Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #107 Esteban Mejia

Esteban Mejía came stateside in 2025 as one of Baltimore’s most exciting young arms, and even at just 18 he showed why evaluators are betting on his ceiling. The right-hander spent most of the season between the FCL Orioles and Low-A Delmarva, putting up performance that leaned on pure stuff more than polished command. At this stage, he isn’t a finished product, but the raw tools and projection are impossible to ignore.

Across 52 innings in 2025, Mejía posted a 2.94 ERA with 67 strikeouts and a 1.29 WHIP, holding his own while showing strikeout juice well above level average for his age. The strikeouts are the loudest indicator of his upside: even as one of the youngest arms in full-season ball, he punched his way around contact and generated whiffs with regularity. Command remains a work in progress, as you’d expect from a teenager in his first taste of stateside affiliated ball, but the ability to miss bats at a high rate bodes well for the future.

The pitch mix plays like a high-ceiling starter if he can tighten the strike-to-strike chase rates. Scouts love the fastball, which sits in the upper 90s and has been tracked up to triple-digit velocity, giving opposing hitters real heat to worry about. That heater plays atop a breaking ball that flashed strong spin and a developing changeup that can fade out of the zone when asked. That combination of velocity and movement is the kind of profile that jumps up scouting boards quickly, especially when the feel for spin and sequencing continues to mature.

Mechanically, the projection is obvious. Mejía’s 6-foot-3 frame still has fill-out left, meaning the present strength is doing most of the work now and the future strength could unlock even more dynamic stuff. He handled a jump to Low-A without obvious fear and showed flashes of real dominance, even if the surface results climbed and fell with command spikes. Pattern recognition with his release point and consistency out of a repeated slot are the key developmental levers next, but the foundation is there.

Fantasy Outlook

From a dynasty perspective, Mejía is a long-term valuation play with arms-up juice. In deeper formats, he is absolutely worth stashing as a high-ceiling prospect who can rise quickly if command catches up to stuff. Expect the 2026 season to be more about refinement than results, and treat him as a pitcher with starter or high-leverage upside rather than a finished product. His projection path leans toward backend starter or swingman with strikeout strength, but even a relief pivot doesn’t wipe out the value if the arsenal plays with the violent juice scouts see. He’s not a near-term contributor yet, but he is an intriguing bet for future rotation help heading into 2027 and beyond.
