With the offseason clock officially ticking, I’m continuing my 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up Series with another arm full of intrigue, Owen Murphy of the Atlanta Braves, ranked #149 on my list. A former two-way standout turned polished right-hander, Murphy combines athleticism with advanced pitchability, flashing the kind of command and fastball life that fits perfectly in Atlanta’s development pipeline. As we count down the 142 days until Opening Day, he’s exactly the type of arm dynasty managers should be tracking before the breakout arrives.
Daily Write-Up Series #149 Owen Murphy
The Braves keep churning out arms, and quietly, Owen Murphy has reinserted himself into that conversation. After a stop-and-start early career, Murphy’s 2025 return showed flashes of the strike-throwing, bat-missing form Atlanta believed in when they drafted him. The early returns across the Complex and High-A are loud in the most sustainable ways: strikeouts without walks and a WHIP that doesn’t blink.
What jumps out first is how tidy the whole profile looks. Over 30.1 innings this season, Murphy compiled a 1.19 ERA and a microscopic 0.69 WHIP, backed by a 10.1 K/9 and just 1.78 BB/9. The swing-and-miss is real, not accidental; his 13.7% swinging-strike rate points to multiple pitches he can finish at-bats with, not just one trick. The estimators back the performance as more than smoke: a 2.29 FIP and 2.94 xFIP both come in comfortably better than league norms. The K/BB sits right where you want to see it for a young starter (6.0), and it’s the kind of strike efficiency that travels level to level.
The way he’s doing it is just as encouraging. Murphy’s fastball plays up at the top of the zone and pairs with two breakers he lands early or expands late. The delivery is clean, the sequencing advanced, and the command trending up, from a 4.5 BB/9 in 2022 to 3.21 in 2023 and 2.63 before injury in 2024. He’s missed significant time since, reportedly after Tommy John surgery, which could limit his workload early in 2026. There is some cause for hesitation with the batted-ball mix which leans fly ball (45.6%) and heavy pull contact (55.1%), but he’s muted damage (0.3 HR/9) by living above barrels and avoiding the middle. That profile plays as long as the command gains stick, and so far, all signs point up.
Context matters, too. At 21, Murphy is still squarely in the development pocket, and Atlanta historically lets the commands guys build innings before turning them loose. The 2025 season workload is modest, but the skills trend line is exactly what you want: more strikes, more whiffs, fewer free passes. The ingredients read mid-rotation with a chance to be more if the slider keeps missing bats at this clip and the changeup rounds into a consistent weapon against lefties. The ETA sits out in 2027 for now, which gives him time to stack health, innings, and refinement.
Fantasy Outlook
Dynasty players should be paying attention. Murphy checks the boxes that stabilize performance, K/BB skills, repeatable strike throwing, and estimators that agree with the surface stats. In Roto, he profiles as a ratios helper with solid strikeouts; in Points, the low walk rate makes him a clean-scoring arm if the workload ramps up. The fly-ball lean introduces some future home-run variance as he hits Double-A, so don’t pencil in ace outcomes yet, but the command foundation gives him a higher floor than most A-ball arms. In 16-team+ dynasty, he’s a proactive add; in shallower formats, put him near the top of your watch list for when Atlanta pushes him to the upper minors. The arrow is pointed up.
Five more scoreless, hitless innings tonight for @Braves no.6 prospect Owen Murphy who has yet to give up an earned run over 11.1 innings and owns a 0.26 WHIP since his return to baseball.
Curveball much more prevalent tonight as seen in the last two strikeouts. Fastball sat… pic.twitter.com/HLN3rWaM4f
