2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up Series #75 Thayron Liranzo

We’re 44 days from Opening Day, and the 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up series closes this stretch with a high-ceiling catcher. Ranked #75 is Thayron Liranzo, a switch-hitting backstop whose power and patience give him real impact potential at the position. Liranzo remains a work in progress defensively, but the offensive upside is undeniable for fantasy purposes. Catchers with this kind of bat don’t come around often, making him an intriguing dynasty hold.

Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #75 Thayron Liranzo

Detroit’s system has quietly added some loud bats, and few generate more raw intrigue than Thayron Liranzo. At just 21 years old and already spending a full season in Double-A, Liranzo represents the type of young, power-leaning catcher prospect whose fantasy value hinges on how much swing-and-miss the bat can tolerate. The physical tools are obvious, but 2025 was very much a season of tension between patience, power, and contact quality.

Liranzo’s 2025 Double-A line tells a clear story. Across 88 games and 394 plate appearances, he hit .206/.308/.351 with 11 home runs, good for a .145 ISO and a 97 wRC+. The batting average lagged, but the on-base skill remained playable thanks to 47 walks against 125 strikeouts. That approach kept him afloat offensively despite a low average, and it matters contextually given both his age and position. Catchers this young surviving Double-A workloads are rare, even when the production is uneven.

The plate discipline profile cuts both ways. Liranzo showed a willingness to take pitches and work counts, but the swing-and-miss was substantial. His strikeout rate climbed north of 30%, and while the walk rate helped stabilize his OBP, the contact quality was inconsistent. When he did connect, the damage leaned more gap-to-gap than true over-the-fence authority, reflected in the middling slugging percentage and a batted-ball profile that did not consistently unlock his raw power.

What stands out, though, is that the foundation for offensive growth is still intact. Liranzo’s BABIP sat in a normal range, suggesting the average wasn’t propped up by luck, but also wasn’t completely cratered by it. The power output came despite an approach that is still being refined, and the fact that he reached Double-A at 21 and held his own offensively speaks to real underlying ability. Detroit challenged him aggressively, and he did not look overmatched from a pitch-recognition standpoint, even if the outcomes lagged.

Defensively, Liranzo’s future behind the plate continues to matter for fantasy purposes. Catcher eligibility dramatically alters the calculus for a bat with this kind of patience and emerging power. If he sticks there, the offensive bar is lower, and his walk rates and eventual power growth carry far more weight. If he moves off the position, the pressure on the hit tool increases substantially. For now, the Tigers are letting the bat develop at catcher, and that alone preserves his dynasty relevance.

Fantasy Outlook

Liranzo is a classic risk-reward dynasty asset, especially in leagues that value OBP. In standard 5×5 formats, the batting average drag and strikeouts cap his near-term usefulness, making him more of a stash than an active roster piece. In OBP and points leagues, the walks soften the blow, and the power profile plays better relative to the position. If he maintains catcher eligibility and the contact rate improves even marginally, he has a realistic path to becoming a top-12 fantasy catcher with mid-20s home run seasons at maturity. If the strikeouts persist or he moves off catcher, the margin for error narrows quickly. I’m buying selectively in deeper dynasty formats where patience is rewarded and positional scarcity still matters, while keeping expectations grounded until the hit tool takes a tangible step forward.
