Deep League Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Targets for Week 8

For savvy deep league fantasy baseball managers, the draft is often thought of as just the start of a season-long marathon. They know that the race to the top of the standings is often won by relentlessly working the waiver wire over the season. This serves as a timely reminder given all the major injuries that have transpired over the last week alone. These unfortunate injury setbacks can actually present opportunities to add new types of production to a lineup with smart waiver wire additions. In this week’s deep league waiver wire target article, the focus is on several injury fill-in players that are providing consistent production.

Deep League Waiver Wire Targets for Week 8

15-Team Mixed League Targets

1. Dane Myers, 1B/OF, Marlins (25% rostered)

It seems nearly every week, there’s a new Marlin player featured atop this deep league waiver wire list. Just a few weeks ago, the hot-hitting Griffin Conine was a top waiver wire target until his unfortunate injury. Now, a new standout player has emerged in his place with Dane Myers. In fact, Myers’ season batting line of .343/.383/.500 eclipses Conine’s peak stat line. Though most impressive is Myers’ production over the last seven games, as he is hitting .409 with a .591 slugging percentage. In addition to his six extra-base hits on the season so far, he’s also stolen six bases. Myers makes for an appealing waiver wire addition for the short and, potentially, long-term roster boost.

2. Zach Dezenzo, 3B/OF, Astros (19% rostered)

All too often, a prospect’s value seemingly fades when they get older than 23 years and are still in the minors. However, in many cases, the prospect is simply blocked behind top talent in the majors. This is largely been true for Astros’ top prospect, Zach Dezenzo. This season, he’s finally found consistent playing time since Kyle Tucker was traded and, more recently, Yordan Alvarez went on the IL. In his first 19 games so far this season, Dezenzo has 14 hits and 12 runs. Looking at his advanced stats, there are noticeable signs of improvement, especially with his uptick in line drive rate to over 30%, well above the 17.5% rate in his debut last season. Along with that increase, he has decreased his ground ball rate from 47.5% last season to 39.4% this season. While these improvements are based on small sample sizes, it’s encouraging to see the growth that is coming with increased playing time.

AL-Only League Waiver Wire Target

Daniel Schneeman, 2B/3B/SS/OF, Guardians (21% rostered)

One of the streakiest hitters out there is the Guardians’ super utility hitter, Daniel Schneeman. In fact, he was a hot pickup last June and then again in August. In fact, in August, he hit .294 with a .373 OBP. Though his stat lines in the other months were quite atrocious. One thing fantasy managers can bank on is that his hot streaks typically last at least a few weeks. Right now, it’s clear he is ramping up for another hot streak as he’s hit .342 over the last 15 games and a sizzling .421 over the last seven. Ride the hot hand while you can as there’s likely another week or two of Schneeman’s hot streak.

NL-Only League Waiver Wire Target

Isaac Collins, 2B/OF, Brewers (6%)

Another player who’s found their way into playing time as an injury fill-in is Isaac Collins. Initially, his time in the majors was thought to be short due to the mild nature of Sal Frelick’s injury. Though even if Frelick returns in the coming days, it looks as if Collins may have played his way into the lineup. This is partly due to his performance along with the lack of viable outfield options for the Brewers. Either way, this could mean regular playing time moving forward for Collins. He also has greater value in points league formats as he is a steady source of walks, with five in his last 18 at-bats alone.
