We’re 119 days from Opening Day, and the next name in my 2026 Dynasty Baseball Prospects: Daily Write-Up series heads to Houston, where one of the most athletic prospects in the system forced his way onto the radar with a loud 2025 campaign. Coming in at #129 is Brice Matthews, a dynamic up-the-middle threat who paired impact, patience, and top-of-the-scale wheels across Triple-A and his first taste of the majors. Even with some predictable swing-and-miss growing pains at the MLB level, Matthews looked every bit like the kind of power-speed asset who can change a fantasy roster in a hurry.

Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #129 Brice Matthews
The Astros didn’t fast-track just anyone to Sugar Land, but when a 23-year-old stacked impact swings with premium wheels, the runway shortened in a hurry. Brice Matthews spent 2025 looking like the kind of up-the-middle athlete who could change the shape of both a lineup, and a fantasy roster, in a real way. Between Triple-A and his first taste of the big leagues, he fit Houston’s organizational mold: on-base skill, pull-side thump, and disruptive speed that forced the issue every night.
The box score sold the idea quickly. Matthews finished with a .260/.371/.830 line, a .198 ISO, and 17 home runs at Triple-A, production that graded roughly 18% better than league average by wRC+. But it was how he got there that mattered for translation to Houston. He turned himself into a selective, damage-first hitter in 2025: 70 walks against 139 strikeouts in 498 plate appearances, with a 14.6% swinging-strike rate at Triple-A. That’s real whiff, yes, but the chase-and-punish balance showed up in his OBP and in the quality of his contact. He pulled 48.2% of balls in play, carried a 21.9% line-drive rate, and held enough loft (35.1% fly balls) to let the raw power play without fully selling out. For a right-handed hitter heading into Houston, that pull-side intent is a feature, not a bug. The Crawford Boxes reward exactly this brand of lift and leverage.

Where Matthews separated was the speed pressure. He stole 41 bases at Triple-A, a confirmation of 70-grade athleticism that showed up every series. He consistently turned singles and walks into scoring position, forcing hurried throws and defensive mistakes. Defensively, the athleticism backed up a realistic multi-spot projection. While he came up as a shortstop, the speed and arm gave Houston flexibility, and that likely helped fast-track him into his first MLB action in 2025. In that brief debut, his swing showed the expected volatility against big-league spin, evidenced by a 22% swinging-strike rate, a reminder that while the tools are loud, upper-level pitchers will challenge him until he trims the miss in the zone.
The one yellow flag remained obvious: a strikeout rate that hovered in the high-20s at Triple-A, and an even spikier miss profile in the majors, leaves batting-average volatility on the table. Major-league arms will lean into that until Matthews adjusts. But the counter is still compelling: the OBP foundation is real, the lift is efficient, and the power/speed blend doesn’t require a glossy average to return fantasy value. In Houston’s development system, which has consistently maximized pull-side damage, Matthews’ ingredients still line up to produce a 20-homer, 30-plus steal threat at peak, even if the early MLB growing pains were sharper than expected.
Fantasy Outlook
In Dynasty, Matthews is the exact type of near-ready runner/power bat you want to roster before the promotion tax hits. The OBP foundation gives him a higher floor than most speedsters, and the pull-heavy contact pattern in a favorable home park nudges the ceiling into 20 HR territory, with 30-40 SB upside if Houston lets him run. In standard 5×5 Roto he profiles as a category-winner in steals who won’t sink you in power, and the OBP formats get an extra bump thanks to his walk rate. Points players should expect a useful floor from the free passes, with strikeouts trimming some value depending on your scoring. There’s batting-average risk out of the gate, but the combination of patience, plus athleticism, and a clear organizational fit makes Matthews a strong buy for 2025 impact and a potential multi-year contributor in Houston.
