Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #67 Carlos Lagrange

Carlos Lagrange looks the part of a power arm that the Yankees have been willing to push aggressively. At 22, he spent 2025 moving through A-ball and into Double-A, piling up strikeouts while continuing to test the boundaries of his command. The raw stuff is undeniable, led by a 70-grade fastball and multiple secondaries that flash above-average. The developmental question is not about arm strength. It is about whether the strike throwing reaches a starter’s baseline.

Across 120.0 innings in 2025, Lagrange posted a 3.53 ERA with a 12.60 K/9. The bat-missing ability translated at every stop, and the 3.14 FIP and 3.21 xFIP suggest the run prevention was supported by the underlying performance. He limited damage reasonably well and generated enough swing-and-miss to escape trouble when needed. The strikeout profile is real.

The tension point remains the walks. A 4.65 BB/9 over that 120-inning sample reinforces the command risk that evaluators have long noted. His pitch grades tell a similar story. The fastball can overpower hitters, the slider flashes as a legitimate weapon, and the curveball and changeup round out a usable mix. But with a present 20-grade command projection, the margin for error tightens as he faces more advanced hitters. The strike throwing does not need to become elite, but it does need to stabilize.

There is legitimate reliever risk here, and it is easy to see why some project a late-inning future. Two plus pitches could play up dramatically in shorter bursts. That said, the Yankees have continued to develop him as a starter, and the 120-inning workload suggests they are giving him every opportunity to prove he can handle the role. Until the organization shifts the usage, he remains a starter with volatility baked into the profile.

Fantasy Outlook

For Dynasty managers, Lagrange is a classic high-variance pitching prospect. The strikeouts will always carry value. A 12.60 K/9 in the upper minors gives him a fantasy-friendly floor even if the ratios fluctuate. If the walk rate trims into the mid-threes, he has the raw stuff to profile as a mid-rotation arm with strong strikeout totals. If it does not, the fallback is a high-leverage relief role where the fastball and slider could dominate in shorter stints. In roto leagues, that makes him a risk-reward stash. In Points formats, the walk rate
