Deep League Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Targets for Week 19

Baseball is really a tale of two seasons. Getting to the All-Star break in a contending spot is an important milestone, but it’s only part of the journey. One of the major hurdles to clear still is the trade deadline. This can turn everyday players into bench specialists and vice-versa. In deep leagues, there gold to be found with players who get elevated playing time as a result of trades at the deadline. In this week’s deep league waiver wire article we focus on players who should maintain or gain an expand role after the deadline.

Deep League Waiver Wire Targets for Week 19

15-Team Mixed League Targets

1. Joey Loperfido, OF, Blue Jays (21% rostered)

There’s a label of a ‘Quad-A player’ used to describe prospects that have proven too good for AAA but can’t seem to find success in the majors. Unfortunately, that label was applied to Joey Loperfido last season as he torched AAA but struggled mightily in the majors with a .214 average. However, it appears that he finally may be making the leap this season in the majors. Since being called up on July 6, he’s hitting an impressive .396 with three home runs in those 19 games. He’s also showing plate discipline by taking walks consistently, as he did in the minors. Joey Loperfido could prove a league-changer in the second half so he warrants a decent bid in FAAB leagues.

2. Warming Bernabel, OF, Rockies (15% rostered)

Despite not even being listed in the Rockies’ top 30 prospects by most publications, Warming Bernabel proved his readiness for a promotion to the majors this season. His .301 batting average at AAA left little doubt for his major league debut. Since getting the call on July 26, he has quickly made a name for himself by homering in two of his first three games while batting .389 since the call-up. Any time a power hitter player emerges in Colorado, they get extra attention on the waiver wire. Beat the rush by grabbing Bernabel early and see if he can continue his hot hitting in the majors.

AL-Only League Waiver Wire Target

Will Wagner, 1B/2B/3B, Blue Jays (15% rostered)

Sometimes, a fantasy manager just has to bet on the talent of a player. With Will Wagner, there’s not much to get excited about his stat line so far this season. No home runs, only one steal, and a .237 average. Though looking at his indicators, it’s clear he’s had a run of bad luck this season. For one, his .307 BABIP is over 50 points below his rate last season, .359, and well below his career average of .329. When Wagner is generating consistent production at the plate, the counting stats tend to come in bunches, as he mustered  RBI in just 24 games last season. Take a chance on him if you have bench space to spare.

NL-Only League Waiver Wire Target

Jack Dreyer, RP, Dodgers (17%)

One of the key skills for succeeding in AN or NL-only leagues is advance scouting of new save sources. Rarely do these players turn into everyday closers for their teams. Though if they can get occasional saves while maintaining good ratios, they have much value. Jack Dreyer of the Dodgers seems to fit that profile perfectly. He’s been a reliable contributor in the bullpen and just recently secured his first save. With Tanner Scott’s recent injury, it seems Dreyer could get more in the mix for future saves on a contending team.
