Fantasy Baseball Pitching Streamers: Game Ober

As the season continues on, our targets for pitching streamers become clearer. The Giants and Mets have yet to stop their downward spirals. Texas has become another easy streaming target as well. It can sometimes be tricky to find quality streamers, but less so when you know what to look for.

Below are some of my favorite pitching streamers for the upcoming week.

Pitching Streamers for Shallow Leagues (Over 20% Rostered)

Michael Soroka (SP – ARI)

Next Start: Monday, 5/11 at TEX

A couple of starts ago, the Brewers lit Michael Soroka up for eight earned runs in three innings, but in his last start, Soroka bounced back with a six-inning, one-run showing against the Pirates. His next outing lines up to be another soft matchup, this time against a lowly Texas offense.

The Rangers arguably have the worst offense in baseball this season. They are bottom 10 in runs scored (third worst), home runs (sixth fewest), strikeouts (eighth most), and strikeout rate (seventh highest). All of these weaknesses play to Soroka’s strengths, which makes him a must-target streamer. He has been excellent at limiting the long ball, which should work out well in this one, against a team that struggles to hit home runs. He also has increased his strikeout rate this season to a career best 10 per nine innings.

Soroka’s improvements have come thanks to some adjustments to his pitch mix. He has thrown his fastball much less, while also adding in a cutter. Fewer fastballs means that Soroka has had to rely on his secondaries more, and his slurve, in particular, has been a key to his strikeout success. It has a 33% whiff rate and a 35% K rate, while also generating a 23% putaway rate. When you can get batters to chase like this, it is always a good sign that your stuff is for real:

Anyone thinking Soroka may not be the real deal is not watching closely enough. He is worth an add for this week, and he may be more than just one of your pitching streamers going forward, even in shallow leagues.

Bailey Ober (SP – MIN)

Next Start: Tuesday, 5/12 vs MIA

A better-than-you-think Washington Nationals team knocked around Bailey Ober in his last start. Prior to that, Ober turned in three straight quality starts, missing out on a fourth by a run. Ober faces Miami in his next turn through the rotation, which is a much better opponent for him, and one that could put him back in the win column.

Miami’s offense has been getting a bit better over the last few weeks, but still remains a worthy streaming target if the right matchup arises. The Marlins’ biggest struggles offensively continue to be hitting homers, and in turn, a high groundball rate. They have hit the fourth fewest home runs in the league, while posting the sixth highest GB%. Ober’s 36% GB rate is below league average, though it is the best of his career, and a sign that things may trend further upwards for him. He has also allowed five home runs across eight starts, but never more than one in a game. This all sets up to be a matchup that works in Ober’s favor.

Ober has been tossing his changeup more than in the past, and that has been a key to his increased GB%. His changeup has a 49% GB rate, while also generating a .180 BAA and a 22% whiff rate. Ober has developed it into a major weapon against lefty batters, and his sweeper has been devastating against righties. It owns a .125 BAA, a 44% whiff rate, a 41% K rate, and a 22% putaway rate.

Ober may not be the sexiest name available in your leagues, but for anyone looking for pitching streamers, this is a solid matchup, and he should be a pitcher you target.

Spencer Arrighetti (SP – HOU)

Next Start: Thursday, 5/14 vs SEA

Spencer Arrighetti just keeps churning out excellent performances. He has four wins in a row, with his latest being a one-run outing against Boston, where he struck out four but walked five. Arrighetti has allowed just one home run in four starts, and faces a struggling Seattle offense in his upcoming tilt.

The Mariners have the 10th fewest runs scored in the league, while also striking out a bunch – the third most in baseball. They also own the league’s fourth-highest K%. Arrighetti’s 9.7 K/9 rate would rank top-25 and tie him with Paul Skenes if he had enough innings to qualify. The biggest issue for Arrighetti this season has been walking batters, and it appears he has been lucky at keeping them from scoring, considering his 89% LOB rate. If he can limit the walks, he should dominate the Mariners in this one.

Some of Arrighetti’s stuff has been unreal this season. His curveball, sweeper, and cutter have been nearly unhittable, all possessing .167 BAAs or better. Arrighetti has flipped his curveball and fastball usage from last season, leaning on his curve more heavily, and it has been the right call. His curve features an absurd 55% whiff rate, while also generating a 51% K rate, and a 47% putaway rate. This shows he is not just able to get batters to swing and miss, but to miss at the right times, inducing outs like this one:

Arrighetti is a good bet to do well in this one, and should be in consideration as one of your top pitching streamers for the coming week.

Tatsuya Imai (SP – HOU)

Next Start: Saturday, 5/16, vs TEX

Tatsuya Imai only had one good start in his three outings before landing on the injured list. In his last start, he gave up three earned runs in a third of an inning before being pulled. Imai appears to be back to normal and faces the Texas Rangers later in the week.

The Rangers have struggled with scoring runs, hitting homers, and striking out, which should help to get Imai back on track. Imai does not have much MLB data to analyze, but in his 8.2 IP this season, he has allowed seven earned runs, yet all have come without allowing a home run. He was especially good at avoiding the long ball during his time pitching in Japan. He has also been a high groundball pitcher throughout his career, which should help him avoid homers against the Rangers if he can execute his pitches. Imai flashed some nasty strikeout stuff in his first two starts for the Astros, something that should show in this start.

Imai was primarily a fastball-slider pitcher in his first two starts in the majors, but he also features a splitter, changeup, and curveball. That splitter could be a game-changer once Imai gets settled. Just listen to this from the spring:

If Imai is available in your leagues, he should be one of the top pitching streamers you select for the coming matchup.

Jeffrey Springs (SP – ATH)

Next Start: Sunday, 5/17, vs SF

Jeffrey Springs has flashed some nice stuff this season, picking up three wins to go along with four quality starts across eight outings. His best start this season was a seven-inning trouncing of the Yankees, where he shut them out and struck out six. He has had two poor starts since, but should turn things around against San Francisco.

The Giants have scored the fewest runs in baseball. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they have hit the fewest homers and have the seventh-highest GB% in the league. Springs has a slightly inflated home run rate, thanks to a rough outing against the White Sox, so this game against the Giants should bring that HR/9 rate closer to his norm. He also could see his 35% GB rate climb in this one, too. Springs should also get some support from his offense, even though the Athletics are bottom-10 in runs scored; that is better than San Fran, and could help lead him to a win.

Springs has nearly identical pitch usage to last season, relying heavily on a mix of his fastball, slider, and changeup. His secondaries have been excellent at missing bats, with his slider and change inducing 29% and 43% whiff rates, respectively. Both have generated putaway rates, respectively. Both have generated putaway rates of 27%, and his changeup has resulted in a strikeout 32% of the time. His pitches performed well across the board in his last start, and he will look to keep that going against the Giants:

Make Springs one of your top pitching streamers for the week ahead.

Pitching Streamers for Deep Leagues (0%-24% Rostered)

Jose Quintana (SP – COL)

Next Start: Wednesday, 5/13, at PIT

Despite pitching in his age-37 season this year, Jose Quintana continues to adjust and has found a way to be productive, even pitching in Colorado. He has a win and a quality start under his belt this season already. Luckily for Quintana, he gets to avoid Coors Field in his next start against Pittsburgh.

The Pirates had been hitting pretty well, but have struggled recently. They have struck out the sixth most in the league, owning the eighth highest strikeout rate. Pittsburgh’s hitters have also generated the league’s second-highest GB%, behind only Milwaukee. Quintana has been a league-average pitcher or better for his career at inducing grounders, though this season, his GB% is a bit lower than usual. That could adjust with some help from the Pirates offense. Quintana should also get some help in the strikeout department, considering his 4.2 K/9 rate is low, even for him.

Quintana has missed bats this season, despite the low strikeout totals. Three of his five pitches have whiff rates of 20% or better. His sinker has been his best out pitch, putting batters away 26% of the time. Quintana has also shown better command as the season has gone on, walking four batters in each of his first two starts, but five in his last four starts. If he can keep locating the ball well, especially his sinker and curveball, and especially against lefty hitters, he will be able to keep up performances like this, where he can still pitch well despite lackluster stuff:

Quintana may not be who he was even a few years agao, but he is worth adding as one of the better pitching streamers for the week ahead.

Peter Lambert (SP – HOU)

Next Start: Friday, 5/15, vs TEX

Peter Lambert has made four starts this season, turning in two quality starts and two wins. Those came against the Guardians and the Dodgers, with his start against Los Angeles being his most recent outing as of writing. He shut them out, striking out four and walking four, and faces a much easier opponent in Texas in his next start.

Texas has been awful lately, finding difficulty in just about every offensive stat, which bodes well for Lambert, who has impressed this season. He has a 9.2 K/9 rate, which is the best of his career. He also has yet to allow a home run across 22 IP this season, thanks in part to a 44% GB rate and his ability to induce strikeouts. If Lambert can continue to limit runs and home runs, while also striking batters out, he should get through this start with ease.

Lambert’s fastball, changeup, and slider have been dominant this season. Each pitch has a .222 BAA or better, a 25% whiff rate or better, and a 22% K rate or better. Lambert’s cutter has also been impressive, and although it has been hit a bit more often than his other pitches, it has generated a 41% K rate, a 31% whiff rate, and a 29% putaway rate. Here he is using that cutter, along with his changeup, to earn a couple of strikeouts.

If you need a late-week add, Lambert is worth considering as one of your pitching streamers for the coming week.
