Fantasy Baseball Prospect Report – Caissie on the Block?

The MLB trade deadline is a great time to assess our fantasy baseball rosters, just like MLB teams do with their real-life rosters. In some cases, guessing on the breakout prospect players before teams make these moves can be the key to unlocking production in fantasy lineups.

Many teams that are out of the playoffs are going to start calling up prospects to get some playing time in 2025. Disappointing teams like the Cleveland Guardians, the Atlanta Braves, and the Baltimore Orioles have some of the league’s top prospects lingering, and hopefully, their slide this season means we see some of those faces soon.

As players graduate to the Major Leagues, new names will always take their place as the season goes along, but for now, some prospects are just starting to get their first shots. All stats are as of games completed on July 27th. Today’s piece will focus on the most relevant prospect news from around the minor leagues, focusing on the biggest names in the 2025 Top 100 list and those who have recently been called up.

Now, at the trade deadline, let’s take stock of where some of the Top 100 prospects are right now.

Fantasy Baseball Prospect Report

Alex Freeland, LAD, SS

Alex Freeland will join the Los Angeles Dodgers for their games this week, as the Dodgers are in need of infield help. Freeland is the top infield prospect for Los Angeles and is ready for the big leagues at age 24. He is hitting .253/.377/.421 with 12 home runs, 71 RBI, and 17 stolen bases in AAA so far in 2025.

Kevin McGonigle, DET, SS

Kevin McGonigle has now been in AA for 11 games, and he is performing quite well. The 20-year-old is hitting .275/.383/.475 with a home run and nine RBI already. It is unlikely that McGonigle will skip AAA and go straight to the majors this season, so the 2026 season seems most likely. But if he keeps hitting like this, he will make it to AAA soon.

Robby Snelling, MIA, SP

Robby Snelling now has a couple of starts in AAA since he was bumped up a level, and his last one was by far the best. He gave up two runs in 6.2 innings and struck out 11 batters while issuing no walks. Snelling looked like a long shot to make the majors this year, but if Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera are traded, there will be rotation spots opened up for young fireballers like Snelling.

Samuel Basallo, BAL, C/1B

Since returning from his oblique injury that sidelined him for several games, Basallo is right back to smashing the baseball all over the place. Basallo is 6-for-10 with a home run, two doubles, and two RBI in his couple of games back. He now has 20 home runs in 64 AAA games and seems likely to make the Orioles squad at some point this season.

JJ Wetherholt, STL, SS

JJ Wetherholt has been in AAA for 11 games now and is absolutely killing the ball so far. He is hitting .333/.391/.762 with four home runs and five RBI. As a 22-year-old, the Cardinals might think he needs some more seasoning before making his debut in 2026, but at this rate, a late-season call-up seems possible just to see how he can handle MLB pitching.

Spencer Jones, NYY, OF

With Aaron Judge on the IL, there has been a lot of chatter about Spencer Jones being called up to the Yankees to fill the outfield spot. The Yankees have said that is not happening despite how well Jones is playing since he was brought up to AAA. Jones has a 1.407 OPS, including 13 home runs and six steals in AAA over just 94 plate appearances. At 24 years old, his time is coming soon.

Travis Bazzana, CLE, 2B

Travis Bazzana is starting to hit well again after a lengthy absence due to injury after his promotion to AA. He is now hitting .263/.364/.421 in his last seven games, including three extra base hits. His injury likely derailed a 2025 debut, and he will surely see Bazzana in a Guardians uniform in 2026 now.

Charlie Condon, COL, OF

The promotion to AA for the prized 22-year-old Rockies first baseman has not been a good experience so far for Charlie Condon. He is hitting .207/.304/.362 with two home runs and 24 strikeouts in 27 games. Over the last seven days, it’s been even worse. He is hitting .053/.100/.105 in that time.

Carson Williams, TBR, SS

I imagine the Tampa Bay Rays hoped at some point that their top shortstop prospect, Carson Williams, would force his way into a Major League spot this year. That hasn’t happened because of his poor performance in AAA so far. He is hitting just .214/.315/.433 with 129 strikeouts in 92 games. His 17 home runs show what kind of pop he has, and he also carries 19 stolen bases this year. But he needs to get the plate discipline under control before he will have a shot at the full-time gig in the big leagues.

Chase DeLauter, CLE, OF

Chase DeLauter underwent surgery on his wrist for a hamate fracture on his right hand. He is expected to be sidelined for somewhere between 6-8 weeks, which might force him out for the rest of the season. He already underwent sports hernia surgery in the spring, and thus has only had 149 plate appearances in AAA this year. DeLauter will look to start 2026 in AAA fully healthy so he can come up to the big club sometime next summer.

Owen Caissie, CHC, OF

Owen Caissie is still destroying AAA for Iowa, and he now has a .277 average with 20 home runs in 81 games. Add in 25 other extra base hits, and the 22-year-old Caissie is making a case for a big league call-up. The problem is that he is blocked at all outfield spots and at DH. What has happened recently is that Caissie has been put into some trade rumors as the Cubs are going all-in to win the World Series this year. It would certainly be hard for the club to trade one of its top prospects, but if it’s in the service of a title, Caissie seems to be available for the right price.
