Daily Baseball Write-Up Series #65 Harry Ford

Seattle had been searching for a long-term offensive pillar behind the plate, but that story shifted this offseason when Harry Ford was traded to Washington. Now 22, Ford suddenly looks like a catcher with a legitimate path to everyday playing time rather than a developmental timeline behind an entrenched veteran. The bat already looked ready. The opportunity finally caught up.

The first thing that stood out with Ford in 2025 was how advanced the approach already was. A .408 OBP and .868 OPS did not happen by accident, and the underlying plate skills supported it. He drew 74 walks against 88 strikeouts in 458 plate appearances, translating to a 16.2 percent walk rate and a 19.2 percent strikeout rate. Pair that with an 8.6 percent swinging-strike rate and you got the profile of a hitter who was on time, in the zone, and rarely expanding. His 125 wRC+ sat roughly 25 points above league average, driven by more than just patience. There was a real line-drive swing here. A 23.2 percent line-drive rate with a balanced batted-ball spray, 44.1 percent pull, 26.6 percent center, 29.3 percent oppo, told the story of a hitter who could take what was given and still punish mistakes.

The power developed at a healthy clip for a 22-year-old catcher. A .176 ISO and 16 home runs in 458 plate appearances put him on roughly a 20-homer pace over a full slate. The bat speed showed up even if the batted-ball profile was not built around chasing maximum loft. His 30.5 percent fly-ball rate paired with a 46.3 percent ground-ball rate suggested there was still more lift to unlock if he chose to pursue it, but he did not need to sell out for damage. Timing and barrel accuracy carried plenty of weight. The seven steals did not swing leagues, but for a catcher, they reinforced the athletic baseline that made the hit tool and durability projection more believable.

There were a couple of realistic governor switches. The ground-ball rate could cap the home run ceiling in the high teens if it held, and catcher workloads naturally compress counting stats. The difference now is context. In Washington, Ford projects with a far clearer runway to everyday at-bats. Even when the hits did not fall, the walks did, and he consistently beat league averages in AVG, OBP, and OPS. That type of plate discipline gives him one of the safer offensive floors at the position, and with volume unlocked, the overall fantasy ceiling rises with it.

Fantasy Outlook

The trade to Washington puts a noticeable up arrow next to Ford’s dynasty value. What once looked like a slow-burn developmental track now looks like a near-term everyday role. In OBP and Points formats, he already played like a cheat code. Bank the 16 percent walk rate, sub-20 percent strikeouts, and steady run production from a premium position. In standard 5×5 roto, he now profiles as a set-and-forget C1 with realistic 18 to 22 home run upside, strong run and RBI totals, and a helpful average, plus a handful of steals as bonus value. If the fly-ball rate ticks upward, there is legitimate top-3 catcher upside. If it does not, the OBP foundation and everyday role still keep him firmly inside the top 8 with minimal volatility. In Dynasty, this is no longer just a “build and wait” asset. This is a 22-year-old catcher with elite plate skills and a path to volume. That combination is rare, and it is worth paying for.
