We’re 137 days away from Opening Day, and the countdown rolls on with another installment of my 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up series. Coming in at #145 is Elian Peña, a SS/3B in the New York Mets organization whose combination of contact skills and emerging power has started to turn heads in dynasty circles. Peña’s swing is compact and efficient through the zone, producing consistent hard contact to all fields, and his growing strength is beginning to translate into real in-game lift. For a teenager already showing polish at the plate and improving athleticism in the field, Peña’s trajectory points firmly upward.

Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #145 Elian Pena
When a 17-year-old starts lifting the ball with intent and walking as much as he strikes out, I’m paying attention. The Mets have quietly built a strong international pipeline, and Elian Pena just put together the kind of DSL season that jumps off the page even if you typically take complex-league lines with a grain of salt.
What sticks out right away is the blend of intent and control. Pena ran a .292/.421/.949 line with nine homers and 21 steals over 223 plate appearances, and he did it with underlying indicators that support the surface pop. A 51.1% fly-ball rate paired with a .236 ISO says “air it out and do damage,” and the 48.5% pull rate backs up the idea that he’s getting the head out and hunting impact. This isn’t empty loft either. The groundball rate stayed low at 33.1%, he peppered extra-base hits (13 doubles, one triple), and the swing decisions were advanced for the level. Thirty-six walks against 36 strikeouts with an 11.5% swinging-strike rate is the profile you want from a young bat learning to lift without losing the zone.

There’s more nuance here than “pulled fly balls go far.” Pena’s oppo clip (29.4%) shows he can let the ball travel and shoot right-center when he’s pitched away. That’s a good sign for future hit utility as he moves stateside and starts seeing better velocity and real breaking balls. He outperformed DSL league norms across the board, up roughly 50 points in average, 80 points in OBP, 240 points in OPS, with a 143.5 wRC+ that’s strong even in a hitter-friendly run environment. And while 21 bags at 17 needs context, it does hint at functional athleticism and good reads; he looks like a 55 runner now with room for the baserunning piece to stick even as the frame adds strength.
Let’s be honest about the hazards. DSL production doesn’t always travel, and Pena’s fly-ball heavy approach will get a tug of war from better spin and velocity. The pull-side power is a feature, but if the swing path gets too steepled, complex and Low-A arms will test him up and in and with soft away. That’s where the 11.5% SwStr really matters, he’s not just ambushing; he’s seeing it and taking what’s there. If the contact quality holds and the whiff rate only bumps modestly, we’re talking about a bat that could accelerate once he reaches the FCL. For me, he slots around the back of a top-150 overall prospect mix right now with a long runway and real helium potential.
Fantasy Outlook
In Dynasty, Pena is the exact kind of DSL lottery ticket I like to roster before the broader market catches up, especially in OBP and points formats where his equal BB/K and .421 OBP play up. The power/airball foundation suggests 20+ home run upside down the road, and the present speed gives him a two-category path to value while the bat matures. Temper expectations on the steals as he fills out and faces better batteries, but there’s enough athleticism to project double-digit bags at peak. Shallow leagues can keep him on a watch list, but in deeper formats (300+ prospects rostered) he’s a proactive add with an ETA in the 2031 range. The key checkpoints in 2025: keep the K% near 20–22% stateside and maintain extra-base damage (ISO north of .170). If he clears those, the helium comes fast.
