres. Perhaps some of those whiffs will turn into strikeouts. Here is his latest game card, showing how excellent his changeup has been:

Perez should be on any fantasy manager’s radar who is looking for pitching streamers for the coming week.

Peter Lambert (SP – HOU)

Next Start: Wednesday, 6/24 at TOR

Peter Lambert has been a pleasant surprise for both Houston and fantasy managers this season. He owns a 3.74 ERA across 57 IP, and a 5-4 record, including three wins in his last four starts. Lambert also has four quality starts this year. He lines up for another potential QS and W as he takes on a disappointing Toronto offense.

Toronto has become a streaming target for a few reasons. Of late, they have struggled to score runs, falling to the eighth-worst in baseball in runs scored. A major reason for that is that they are not hitting home runs. They have the ninth fewest in baseball this season. They also own the seventh-highest GB rate, very likely related to their other issues. Lambert has been about league average at inducing grounders this season, which will play well against the Jays. He also owns a modest 8.3 K/9 rate and a 22% K rate. Lambert has been excellent at avoiding the long ball, something he might not have to worry about in this matchup.

Three pitches that Lambert should feature heavily in this start are his sinker, changeup, and slider. They possess GB rates of 65%, 56%, and 48%, respectively, and all target the heart of Toronto’s issues. He should also feature his cutter more heavily, as it has been his best strikeout pitch. It has a 41% K rate and a 31% putaway rate. Lambert’s changeup has also been a great out pitch for him, generating a 29% K rate and a 20% putaway rate. Here is a look at both pitches to help understand why they are so successful:

Lambert can get batters out in a multitude of ways and should be scooped up as one of the top pitching streamers for the coming week.

Kumar Rocker (SP – TEX)

Next Start: Saturday, 6/27 at TOR

Kumar Rocker was knocked around by the Twins for six earned runs in his last outing. Do not let that distract you from the rest of his season. Prior to that start, he had a 3.56 ERA, but it now sits a 4.17. Still, he has been a reliable streaming option throughout the season, giving up more than three earned runs just three times, and should be in line for another solid start against the Jays over the weekend.

Rocker should benefit greatly from this matchup, as the Jays have significant home run and groundball woes. Rocker’s ERA is misleading, considering the season he has put together, and this matchup should help move it back in the right direction. He has been among the best in the league at inducing grounders. His 46% GB rate would be top-15 if he qualified. Rocker has been league average or better at avoiding home runs. If he can get the walks under control, it could take his game to the next level, and you could get in on the ground floor here. Even if he does not fix his walk issue in this start, Toronto has one of the league’s worst walk rates. This lines up to be a great streaming start for the young starter.

Rocker significantly reworked his pitch mix, completely dropping his curveball and becoming primarily a slider/sinker pitcher, and leading him to be one of the best groundballers in the league. All of his pitches except his fastball have groundball rates over 40%. Aside from the slider, sinker, and fastball, Rocker also features a cutter and changeup. His bread-and-butter, though, is his absurd slider. It owns a .178 BAA, a 35% whiff rate, a 37% K rate, and a 23% putaway rate. This is an arsenal that should lead to positive results for Rocker, especially when his slider looks like this:

Make Rocker one of your priority pitching streamers for the week ahead.
