The calendar has flipped to June, and we are about to embark on Week 11 of the Major League Baseball season. As always, I am here to provide some insight on matchups for MLB offenses for the coming week. Check out the chart below to see several factors for each offense. You will also see the number of games each team plays at home and away, along with a ballpark factor for both left and right-handed hitters. In addition, I list the number of games each team plays versus left and right-handed starting pitchers. I give a matchup rating for each day based on the opposing starting pitcher. Finally, I averaged the daily rankings to determine a weekly ranking for each offense. Let us see what is in store with the Week 11 Hitting Planner for fantasy baseball.
Week 11 Schedule Notes
Week 11 is a standard one from a scheduling standpoint. Eight teams have a full seven-game slate, while the other 22 play six games. Of the eight teams playing seven games, three play at home, two are on the road, and the other three play split weeks. Overall, nine teams will be at home all week, nine are on the road, and 12 have split weeks. There are no day games on Monday, with roughly half (14) of MLB teams in action. For those in leagues where you can make transactions on Mondays and Fridays, note that there is a day game on Friday. And no, it does not feature the Chicago Cubs. The Tampa Bay Rays host the Miami Marlins on Friday afternoon.
Week 11 Starting Pitching Matchup Notes
Timing is often a key factor in determining the difficulty of a starting pitching matchup. The Los Angeles Angels face Bryce Miller and George Kirby next weekend. Most agree that both Mariners starters have been above average in their young careers. But they are still rounding into form from recent injuries. Miller returned this week and gave up three runs in four innings, while Kirby has allowed 11 earned runs in two starts since coming back from the Injured List. Despite their pedigree, these are favorable matchups for the Angels at present. Things may look completely different in a few weeks. But for now, I would not shy away from starting any of your prominent Angels hitters.
Week 11 Ballpark Effects Notes
There are multiple instances this week in which a team’s outlook based on starting pitching matchups is opposed to that team’s Week 11 ballpark factors. For example, the Athletics have a seven-game home week. Early returns from Sutter Health Park have been highly favorable for hitters. Their park factor is 107 for left-handed hitters and 116 for righties. However, their first four games this week are against the top four starters of the Minnesota Twins. Considering the volume and the ballpark, I think you have to start all your Athletics hitters. But struggling hitters like Shea Langeliers and Miguel Andujar may find tough sledding, at least during the first part of the week. Things do ease up a bit over the weekend when they face the Baltimore Orioles.
On the other hand, the Seattle Mariners face challenging ballpark conditions but should gain a favorable advantage against opposing starting pitchers in Week 11. Seattle hosts the Baltimore Orioles during the first half of the week. T-Mobile Park has been the least hitter-friendly park in baseball, but the Orioles have a 5.36 staff ERA, including a 5.38 mark from their starting pitchers this year. Following that series, the Mariners travel to Los Angeles to face the Angels over the weekend. Angel Stadium has been relatively neutral for hitters over the past few seasons. However, Los Angeles has a team ERA of 4.82 this year. Seattle’s hot hitters, such as Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez, and J.P. Crawford, should continue to produce in Week 11.
Of course, the best of both worlds is when a team faces a bad pitching staff in a great hitting environment. This happens anytime a team travels to Coors Field to face the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies sport a 6.04 home ERA this year. The New York Mets get the privilege of facing the Rockies in Coors Field next weekend. All relevant Mets hitters should be locked and loaded into lineups this week. Similarly, Minnesota benefits from facing the Athletics (5.95 home ERA) for four games in Sacramento. Byron Buxton and Matt Wallner have recently returned from IL stints, so they may rest periodically. But they, alongside Carlos Correa and Trevor Larnach, should be solid Week 11 plays. Keep in mind that the Twins face three lefties, which could impact the playing time of Larnach and Wallner.
