MLB Injury Report – More Woes for the White Sox

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, May 12, 2025. In today’s edition, George Kirby makes another rehab start with mixed results, the Dodgers have two aces headed in different directions, and Mike Trout looks to take the next step in his recovery. All of that and so much more in today’s MLB Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

George Kirby – SP Seattle Mariners

Kirby labored through this start, as his final line shows some difficulty keeping batters off the bases. Still, the biggest piece to take from this was his ability to stretch himself out, as he is currently up to 54 pitches. His fastball lived in the mid-to-late 90s, which is a good sign for the physical aspect of it. He was also able to throw his secondary pitches and do so with a crisp and nasty feel. His next start will be later this week, and while there are some murmurs that it could be his last one, the team would be wise to hold off as long as possible to ensure that he is past his past problems.

Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update

A tale of two pitchers headed in opposite directions. Tyler Glasnow has begun the initial stages of his recovery by playing catch. This will likely progress to long tosses before bullpen sessions. The good news for him is that he feels fine after his time off, though it’s important to note that he had an elbow issue last season and overall body soreness earlier this season, which remain unresolved red flags. As for Blake Snell, the cortisone shot that he received doesn’t seem to be enough, so his meeting with team doctors today will be a key factor in deciding what’s next. Prepare for the worst and be surprised by the best.

Chicago White Sox – Team Update

The belief is that both of these injuries can be healed without extensive time away. The issue here isn’t with Miguel Vargas and his calf, though he has now missed two days in a row. The issue is therefore with Luis Robert for two reasons. First, he has a long track record of injuries, and a lot of them begin with those considered to be day-to-day and then prolong into backdated trips to the Injured List. Secondly, there have been some trade inquiries for Robert’s services from the Mets, and any injury now could cause the timing of this deal to falter. This is something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Corey Seager – SS Texas Rangers

After returning on Saturday following a two-game absence, Seager missed yesterday’s game with the report that his hamstring issues had returned. What’s concerning here is that they resurfaced with swings and not running, as swinging is considered the safer of the two physical acts with regard to hamstrings. It’s also of note that he just returned from the Injured List for this same ailment, and now looks to be returning. While we can’t rush to conclusions just yet, it’s not looking great. If he does go to the Injured List, keep an eye out for who they call up, as it could be Jake Burger, who is heating up on the farm.

Houston Astros – Team Update

Today will be a big day to help decide whether or not Yordan Alvarez will be returning to the Astros when he is first eligible to do so tomorrow. Chances are that unless this absence is quite extensive, he will not need a rehab assignment before being activated. That said, for someone who has had a lingering injury such as this, he may not be ready tomorrow. Stay tuned. As for Jose Altuve, he has yet to be officially placed on the Injured List, but at age 35, the body starts to heal at a considerably slower rate than in the past. He may need these ten days to reset and get back to his old self, as he has struggled to begin the year. The good news is that he is feeling better, but time is running out to return.

Spencer Strider – SP Atlanta Braves

Strider last pitched on April 16, and that was his only outing of the year due to the internal brace procedure he received last year. As such, it feels like a mini rehab assignment would be warranted here, just to ensure that he doesn’t overdo it in the early going. The team already has their rotation lined up for the week, so the earliest it would be is a Friday return, but this is pure speculation at this point.

Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels

Trout’s feeling good is reminiscent of last year when things took a similar turn, and he progressed with added baseball activities. His running this week should be a good indication of where he’s at physically, but the team would be wise not to push him too far. He was ready to return last season within his rehab assignment before reinjuring himself and costing him the rest of the season. While each injury and situation is unique within itself, it’s something that can be learned for the future. With Trout, you have someone with an extensive injury history, and anytime he is pushed too hard, he regresses.
