With 133 days left until opening day, the 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up series continues. Coming in at #141 is Khal Stephen, a right-hander in the Cleveland Guardians organization who remains one of the most talented arms in the minors after a dominant first full pro season.
Originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft, Stephen was acquired by Cleveland in a blockbuster trade at the 2025 deadline that sent Shane Bieber north of the border. With his workload managed wisely and his stuff trending up, he’s poised to establish himself in 2026 as one of the premier right-handed pitching prospects in baseball.

Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #141 Khal Stephen
Cleveland added to their pitching assembly line by acquiring Khal Stephen midseason in a deadline blockbuster that sent Shane Bieber to Toronto, slotting the right-hander straight into the Guardians’ vaunted strike-thrower assembly line. He dominated the lower levels before stumbling in his first taste of AA, pitching across 3 levels in 2025.
Stephen’s year was all about efficient dominance. Across 103 innings, he turned in a 2.53 ERA and 0.99 WHIP, backed by a strong 9.61 K/9 and a surgical 1.75 BB/9. The K:BB sat right at 6.0, and a 14% swinging-strike rate tells you the whiffs are real, not just a function of overeager A-ball lineups. The run estimators agree: a 2.60 FIP with only a gentle nudge from a 3.50 xFIP and a 0.44 HR/9 paints a picture of a pitcher who fills the zone with intent and still avoids the barrel. Stack that against league context, and he shaved 2.86 off the average ERA and 0.63 off the average WHIP, command carrying the day while the stuff plays up in the zone.

If you’re looking for the nit to pick, the batted-ball shape is the honest one. He ran a 47.0% fly-ball rate against a 35.9% ground-ball clip, and while the homer suppression was excellent, that profile tends to invite a bit of regression over a long haul. The gap between FIP (2.60) and xFIP (3.50) nods to that, and it’s a fair reminder that upper-minors hitters will test any elevated approach. The counter is Stephen’s knack for strike-throwing without leaking over the heart, plus command that sets up the slider to finish counts and lets the fastball play above its raw. He’s not chasing Stuff+ headlines; he’s stacking strikes, stealing early-count contact, and finishing with weapons that produce legitimate whiffs.
The developmental arc is exactly what you want to see from a Guardians riser: three levels, minimal turbulence, and skills that held firm as the competition stiffened. Cleveland’s track record with this blueprint is well established, and Stephen’s workload base, strike percentage, and bat-missing foundation all scream starter. With an ETA of 2026, he’s positioned to open the year in the upper minors and force the issue if the command/whiff blend carries over.
Fantasy Outlook
Stephen fits the mold of a sneaky-good dynasty add who ends up outperforming his pedigree. In Roto, the WHIP help could be immediate, his walk rate gives him a higher floor than most non-Top-100 arms, and even with some home-run regression baked in, the strike-throwing should keep ratios clean. The 9.6 K/9 and 14% SwStr% say he won’t be a soft-contact streamer; there’s real bat-missing juice to hang SP4 value with SP3 stretches when matchups line up. In Points, the low walks and innings efficiency play up even more. He’s a year out, so this is a stash for deeper Dynasty and a high-priority watch list in shallower formats. If the fly-ball profile tightens at Double-A/Triple-A without losing whiffs, we’re talking Cleveland’s next plug-and-play mid-rotation starter.
