2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up Series #133 Sammy Stafura

We’re 124 days from Opening Day, and the next name in my 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up series stays within the Pirates system, but with a fresher face. Coming in at #133 is Sammy Stafura, a former Cincinnati Reds second-rounder who landed in Pittsburgh at the 2025 trade deadline. Stafura has long been known for his athleticism, twitch, and up-the-middle defensive fit, but the hit tool and contact consistency have kept evaluators split. Even so, the bat speed, strength gains, and swing decisions all trended in the right direction this past season, giving him one of the more interesting “arrow-up” profiles among Pittsburgh’s young position players.

Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #133 Sammy Stafura

It’s easy to overlook a 20-year-old who finishes with a .238 line, but the surface stats miss the full story. After coming over from Cincinnati at the deadline, Sammy Stafura jumped from Low-A into Pittsburgh’s A+ affiliate and held his own. The season reads like the early formation of a table-setter profile: patience, speed, gap impact, and a growing sense of what pitches he can actually do damage on. Once the body adds a little more strength, the foundation he showed in 2025 has a chance to play up quickly.

What jumps out immediately is the on-base skill for his age. Stafura drew 74 walks in 530 plate appearances—roughly a 14% walk rate—and kept the strikeouts to 129 (about 24%), which is more than manageable for a 20-year-old at this level. The .361 OBP and 113 wRC+ confirm he’s already beating the league on base, even if the average lags. His 13.2% swinging-strike rate speaks to some swing-and-miss baked into the profile, but the zone control looks legit, and that keeps the floor sturdier than the surface AVG suggests.

Under the hood, the batted-ball mix shows intent and a clear developmental path, but it also exposes the risk. A 49.4% pull rate paired with 44.1% fly balls is the typical lift-and-pull blueprint young hitters lean on before real strength arrives. He only cleared six fences, but the .139 ISO, 22 doubles, and 10 triples show that impact is already living in the gaps. His speed plays a big role there too, Stafura swiped 32 bags and consistently turned outfield mistakes into extra bases.

The swing decisions are trending positively, but the 13.2% swinging-strike rate and a Contact% in the low 70s make the .238 average more of a reflection of the overall shape than bad luck. A pull-heavy, fly-ball approach can suppress BABIP, and when you add below-average contact ability, the average becomes volatile until the swing tightens. That said, the low 35.2% ground-ball rate and a solid 20.7% line-drive share are encouraging markers for a hitter trying to elevate with intent. If the strength bump arrives, and given his age-to-level, that’s a reasonable expectation, some of those harmless fly balls turn into loud damage, and the overall stat line stabilizes.

Defensively, he fits cleanly on the dirt with enough athleticism and arm to stay there. That matters because his glove gives the bat time to breathe. The plate discipline foundation and the physical projection keep the path open; the question is how quickly he can trim the whiff without diluting the impact-driven shape that makes him interesting.

Fantasy Outlook

In Dynasty, Stafura profiles as a early buy for OBP and speed with long-term power growth, but with more volatility than the surface numbers show. The leadoff traits are here: walks, speed, baserunning feel. Yet the 13.2% SwStr% and average contact skills mean batting average risk is very real in the short term. The upside scenario is still enticing: 12–18 HR at maturity, 25+ SB, and a playable OBP driven by improved swing decisions. In OBP formats and Points leagues, the floor is higher thanks to his walk rate and athleticism. In standard 5×5, he projects more as a three-category contributor (Runs, SB, OBP/AVG depending on league) until the hit tool tightens enough to support more impact. The timeframe is more long game (2027–2028), but the ingredients, approach, athleticism, and developing power give him a tangible path to a valuable middle-infield profile if the contact gains come.
